Spring Practice

zippy5 - I've only seen one scrimmage or practice, but Tommy was inconsistent today. He did make a few a few plays with his arm (certainly adequate strength) and he avoided the big mistake. In fairness to the QBs, the D-Line was getting pretty consistent pressure.

Spin - Spring Game is in 2 weeks (April 19)

Bowden's concerns seem to be focused on the offensive line and defensive secondary, both areas with new coaches. Got to be a concern for the HC when you lose so many starters in these areas and then have new coaches to boot. I think our offensive ine will be OK, but a little more concerned about our defensive secondary. Still wondering who's going to line up where and what the two deep will look like on the defensive line. Answers will start to trickle in next week.

This is also my major concern this season. The defense especially.

Johnny or Keener, did you happen to notice KP16's quick slant passes? I'm hoping he will develop consistancy with this route this season.

Last year it seemed like Bickley and D'Orazio were regular targets over the middle, but neither one of them made their presence known much today. Most of the passes were on the edges to the outside recievers. I thought the slots were very under utilized with most of the short middle throws intended for tight ends.

That being said, it is hard to tell exactly what the offensive game plan was because the defense was regularly blowing up in the backfield.

One thing I did notice when KP16 ran a bootleg a couple of times he looked pretty darn fleet of foot, so hopefully that means his ankle is feeling fine.

Thanks Keener. I'm hoping for the best, but I fear the "worst." I know how I would set my defense against the Zips at the end of last season.

I see in a Beacon photo that DJ Jones is getting a look at CB? Wonder if that move is etched in stone?

The Beacon made a mistake on that one. DJ Jones played solely at RB on Saturday. I believe that is #29 Bryce Cheek defending (this was one of those deep balls that were underthrown - not by KP16).

EA discusses KP16 and the prospect of UA adding a few "blue shirts" again this summer.

"Kyle (sophomore starter Kyle Pohl) is on his game completely,'' Bowden said. "He's made great improvement. We have an offense that is very quarterback centric, so he needs to be that kind of guy.

That's all I need to hear. TB usually calls it like he sees it. KP16 looked very good when I saw him. Depth is still a concern for me though.

"We had a run for 80 yards and a touchdown today. That was huge, the first time we've had a running back this spring take one to the house. That was D.J. Jones. When I see a play like that, it's not about depth, that's a guy who wants to play."

As much as I've defended Chisholm, DJ Jones deserved to play more last year. Maybe we'll see that in 2014.

"Our eyes are open, and there are programs with guys … we're keeping our eyes open because we have to keep looking for that guy with the right opportunity,'' Bowden said. "If we don't fly him in for a visit, find a guy who is out there making it known he's looking, we can invite him as a walk-on. The first day he gets here, if he makes the team, shows up, we'll scholarship him and he will count forward.

"If you do it right, that's the blue shirt. You can't start his recruiting clock by having him in for a visit, or going to visit his school.''

Keep 'em coming!

Me too JZ. I love the decisiveness. Pohl is the man and should be treated as such unless the wheels absolutely fall off, which I don't think is going the happen. No experimentation. No fiddle farting around with other guys. It's time to start winning. He is a good player.

Concerns about depth? My only concern about depth is if we have to use it. Most MAC teams aren't very deep to begin with.

We will need the OL to improve drastically or it won't matter how improved KP is.

We need to get a couple 5th year transfers that can start.

Boyett (OT) will be here in August. He's big and has been rated highly. While I like Williams work ethic, I believe Coach Bowden would be a bit happier if Isaiah would head to the all you can eat buffet and hit the weights daily till 7/31. He needs to come in strong and well over 300lbs (315 target) to Fall camp or he will get pushed around. Blue shirts on both sides in the line and maybe in the defensive secondary would be very welcome.

My depth concerns are strictly related to QB. I sure hope KP16 can play the whole season without any significant injury, but that's a crap shoot. I'm hoping someone emerges as a clear back-up.

Went to practice today. It looked like quite a few guys were held out. I didnt see Mizell or Pittman for sure.

Kyle Pohl looks like a completely different player. His ankle must have really been bothering him. His throwing motion is so much more fluid and the ball is really jumping out of his hand. His accuracy also looks greatly improved.

The rosters were all messed up, so it was hard to tell who some of the db's were, but Kris Givens jumped right out to me making me ask who #21 was. He is by far the best corner on the team. He pretty much locked up everyone he covered. He looks big time.
