ZachTheZip Posted February 3, 2015 Author Report Posted February 3, 2015 Unless the recruit is local, I don't see a reason for a newspaper to cover recruiting. Things change too often. You do a piece on a recruit, and a few weeks later he flips to another school and then everyone involved looks dumb. 1 Quote
Captain Kangaroo Posted February 3, 2015 Report Posted February 3, 2015 Unless the recruit is local, I don't see a reason for a newspaper to cover recruiting. Things change too often. You do a piece on a recruit, and a few weeks later he flips to another school and then everyone involved looks dumb. While there is truth to the statement that player commitments come and go through signing day...it is absolutely untrue that that's an excuse for the local paper not covering Akron Zips Football Recruiting.Personally - I don't care whether the abj covers Zips recruiting. Those who participate in this forum do an excellent job of keeping everyone here up-to-date.But - the lack of coverage is yet another slice of the pie in "Reasons Why the Zips Local Following is So Weak."There as an Arizona Republic Editor years ago who stated "WE tell the people of Arizona what to think."I see it every day in this forum...many people don't believe something unless they see it in the PD or abj. Those people are dying off, but it still holds some truth. Enthusiastic coverage of the Zips would get the public excited, and sell some papers (or e-subscriptions).Michael Holley did a great job covering the Zips in his short tenure as an ABJ Zips beat writer roughly 20 years ago. Man was he enthusiastic...even if he could care less about the team. George would do himself a favor if he went into the bowels of the ABJ basement, dusted off some microfiche and saw how Holley wrote.I've already written too much. Out. Quote
skip-zip Posted February 3, 2015 Report Posted February 3, 2015 Enthusiastic coverage of the Zips would get the public excited, and sell some papers (or e-subscriptions).Unfortunately, they seem to look at their audience as it exists, and not the new readers that they could energize. I wish there was an answer, but it won't change until they get a sense that Zips Fans are a formidable local group. With all of the inserts and commemorative editions a few weeks ago, anyone reading the ABJ would have certainly thought it was a Columbus paper. In fact, I'd be willing to bet that they'd cover OSWho better than Akron, even for any similar accomplishment, simply based on their perceived interest from area readers. ZachTheZip Posted February 3, 2015 Author Report Posted February 3, 2015 The ABJ is in a really weird ownership situation. They're a significant geographical outlier for their parent company. That's a recipe for an editorial disconnect from the local population. Quote

Jrship35 Posted February 4, 2015 Report Posted February 4, 2015 On a side note ...... Take a sneak 2015 helmet peek !! https://twitter.com/zipsfbvideo/status/562777691863384066 https://twitter.com/zipsfbvideo/status/562777691863384066 Quote
Balsy Posted February 4, 2015 Report Posted February 4, 2015 I love both of them. Make the black one Navy and we're in business! Quote
Blue & Gold Posted February 4, 2015 Report Posted February 4, 2015 Is that helmet black or matte navy?I'd love to see a matte navy w/ gold "Z." Quote
skip-zip Posted February 4, 2015 Report Posted February 4, 2015 I'd love to see a matte navy w/ gold "Z."Won't happen because it makes too much sense?I'll never stop saying this......We already have a major problem with creating our Blue and Gold identity. There's plenty of cool things that can be done with those two colors. I'm done with the black. And I'm more than done with the SILVER numbers on the basketball jerseys. I just don't get any of it. Maybe the players like wearing something different, like the black, as some people suggest. But for God's sake, we are Blue and Gold. Play around all you want with the Blue and Gold. You can even do Blue, Gold, and Black together, or lighten/brighten the Blue to put Blue and Gold ON black. But Gold numbers on black just doesn't make any sense at all to me. 1 Quote
Blue & Gold Posted February 4, 2015 Report Posted February 4, 2015 Jrship35, do you have your Zips tie ready for tomorrow?! Quote
K92 Posted February 4, 2015 Report Posted February 4, 2015 I just don't get any of it. Yeah, me neither. For some reason, this showed up on a Google image search for "throwback Akron Zips football helmet" and it just really exemplified the stupidity of all these uni changes. Check out helmet mock up #1. You can't make this shit up any more absurd. Quote
zipsoutsider Posted February 4, 2015 Report Posted February 4, 2015 I love them. I love the resurgence of the Roo. Quote
Jrship35 Posted February 4, 2015 Report Posted February 4, 2015 Jrship35, do you have your Zips tie ready for tomorrow?! Well, the boy found a sweet tie in Zips Blue and Gold !!!! ...... No black !! Lol 1 Quote
Dave in Green Posted February 4, 2015 Report Posted February 4, 2015 Is it possible that school colors are no longer relevant to the younger generation? We need some input from the kids here because some of us are too old to identify with how their thinking differs from our vintage viewpoints. Quote

We need some input from the kids here because some of us are too old to identify with how their thinking differs from our vintage viewpoints. As one of the younger members here...I take pride in the Blue and Gold, but I also don't mind different options. I'm a big fan of the "Roo" logos, wasn't a fan of the Z...but it's grown on me. The more I see "new" uniforms/ideas, the more excited I get about Zips football. Seeing all the Akron logos incorporated in unique and different ways, makes me identify with it more than I did before. It has a feeling of "new" as oppossed to "same old bs". I embrace change, so long as it is accompanied by success. Quote

johnnyzip84 Posted February 4, 2015 Report Posted February 4, 2015 It's nice to see UA holding on to quite a few guys from the 2014 class via prep school or otherwise (Boxen, Junius, Williams, Wilson) - too many of these recruits in past years never made it back into the program. Quote
