Perception usually takes around a decade to change, and only then in the minds of those who first started paying attention near the beginning of the change.

You could be right.  Based on my post above about the lack of people who even know that we play D-1A, changes in perception could take a very, very long time.

Why do you perform better research for a message board post than an ABJ writer does for a feature column?

It's amazing what 5 minutes of googling during your morning coffee can accomplish. I'm certain an ABJ writer could easily gather the information that I did if that's the angle they wanted to take with a piece. The fact of the matter is they want to portray the university as being run by incompetent crooked officials as that narrative leads to more paper sales and web clicks. The fewer the facts they present, the better their argument looks.

Edit: To clarify I'm not saying the administration is without fault.

At the Signing Day press conference Bowden discussed the essentially empty InfoCision and said (paraphrased) - To-date the people haven't come, but it isn't their fault. It's the University's fault. They haven't given the people a product worth following."

The guy speaks the truth.

A product worth following will boost attendance in Akron - that is obvious by the attendance at our basketball games.  Once again Capt you have shown what a classy/diplomatic moderator you are.

Be careful there, and please clarify what you are saying.

If you're thinking that there's been any kind of significant growth over the course of the 10 years that we've been winning 21+ games per year, you need to check your numbers.

I think the general consensus here is disappointment over the fact that attendance has relatively stayed about the same (I think it's actually dropped over the last few years?).  If you're seeing something else, please let us know.

It is sarcasm.

If the basketball team went on a football-like losing streak, winning say 6 or 7 games a year and getting throttled by MAC teams, how many people do you think would be paying to come sit on our wooden bleachers? 200?

And if we were nationally-ranked and in the hunt for a good seed, people would be fighting for seats on those wooden bleachers.

Assuming that's sarcasm - here's the attendance down the stretch in 2013 when we were in that scenario.

5,403 vs UB

5,770 vs OU

3,385 vs CMU

5,247 vs BG

4,447 vs NDSU

5,189 vs. Miami

??? vs Kent (ESPN doesn't list the attendance but safe to assume sellout or near sellout)

Besides a Tuesday night vs CMU, attendance was great.

So someone mentioned that the Zips should recognize the Cavs and in particular LeBron at one of the home football games. I thought it was a pretty great idea.

Absolutely.  I wonder if they would do it.  And I also can't really speculate on how many people would show up to a football game that they don't care about, and purchase a $25 ticket just to watch LeBron wave to the crowd at a timeout, 3 months after the championship, when they've certainly had dozens of chances to see much longer versions of the same thing thoughout the summer for FREE.

I'd market it as a LBJ Foundation event. Auction/raffle off signed memorabilia with the proceeds going towards supporting the scholarships for the kids in LeBron's program.
