Game #6 Miami (OH) Redhawks

"When coach Bowden brought in the Jucos and the transfers, they came with a 'win now' attitude. Getting veterans to show us the ropes. The leadership, and showing us it could be fun. Because when coach (Rob) Ianello was here, he took the fun away. With coach Bowden, and the veteran guys, it was like a new future.

"A lot of guys on the team who were second-guessing football found the love again."

Wow. As much as Zips fans were hurting, the players were hurting even more.

While it's interesting to see in print, I thought it was common knowledge that the players, at least anyone I spoke with, had lost the love for football under Ianello. It's a big reason why Wagner decided to leave, even with a new coach arriving.

but he still quit at...Arizona was it?

Arizona Wildcats linebacker Brian Wagner, a graduate transfer from Akron who was the nation’s leading returning tackler, has left the team.

“I don’t have love for the game anymore,” Wagner told TucsonCitizen.com on Friday.

“I told Coach that, and that was it. It was something I was thinking about for a long time. That’s kind of where I’m at right now.”

Wagner was expected to be one of the top newcomers for first-year Arizona coach Rich Rodriguez, giving the Cats experience in a thin linebacker corps. Wagner worked as the first-string middle linebacker in UA’s new 3-3-5 scheme for most of spring practice.

Wagner had the heart of a warrior before Ianello took over. It's one thing to hear players grumbling about a new coach and a new system, which is not uncommon. It's another thing to add up all the post-mortem wreckage and tie it all together. It was much worse than I ever imagined.

That's really a great story. The one thing Bowden has always done so far is give credit to the guys who stuck around from the Coach I years. They do deserve a lot of credit for their efforts and for him to recognize it must have created some sort of emotional lift for those guys. Those two years must have been absolutely brutal.

Nice read EA.

Over the last three weeks the RedHawks have scored 24, 27 and 42 points as Hendrix has passed for 262, 238 and 437 yards with nine TD passes.

Looking forward to see our front seven go after Hedrix. Make him uncomfortable!!!

Hope our offense comes to play Saturday. I worry more about them. Pound and play action will beat these clowns by 30. I hope that's the game plan. Stop trying to pound the square peg AJ. This better not be close.

I can tell you that many of those guys told my son on his visit, that they were all about to either quit or were working on transferring ...... Said that the day Coach Bowden spoke with them, they felt that things had already changed and were all in !! Nothing but positive things about all the Coaches also ................. Pretty damn good sell job from the upper class men

Just hearing Ianello's name still gets me slightly depressed.

On a more positive note, I'll be in town for this game over a long weekend (Canadian Thanksgiving). Are there any season ticket holders on here who won't be using their tickets to the game? Please PM me if some are available. Thanks!

Not a trap game. Not buying it.

If Miami's offense puts up that many points, but everyone still beat them (except Umass), then that means everyone's offense rolled over Miami's defense, and so should ours. Not to mention, that our defense could (should?) fare better.

Miami's defense is giving up 33 points per game. That's better than EMU, but significantly worse than any other FBS opponent we've faced. In fact, Akron has faced three top-20 defenses in points allowed already this year (PSU #10, Marshall #12, Pitt #19). Miami allows 180 yards per game on the ground and 4.7 ypc. Establish the run, and Akron will have no difficulty putting up points.

As for defending Miami, they are not good at converting 3rd downs, their QB likes (or is often forced to) to scramble, and they aren't great in the red zone. Just from looking at their stats, it appears to me that they tend to put up points on big passing plays. Limit the shots down field, blitz the QB and keep a spy on him in case he scrambles, and you've effectively shut down their offense.

It may appear that Miami's offense is really dangerous, but in reality the first time they broke 30 points was against UMass. I see Akron winning 42-24.

Forecast is now "mostly sunny." How many extra fans is that worth? ;)

Small bump if it's mostly sunny around noon. Also, Tosu is on bye week for another small bump. Notre Dame plays at 3:30 so mostly just Protestants at Infocision and rumor has it 90% of students will be at work. It's getting cooler out so the MU fans will be busy shopping for new sweaters in Cincinnati :D

I was out of town last weekend. I read through this thread when I returned. I can't believe nobody mentioned how Miami "won." ...

It's not as clear cut as you may think. Keeping up with new NCAA rules is a full-time job. But in 2013 they introduced a new rule that doesn't allow the ball to be spiked with less than 3 seconds left on the game clock. Looking at the video, the clock was just changing from 3 to 2 seconds as the ball was snapped. There's a fair chance the officials may have ruled against a spike, so going for the pass may have been the best option under the circumstances.
