skip-zip
LOL ............. How many will jump back on the bandwagon when UA makes it to Detroit ?If you were around here in 2005, you know the answer to that question. johnnyzip84
If you were around here in 2005, you know the answer to that question. Unfortunately, there were a lot of one-time attendees in that crowd. There were certainly a lot of one-timers for the Motor City Bowl that year - perhaps 25,000 to 30,000 (total attendance 50K)? But there were FAR less Zip fans at the MAC Championship game. The total announced attendance for that game was about 12K, with perhaps 7-8 thousand (my estimate) coming from Akron. GP1
However, it will cost the University to do this. Sure, those classes are already on the books, and it doesn't cost anymore to run the class. BUT....the contestants will be current students, meaning that they would be paying for those classes if not for the free scholarship money. So, it is lost revenue, even if it's not technically "costing" them money. Does it cost money in terms of lost revenue?....Yes. It will cost them roughly $20,000 in lost revenue. In the grand scheme of things, $20K isn't much money. This article places the UofA annual budget at $364.5 million. 20,000/364,500,000 = 0.00005.Students have been asked to pay more than their fair share for the "building process". If four of them get some of it back in the form of a tuition reduction, I'm all for it. UofA attracts the kind of student in many case that would greatly benefit from this tuition reduction. I'm glad they are doing this in lieu of another stupid bobble head give away. My God, landfills around the country must be filling up with bobble head dolls faster than diapers.
Big Zip
I've already promised my daughter the day off school on December 5th if the Zips came make it to the MAC Championship game. Looking forward to the game tomorrow night even though I won't be in attendance. Hoping the team can right the ship.

Dr Z
Here's my thoughts...does that generate more money? No. Those are free admissions anyway. Maybe this convinces a few more students that an Akron football game is a worthwhile activity. Other than that, the long term benefits of such a promotion are really nonexistent. As we discussed in the former thread related to free ticket giveaways, most of those students will not come again until the next 'free tuition' giveaway. I was one of those students that went to the game when it was free. That was a great benefit when attending school and short on cash. I have continued to go years and years later now spending money on the product. I have brought more people to the games then the amount of free tickets the U provided. I assume there are a few more that share the same experience. There are plenty of long term marketing plans that aren't being utilized, at the very least, they are sticking with one of the easiest ones. The students are the target demographic in the years ahead, easy groundwork. It's been well documented that it's becoming harder and harder to get students to the game, this is just one way. It doesn't have to be the only way, just one. They have the opportunity to make some future customers tomorrow if they can provide some good entertainment. Balsy
If we make in to the MAC CG, I and about 20 of my close friends/recent Alumni are piling in cars and heading to the Motor City. Doing my part. But let's not get ahead of ourselves: With this dadgum game first!
tomzip
I made it to Detroit for the bowl, and would love to go back. I think tomorrow we will have a small crowd, weather and the last two games have and will dampen things (guess which is which ) I am hoping for turnaround for sure, if Woodsen plays, I am hoping to see what the staff sees in him. I know the medical conditions surrounding concussions can be complicated, so I won't go into the debate that rages on this board. I had predicted only wins vs. UMASS and Can't was all that was left after Ohio, but I hope I can eat some crow and get to a bowl game this year. zippy5
11 pages and the game hasn't even started. I remember a couple years ago, this place was lucky to get over a page on a game thread. Regardless how silly some of the discussion has been, I'll say it's nice to have more zips fans around.

skip-zip
I'm following the radar progressions of the rain on the weather stations this morning. It's looking like it will arrive around 7pm, be mostly light, but may have some heavier periods around 9-10pm. The really bad news is that it will be a steady rain until about midnight.Horrible timing.
ZippyRulz
meh, the NC trophy looks kind of bland...we need to prop the Wagon Wheel up against it so the country can see what a real trophy looks like
Dr Z
I'm not real concerned about our defense. Coach Amato is a seasoned veteran. He has shown multiple times this season that he can adjust to whatever the offense is doing as long as the talent level is equal...which it will be on that side of the ball. It comes down to execution on D. I have an issue with some of the sets we get in during different situations in the game on the offensive side of the ball. We need to get in the proper play for the what the defense is showing depending on who is taking the snap. Get the proper play in to give the QB the best chance to succeed on the play.BG plays the press coverage sometimes, and sometimes they don't. The Zips two QB's handle the man coverage differently. If BG shows press coverage against KP16, AJ needs to change the formation if he has a pass called. Get in a bunch formation AJ.Here is the defense that Marshall successfully played the majority of the time against us in a similar offensive set. If someone at BG is good at their job, we will see the same tonight. This was an unsuccessful play run by WMU last week on 3rd and 5.Here is an example of the defensive set last week on a 2nd and 10. WMU runs a successful play underneath the coverage here. KP16 should eat this up. But will he see it?
mes102
If we would have won one or both of the last two games, this game wouldn't be as huge as it now. But that's the past, and it has to stay that way. This is time to show up big tonight on national television. I know we started off well last year in BG, and then fell off as the game went along. With more depth, I think it favors us tonight. Pohl might be a bit shaky to start, but extra days of preparation to get back in rhythm with the receivers and running backs. I'll be there tonight. My rain gear isn't black, so i may have to buy one or make one. Zips 26 BG

Balsy
I get a feeling like this game will be similar to the Can't State game last year. Wet, cold, defensive struggle. But at the end of the day the Zips will come out on top. Thanks Dr. Z for the observations.Akron 17BGSU 10
