LZIp
BG has a legitimate 3 headed monster on offense in Johnson, Lewis, and Greene. Not to mention the back up RB and other receivers are pretty decent as well. Their defense seems to be down compared to years past, so I think the only way to beat these guys is to get into a shoutout. Last week was encouraging, but I'm not sold on our offense being that good until I see if for a few games consistently.Keener said something in the EMU thread about us not really dominating them, but taking advantage of opportunities. Well, dominating is always nice, but in my opinion, taking advantage of opportunities is the sign of a good team. Thats something I haven't seen in my now 6 years following the Zips. I think the best bet is gong to be to double Lewis. Put Scott or Givens on him and have Guiser help over top. Leave it up to our stout front 7 to slow down the run game/create enough havoc on Johnson to hopefully slow him down enough. This is going to be a tough one. I give us about a 10% chance of winning, but my opinion has more to do with BG than us. I think they are that good.
Jrship35
Ball control ...... in both losses, Memphis and Tennessee won the T.O.P. BGU runs an average of about 85 plays per game (91 yesterday) and capitalize on the tempo well. We have to control the clock and keep their offense off the field AND keep our front 7 as rested as possible. As promising as yesterday was, I just don't think we can run up and down the field with these guys. They certainly have given up their share of points in every game ..... I would agree with LZIp to a point, but am sorry to say, I think it will cost us to get in a shootout. Our offensive line HAS GOT TO play their best game ever !!! I believe we should focus on 4 yards per carry, and about 6-8 completions to the TE/Hback and slot guys in the flats, 4-6 passes in the flats to the RB's anf more intermediate over the middle passes. I also think that the longer opportunities to Lane will present themselves a few times but Milwee has got to set those opportunities up first....... I would consider using a huddle and every second of the play clock.... This game is in no way comparable to the EMU game IMOThe clock is our twelfth man this week IMO, if we can game plan with it in the offense.Tennessee put up 399 yards on the ground and 6 scores (205 in the air)..... and scored 59 totalMemphis was opposite but has a totally legit QB and ran 16 more plays (about 18% more) This would a beyond huge victory !!!

Ball control, a third down % like EMU, NO STUPID penalties to extend drives (I know it's getting old folks) and win the TO battle MIlwee can be as big on defense this week with controlled play calling (4-5 yards per play will win it).......... If they get that tempo going at home, look out
Dr Z
My question would be...CAN we be an effective offense playing ball control? Does that play to this teams offensive strengths? If we play ball control and score 17 points, can we hold BG under that?Weather for Saturday calls for 52 and mostly sunny...as of now. If we play ball control and score 17 points, can we hold BG under that? Please don't think I'm a buzz kill ................. Simply a realist and stat guyWe are 96th in the country with 68.4 plays per game ............... BGU is third in the country with 89.5 players per game (91 plays yesterday). Their offense thrives on tempo. We seem to use about 30 of the 40 seconds of the play clock on most plays, soA. I would not call that any type of "tempo" offense with 68 plays per game and certainly not shootout caliburB. What is wrong with huddling, communicating and still using those 30 seconds ? ........ Kind of is the same thing to me, but add the communication in the huddle 75 plays to 66 and 36:26 min to 23:28 T.O.P ..... Both in favor of the Zips yesterday ..............................BGU Defense - 113 total D. 65th - run and 126th - pass These guys WANT to get us in a passing war and there is no way (someone give me stats to prove) that we can keep up with that ? What passing stats and attack in any game would make anyone believe that we can ? Sorry to be a downer but 14-22 for 222 and 4 TD's is sweet for us and great improvement, but in no way are "shootout stats"I just think that if we really want this one (and I think the Staff certainly does), they have to plan a little differently for sure ........ And I think we can !!!
ZippyRulz
They are going to score some points - we need to do the same, at whatever speed we are able to do it. If they get the ball back because we score a quick-drive TD, so be it.

So be itI like our chances with the run defense, but we are a paltry 69th in pass defense I believe that would mean we need to do something a little different than a shoot out I hope the stats prove completely false. Trust me I do

zipsoutsider
Their defense is not great. I agree we have to make so e attempt to control tempo but still think it will be a high scoring game.I would think after Jerome's and Davis' big days on Saturday, they will be trying to shut them down but I am not sure they can shut them down. We have to be successful enough passing to open up the run game. This game can be won. Come on Zips, show up and do it. ?

It's possible to shut down Davis, but Lane is so dadgum big and strong that he really can't be stopped. The only thing that can stop him from dominating are his hands. Jrship35
I believe that BGU have some of the larger CB's in the MAC. Lane still should have size and strength advantage, but not like EMUDavis underneath and more to TE's and RB's
ZachTheZip
BG's defense isn't any better than EMU's. The stats are just flipped between pass and run defense.Akron's front seven needs to get to Matt Johnson and make him miserable.
Dr Z
The O/U for the game is at 68 !Link for anybody that wants to watch BG replays against Memphis, Buffalo, or UMass. BG's offense is very versatile, running all kinds of personnel sets; 12, 21, 00, 10, 22, 11... They can run the power I one play, and spread em out the next. Matt Johnson is deceptive and strong enough to make every throw. Their offense reminds me of someone else. More on that later.
skip-zip
Here's my Formula:1) Score as many points as we can, any way we can....against a weak defense.2) Force them to punt FOUR times (once per quarter). 3) Get to +2 in the Turnover margin. Zips Win !!

johnnyzip84
BG 28 Buffalo 22 That score gives me confidence that the Zips can beat BG.I don't really understand why most people aren't giving the Bulls any respect this year. They've lost 3 tough games to 3 pretty good teams. They still have Licata and Taylor on offense and the new coach certainly knows how to win football games. They're not much different, personnel wise, than the team I saw manhandle the Zips in Alumni Stadium last year.Back to the task at hand, I think skip's bullet #3 is the most important. If UA wins the TO battle by +2, I think the Zips will pull the upset.

Jrship35
Good point. If I'm not mistaken, the weather was pretty poor that game, limiting Matt Johnson to a season low 29 attempts. In the other 5 games he has played this year he is averaging 50 attempts a game. The weather forecast for Saturday looks to be clear...too bad. Could be a question on the Three For Thursday™. Yet Licata had a season high 59 attempts ................ Just sayin
zipsoutsider
I am less worried about BG and more concerned that the UA offense, defense, and special team show up. If we all show, we can win. Special Teams will playmaker role in field position and help us win if we execute well.
