Practice Refered to as "Individuals" Started

Recommended Posts

Today, Monday June 13th, was the first practice for the 2016-2017 season.

Everyone is healthy or nearly finished rehabing.

The guards look strong and quick. Travian Dunn-Martin added to the mix

comes with an excellent set of credentials. West Virginia Player of the Year;

shoots well; hustles and sporting a soccer style Mohawk.

The wings are quick. Craig Eubanks and Daniel Utomi bring size and muscle.

The bigs are to say the least BIG. Big Dog and KC you know about. Two more

bigs to watch are Aaron "Ace" Jackson and "Big Mike" Hughes. Ace looks to

be in playing form and still rehabing nicely. Big Mike is a 7/8 size Big Dog.

Big Mike has excellent moves in the paint and seems to absolutely love

the game.

The Zips are not going to sneak up on anyone this season. Any "rag" writer

that fails to pick the Zips to finish first is asleep.

Any update on Jordan Davis?

IMHO he underperformed last year (senior year in high school).

To give JD the benefit of the doubt,  McKinley was a completely guard-oriented team last year & the couple of times I saw them play he just didn't seem to fit in real well.

To be critical of JD, he often seemed disinterested out there.

Do we know if that means not on scholarship this year?  We seemed to be over or has someone left the program?

You can't be on scholarship if you don't meet the academic requirements. They are paying their own way for 2016-17.

They can effectively get the paid year back and be on scholarship for their 5th year, but only if they meet the requisite academic benchmarks after their 4th school-year.

If they didn't meet the requisite academic progress requirements after 4 years, they would not be granted a 5th year.

Not necessarily. Partial qualifiers are eligible to receive a scholarship and practice with the team. Just not eligible to participate in games.

The report in the post above was - they are not academically eligible. Based upon that, they cannot play or practice. Like Harney and Tree a few years back.

The Zips are currently at thirteen scholarships. There is one preferred walk-on.

So far as I know <insert disclaimer here> Jordan Davis needs to pass two courses

before he can apply to the university.

I spoke with Isaiah Williams today. He plans to enroll second Summer semester.

We want this level headed kid. He gets "it" about schooling. What an athlete.

Both Creighton and Gonzaga are signed contracts.

"Partial" qualifiers are not academically eligible either. To be more accurate, there hasn't been such thing as a partial qualifier for more than a decade.  The "partial" just refers to the waiver granted by the NCAA in response to the initial eligibility waiver request. The NCAA also can grant full approval to someone who is not academically eligible and they will be eligible to play right away. Or they can receive a full denial. I didn't take the comments as "not academically eligible" as a denial of a waiver of request.

Buffalo  is the two time defending MAC tournament champion with 4 starters back.  They should be the pre season pick.

Akron is also returning 4 starters and finished 3 games better than Buffalo in MAC play, including beating Buffalo twice. Upsets happen in a single elimination tournament. Does anyone really believe Middle Tennessee State was better than Michigan State? Akron showed over the course of 18 regular season MAC games who the better team was.

At the end of the season, Buffalo was the better team. Their length and athleticism at guard is a problem for the smaller Zips. And, they are one team that can match up with Big Dog. Now that Oates has a year under his belt, look out for Buffalo in 2016-17.

UB and UA are the obvious favorites to win the MAC. Neither is a wrong choice...but you won't win much money betting on them.

Two weeks into Summer training and thus far everyone is healthy.

Aaron "Ace" Jackson will still be in rehab until August.

Overall the kids are in better physical condition than at this time last year.

Mike Hughes AND Tavian Dunn-Martin both shoot the lights out.

All our guards look fit and "got it". The Zips have great depth at all positions.

Real dog fight developing at the wing position. Five qualified people for two

places on the depth chart.

Big Dog has lost weight and is getting closer to a great playing weight. Big

Mike has his back. Emmanuel Olojakpoke known as "E" learning the power

forward position. "E" can jump thru the rafters.

IMO... this year the early training is far more intense and focused than in

previous years. I hear good words from the players about the necomers

including our preferred walk-on Tyler Dalton.

No update on Isaiah Williams or Jordan Davis.
