2017 QB recruits

Nathan Rourke, JC QB, 6-2, 210

 

Recruiting him to backup & push Woody next year.  Hope we land him, or we'll only have 2 viable QB's on the roster.

 

The way he talks, it definitely sounds like the coaches are planning on moving TC5 to another position next year.

 

Being JUCO, he'd have 4 years to play 3.

Landing this guy would definitely be better than filling the roster with another TE we will never utilize, but I wonder how Kato Nelson and (perhaps more importantly) his family barking into his ear will feel about it?

Kato would have had to expect Akron would be recruiting a QB this recruiting class. If they didn't, they would be heading into next off-season with only 1 QB on the entire roster. As it stands now Rourke has 1 FBS offer so its not like this guy is some hot shot that Kato has no opportunity of beating out for 2017 back-up or 2018 starter.

It's not like Kato will be given those titles transferring elsewhere as he hasn't shown anything to this point.

I think there is a real fine art to recruiting where you strike the perfect balance between telling kids what they want to hear while refraining from words and actions that might scare current and future players away.

If Nelson is better, he'll get the QB job. If he's not, he won't. There will be 3 scholarship QB's on the roster from here-on-out. The good ones will see the field, and the others will transfer or switch positions. That's the same everywhere...

 

Nelson will get plenty of opportunities to see the field in 2017.

 

If Bowden could see into the future, I'm sure he would have pulled Nelson's redshirt and played him at mid-season. But Woodson's return was always "just around the corner," and Chapman won a couple games. By the time it was clear that Woodson's shoulder wasn't responding, and Chapman couldn't move the chains, it was too late to play Nelson.

If anything, I feel like this proves that the coaches do not want Chapman to be a QB next season. Being pushed (and potentially beaten in the short term) by another competitor can only help Kato's future success, but hurts a player like Chapman with only one season left. 

 

 

To go to the recruiting discussion, my guess would be that nobody ever said he would be the backup and eventual starter. Our coaches probably stated that we have an established starter with one year left and when he leaves it will be an open competition. Of course, a young kid will try to turn that into a better situation for himself when discussing it with other people.

I agree that's probably how the discussion went. Woodson has shown enough when healthy that I can't see his job being in jeopardy. The back-up job and 2018 starter role would have to be earned, not just given to someone.

I hope they aren't counting on a D2 transfer who completed less than 50% of his passes. My guess is he's the next Matthew Hoyer.

The majority of our players had offers from us, maybe 1 or 2 other G5 schools, and FCS offers. Nothing wrong with being respectful to the programs regardless.

I'm just hoping we sign him to give us viable depth at the QB position next year w/o having to redshirt another true freshman QB.

I wouldn't read too much into it. It's pretty common place for recruits to tweet anytime they receive an offer. If he's an upgrade over Chapman (won't be hard to be) I don't care how many FBS offers he receives.

If the kid isn't here for spring ball, I would assume that Kato is the true back-up. Kato has been learning the offense. We need a third option and I would guess this kid could be it. However, if for some reason Tommy's shoulder problems continue, we need to have someone to compete with Kato.  I wouldn't be surprised if we offered another QB who could play next season - another JUCO or 5th year senior.

Ignoring the off-the-field stuff, Manzeil's playstyle is a concern. He didn't even have a playbook at A&M. That kind of offense only works if you have a world-class "go up and get the ball" WR that can make plays without set routes.

I mean..he did win a Heisman and shatter SEC records. It wasn't all Mike Evans.
