It does seem that there will be less ephasis on transfers coming in, transfers at least that have only one year of eligibility. After listening to the press conference it is my honest opinion that the QB competition is between Kato and Johns. And I'm going to go out on a limb and say Nick Johns is the favorite to be our starter for 2017. That's not a dig on Woodson, but coach said he won't be back to practice until June, giving Johns and Kato an opportune moment to grab the position and run with it. We know what TW is and I hope he gets better soon and the Surgery goes well so he can compete for the mix. It'll be interesting to see two QBs we really haven't seen in the spring game. Good questions from someone about the TE. Coach did mention that it's a position they need to look to utilize more, especially since they added Kobie Booker. Little bit of info I did not know is that there were significant injuries at that position as well. The injury bug really hit us last year :/ I agree with your assessment of the QB situation. From what I hear Nelson is extremely athletic, so I don't believe Johns is a slam-dunk. If you are a head coach, Happy Valley is a tough place to start a RS Freshman. It might be a situation where we see one starter for OOC and Tommy is ready before we get to MAC play. It will be a real tough few months for Tommy, while he rehabs. Hopefully, he is spending that time studying film, like there is no tomorrow. Found lack of questions from the media, dumbfounding. George Thomas is going to write another article about the QB question, and that's it.

The way Bowden talks , sounds like he is not counting on Woodson at all -- he said Woodson won't even be able to throw till the end of June at the earliest -- plus he stressed at the signing broadcast and on the radio that although the QB must be able to throw well, he likes dual threats and the QB must run the ball to keep the defense honest -- a QB coming off shoulder surgery probably wouldn't run the ball much Edited February 1, 2017 by zzx

LZIp
You guys are crazy. Woody is the QB assuming he is healthy. You heard pure coach speak and Bowden was far from direct when he asked if it was an open battle or whatever. Somebody has to be QB in the spring/when summer camp begins when Woody is out. Doesn't mean they are "the guy" when all things are equal. What I found most interesting is no mention of Chapman whatsoever. Position change or done with the team?? edit: Saw a thread was created stating he is moving to WR. Edited February 2, 2017 by LZIp

Blue & Gold
Justin Sampson still has this "pinned" to the top of his twitter feed: I also saw a few pictures of him on twitter yesterday wearing a Zips hat for NLI Day, but I don't have time to search for them now. I'm comfortable believing Sampson's a Zip. Edited February 2, 2017 by Blue & Gold

Blue & Gold
GT of the Beacon Journal: East's Jemarulin Suggs headlines Zips' 13-member signing class This article's dispassionate and discombobulated and contains a few silly factual errors. Due to the information overload that is NLI Day, I'd be alright with it... if I expected a further series of articles highlighting some of the individual players who signed yesterday. But knowing the Beacon Journal, this will be the last we read of NLI Day.

Some more info on each player at go zips dot com. Some positive comments I overheard after the press conference, Warren Ball's status for next season is looking good, not a done deal, but pointing in the right direction. Brock Boxen is recovering well, and the outlook for left tackle was talked about with an excitement. There was some small talk about the scheme, coach is anticipating on staying with what worked, he believed the injuries had much more to do with the lack of success than the actual scheme. A couple photos from yesterday's event. If ZN members ever considered going to this, you should. Coach is happy to answer any question you may have.

ZipsVoice
Hey guys and gals, i don't get deep in all the high school backgrounds, was wondering if some of you that know this stuff waaay better than me can give your opinions on which of the new Zips will make the biggest impact on the team the quickest? Are any of them first year starters, or next-in-liners, or are most of them looking at getting their feet wet in 2017. Just askn'...

Are any of them first year starters, or next-in-liners, or are most of them looking at getting their feet wet in 2017. Just askn'... Great question! Alex Ramart (QB) - definite redshirt Jordan Riley (ATH) - love this guy's build & looks like he can jump out of the gym. But we're rather set at DB so he'll likely redshirt. Reggie Corner (S) - same as above. Jeffrey Lubin (CB) - again, will be a good one but will redshirt. Zaire Jacobs (DB) - ditto DeAndre Brimage (DL) - Brim needs a year in the strength program before he sees the field. But that's normal, rarely do guys play as true frosh on the DL (unless you're at Ohio State or Alabama or one of those hyper-elite programs). Eric Bentley (DL) - ditto. GoZips.com lists him @ 6-2, 244. That's why he didn't see more attention during the recruiting process. I saw Bentley play a handful of times & thought he looked bigger than that. I would have pegged him at 265-275. On the field he and Hoban's Jabari Taylor looked like twins to me. Jemarulin Suggs (RB) - Suggs is simply a great RB but I think he gets red shirted. I'm excited to see what Suggs looks like 18 months from now after spending a year in our strength program. Malik Wooldridge (WR) - needs a year to develop more; red shirt. Kobie Booker (TE) - I'm disappointed they list him at TE. I'm afraid he's going to be wasted there. He's built like the Incredible Hulk. I think he could be an absolute terror at DE. But, oh well. Red shirt for Kobie. Dusty Burkhart (WR) - Great straight-line speed. But, like Austin Wolf, no reason to rush him out there. Red shirt. Which leaves who I think has the best shot of who I think answers your question about making the biggest impact the quickest. I'm going with QB Nick Johns. He has a chance to start at Penn State next year. Edited February 2, 2017 by Blue & Gold
