Hopefully "awesome" will be reflected in a turnaround to this trend soon. https://www.uakron.edu/ir/student-enrollment

I've never subscribed to the idea that more is better. I prefer quality over quantity.

Ohio is maintaining it's population, but what is supporting it is Franklin and the surrounding counties. The real problem is it is rapidly aging. Old people typically don't go to college and don't want to spend money on education.

If the school's population increases and high quality students are enrolling, that's awesome. If the population increases and quality is reduced, that's bad and we've been down that road already. It's a losing strategy.

The low quality students make money for the University, for however long they hang on or stay interested. It's the unpaid student loans that come out of our pockets.

You are correct and I can't argue with your statement.  Doesn't make it right and I'm not saying you are saying it's OK either.

I'd rather see numbers like what is in the link above.  97% of graduates in 2021 were able to find some sort of placement after graduation. Let's start with getting kids enrolled who can do the work, graduate and contribute to the communities in which they live. Any university that has a business model of bringing in students just to collect money knowing they can never graduate is morally bankrupt. It's just obnoxious and wrong. Top universities do not behave this way.

Directing criticism towards Dr. Miller is fair because he is a high paid leader of a public institution and criticism is the price of leadership. It's important the criticism is directed at something meaningful though or it's just meaningless noise.

That enrollment spike we had a few years ago was people going to college with lots of government student loans. A lot of them will never get paid back with students quitting or getting degrees with no demand. I tore down those high voltage transformers you see on phone poles for scrap with a guy who had a Masters in Political Economics and there he was, doing that glamorous job. Bathing in PCB oil, cutting and lifting, spreading sand in the empty cans so the scrap yards would take them.

Those loans were very helpful to people like me, who filled a position that was very much in need (and doubling the money I took home to my family). But there should be a payback clause if you drop out or work toward a degree that's not needed.

I want to believe the huge enrollment drop was colleges trying to get that under control. I wouldn't bet money on that.

Praise also needs to be directed at something meaningful or it's just meaningless noise.

One of Kaulig's cars is currently in first place with under 10 laps to go in Chicago.

Edit: Bummer. He got passed with 5 left and couldn't get back on top. Still impressive and as someone who doesn't watch NASCAR the race was really exciting.

I just heard an interview on Sirius Nascar radio of the woman that heads the Nascar Foundation. They were interviewing her because she is in Akron with Matt and his race team. They are at the Children's Hospital handing out teddy bears. One of the host of the show asked her about being with Matt in Akron where he is a rock star. Owning a Nascar team, being a former Zips quarterback and all he does for the city. She said its not just Akron but all of Northeast Ohio with his philanthropy. That its unbelievable all the things Matt does and is involved with in this area.  They also talked about our marching band being there.

Lebron was the caretake and face of this area but I feel Matt has taken over that role. As far as the UofA, nobody has promoted the university more.

side note: One of the host is a NIU grad and the producer of the show is a Ball St. grad. so there is some MAC banter from time to time. They know my love for the Zips so when we play those schools, there is some fun dm's back and forth.
