2021 NCAA Tournament - v Santa Clara Nov 18th

Recommended Posts

I was wrong, too, and happy that I was. So nice to see an NCAA Tourney Committee exceed my expectations for a change. Zips and 4 other MAC teams dancing. 5 of 7, WOW!!! Every quadrant of the bracket has at least 1 team from the MAC. Never thought I'd see that.

GO ZIPS!!!   #FindAWay

Santa Clara has a gaudy record, but most of it was accomplished against bottom-100 competition:

I happened to watch part of their game against Loyola Marymount on Saturday; LMU was much better. LMU outshot Santa Clara 42-3, 11-1 on goal. Game ended 0-0. (No shoot-out, the West Coast Conf has no tournament, this was the last reg.season game.)

IMO, their poll ranking is bogus. Most poll voters do not do anything more than glance over a list of teams and their records.

Massey ratings has Akron at #30 and Santa Clara at #37. Their match-up tool gives Akron a 59% chance of winning a home game, 26% Santa Clara, 15% tie.

How many times has MAC put in 3 teams?  Never before have 4 teams gone.  We may NEVER again see 5 MAC teams in The Tournament.

As of now, 4 is the max possible next year. Lol

Somebody should tell the Beacon that it's a 48 team tourmament (not 64 ...)

I wish it were a 64 team tournament.

The first round bye is a HUGE advantage that cannot be overstated

I would even advocate cutting it back to a 32 team field, just to get rid of the 16 first round byes.

The first round bye with opponent having only three days to travel is plain ridiculous.

I humbly submit my apologies and admit I was wrong, the NCAA Committee did the right thing and put the Zips in, and not only that...they got a home match!!!  Go Zips!!!!

Feels like a near-death experience for us. How is a 11-1-4 Cali team having to travel to our place?

I noted that Santa Clara has the furthest to travel.  When I saw that Vermont had a home match, I wondered what team would be unlucky enough to have to travel there.  But it was Villanova.

And Santa Clara has to start play at what will feel like 10 PM to their players. EDIT: Wrong! As pointed out below by bigzipguy (whose brain is clearly bigger than mine), it will feel like 4 PM.

I believe there have been studies in basketball that have shown that the most important aspect of home advantage is how far the opponent has to travel.

As for why a 12-1-4 team has to travel, it's because most of those wins were against weak teams.

Still, their biggest win was over Portland, which put a 4-0 beat-down on NIU three days before losing to Santa Clara. Of course, NIU traveled to the west coast to play that game ...

tl;dr: Zips should win, but every team in the tournament has had enough success to be dangerous, including Santa Clara.

Neither is happening.

NCAA aims for around 20% of teams to make the tournament in each sport. 20% of 208 is 41.6, so 48 already exceeds the baseline number. (For comparison, in basketball, 20% of 350 is 70, and there is a 68 team tournament.)

On the other hand, NCAA rules mandate at least as many at-large teams as conference champs. There are currently 23 confereneces in DI mens soccer, so 46 is the minimum number of teams in the tournament.

Beat Santa Clara we travel to 14-4 Kentucky who has a bye.

Kentucky is not 14-4

Kentucky has only lost one game

they are 14-1...and have 4 ties....have wins over ACC powers Notre Dame and Louisville and a tie with Marshall

and let's worry...about Santa Clara right now

Santa Clara beat Portland 3-1....just a few days removed from Portland hammering MAC champ Northern Ilinois 4-0

I like the zips to take care of business at First Energy stadium...but this team needs to focus....on Santa Clara 110% right now
