There isn't big money in it like there is college football and college basketball. There are no Big East Soccer roster paying players $5+ million. There are however MAC football rosters where players are getting paid a cumulative $5M+. That's the point you're conveniently overlooking. Akron year after year is getting their best players raided by teams that have more NIL money. College soccer still functions very much as an amateur sport which is why Akron is able to compete. College football at the P4 level has evolved into professional football and at the G6 level it's at least at a semi-pro level. If Akron can't pay a QB, RB, WR, etc he's going to go to WMU, Toledo, Miami, or somewhere else that he can get paid. Players go where the money is. No different than I'm sure you'd leave your current job if a competitor offered you an extra $100k per year to do the same exact job. Edit: Reports are Miami (OH) between revenue share and NIL is fielding an $8-$10 million roster. It's professionals competing against amateurs. There is little difference between college soccer and college golf. Quote

I think it is a little more nuanced than this though. Even poor talent can and should have good discipline. This team obviously does not. Even if the budget does not change in subsequent seasons, discipline in eliminating bone head plays and penalties would go a long way to making this team competitive again, especially in the MAC. 1 Quote

I am not the coach, so that's not my problem. There are plenty of coaches in various sports who are able to do so though. Getting the most out of any team's talent is one of the most major skills of a leader in any field. Look at the coaches who have advanced, and this is evident from very early. E.g., Urban Meyer at BUGS. Those teams were clear overachievers. How did he do it? The point is, it is possible. I am not even expecting an Akron football team to be a group of overachievers. A simple transition from being underachievers to performing at least level with their talent would be dramatic. Quote

A great coach knows how to put together a good roster based on position and potential. Mount Union up the road with a much less budget has better talent than our Akron roster. The main issue is Joe Moorhead is not a Good Head Coach. Just because you were a great OC don't make you a Great Head Coach as it comes with more greater responsibility of scouting talent and putting together great coaching staff and roster and being a great leader and project manager to all. Hell Tom Arth is another prime example. Great assistant who is currently Steelers QB coach. Shitty head coach. 2 Quote

Yes, I ignored the comment because of the absurdity. How did Urban Meyer do it? Very simple, he brought in a future NFL player at QB named Josh Harris. He was only there for two years and got out while the gettin was good. Any player with JHs talent in the NIL era would be at a P4 school. Pretend you are the coach. How do you discipline them? Most are at Akron because they can't be disciplined or they simply aren't very good. Yell at them?....It goes in one ear and out the other with most guys because they know they can't be benched because of the crap behind them. Kick them off the team?.....If you kicked every moron off of this team, the waterboys would be playing. Make them do more exercise as punishment?.....Most of them can run until their legs fall off. Yeah, the top of FCS and bottom of FBS is a very very blurry line. The bottom of FBS and a two-loss D3 team...like I said, 2026 is a curious year to make the "Mount is better" argument. Quote

A team does not win with one player. Sure, recruiting helped, but well coached teams don't commonly make stupid and selfish mistakes. There is buy in to the process that is transferred from the coach to the players. That was the essence of BUGS success under Urban Meyer, not a single player. AND Urban Meyer is just a one-off example. There are many others. As to your second paragraph, punitive actions as negative reinforcement are a last resort and should be rare. Establishing a positive culture that includes a vision, values, objectives/goals, and actions that are all part of a consistent narrative is the essence. Coach Porter of our men's soccer program was masterful at these things. Most leaders that are successful are as well. We need to filter through the interview process to find that person, regardless of most of the rest of their resume. Before coming here, Coach Porter was little known and had been a very successful player but was probably not the front runner for the job based on his coaching resume alone. Quote

Mount Union is a Division III powerhouse with 13 national championships and have actually beat both Akron and Kent State before. My son plays DIII ball at a university in Ohio and after seeing them play Mount Union last month ya damn right I would bet against Akron. They put over 720 yards on us. Unlike you I actually watch all football and speak and reference based on what I know. I put Mount Union WR Mason Ashby (Canton OH) vs anyone on our offense. FYI Mason Ashby just completed a binge of 5 straight 100+ yard games. 50 catches, 740 receiving yards and 6 touchdowns in seven games. Best believe a FBS team is scooping him up after this season. Like I been saying, right now Akron is no FBS team to me until they actually beat a damn FBS team. Edited Wednesday at 08:31 PM by dre22era 2 Quote

The Toledo Blade actually published an article today where they interviewed MAC basketball coaches. People who are far more knowledgeable on the subject than any of us keyboard warriors. This was one of the questions followed by the response. How has the free-agency era changed the way you coach? “Give you an example: If somebody didn't go to class, we used to make them do all these things that were miserable. That was all part of the accountability process. Now, you do that to a player, you lose him for a week or two — I mean, mentally, they disengage — because no one has ever held them accountable, and.the season might be in the toilet. So I just don’t do that anymore. I do more counseling, with a lot less accountability, for lack of a better word.” Edited Wednesday at 08:36 PM by kreed5120 1 Quote
