I’ve been to games at Toledo and the only thing different is that they have been winning for a long time which translates into better crowds…which translates into better atmosphere….which translates into better experience. Akron has a great stadium, if they start winning it will be a fun atmosphere. Actually, that's four things they do better. The question I have is whether or not Akron can produce a great gameday experience at The Big Dialer if they win, because they've never won there. There is no actual evidence they are capable. I haven't been to a basketball game in a long time. They have a fantastic team. Does the experience match the quality of product on the floor? Akron has a great stadium, if they start winning it will be a fun atmosphere. The first home opener at InfoCision was one of the best football atmospheres I've ever been a part of. It felt like a big-time game and the crowd was electric (at least when the game was close for that first quarter lol). It was more fun than I've had at any Browns game or even when I went down to State College to watch the Zips play PSU. We have one of the nicer stadiums in D1. Football is king in Northeast Ohio. If the Zips ever become relevant again, the fans will come. Edited July 3 by akzipper

The over/under is 58.5 and I'll be tempted to take the over. I figure Tosu will get their 50 points at least (they'll want a fast start this season considering how their 2023 season ended)... the key will be for the Zips to get in the end zone at least once and make a field goal or two. Toledo market size: 518,300, the university has 15,013 enrollment. Attendance: 21,352 Akron market size: 556,000, and the university has 25,117 enrollment. Attendance: 7,237 The difference? Fanbase engagement. Student engagement. Winning helps too. Toledo eats our lunch when it comes to marketing. UA enrollement is closer to 15,000 based on 2023-24 data. Come on.... its hard enough to make a field goal against Bowling Green or Can't..... but I like your thinking! 🙂

Yes it’s minor league, but it’s baseball in Akron. They drew 3,900 fans per game to downtown Akron. That might not sound like much but they play 5 or 6 times a week. 70 home games a season X 8 minor league teams in Ohio. What do they do better? How do they engage the fans? Akron. Has. No. Clue. They can’t sell football in northeast Ohio. Some high schools draw more football fans. I went to Akron, and still lost interest in the Zips. In the right hands, it could be exciting again. Even if Akron stumbled into being good, I feel it would be challenging to get enough fans to games to make it an exciting atmosphere. A big issue is they built Infocision too big as they had delusions of grandeur. Nothing says small time like going to a game and having a whole row of bleachers to yourself. The Rubber Duck's have a lot going for them. It's very family friendly with ticket and concession prices. The ballpark is small and intimate, which creates a fun atmosphere. If you took those 4k fans at Rubber Duck's games and spread them out across Progressive Field, the game would begin to feel as sad as an Oakland A's game. That's what Akron is currently facing.
