adzip Posted March 19 Report Posted March 19 Know all the attention today, and appropriately so, is on our incredible men's basketball team and the opportunity they have on Friday, but today was another great day to be a Zip. Our 2025 Mac champion women's lacrosse team moved to a 2026 season record of 7-2 by taking down PCCC 10-6 at their field! Another Wagon Wheel point and a dominant performance by the Zips! Cant Read, Cant Write, Cant State couldn't hang with our Zips who literally played on another level. Look forward to the same on Friday. Go Zips! 7 Quote
Zips1991 Posted March 19 Report Posted March 19 Amazing progress for the program in such a short time! 1 Quote
adzip Posted March 19 Author Report Posted March 19 (edited) Yes- we fielded a team for the first time as an underfunded D1 program in 2020- so this is our sixth year. Three years ago there were 127 D1 teams and we were ranked at the very bottom. Last year, we had jumped to an 82 final season ranking! That's an increase of almost 50 spots. As of today, we are in the 80s again with 133 D1 teams (sport is having solid growth). Now- lets be realistic. We can not compete with teams at the very top- schools like North Carolina, OSU, Clemson with their full ride scholarships and lacrosse-only stadiums! But, if your hoping to play D1 womens lacrosse and get an offer from Akron- that's a positive- not only for the athlete but also for their club team. Like many sports, the club season is more important for recruiting than the high school season. And- given the lacrosse landscape- this success is giving our program and our school some much deserved national exposure! Edited March 19 by adzip typo 1 Quote

That's our only conference loss. Lacrosse is obviously much more popular in that area of the country. Edited April 20 by Zips1991 1 Quote

UMass finishes the MAC regular season 7-0 to win the regular season title. Akron is currently beating CMU and looks like we'll finish 6-1 to get the #2 seed. The tournament is only the top 4 seeds. so a rematch might be in the cards very soon. 1 Quote
Zips1991 Posted 18 hours ago Report Posted 18 hours ago (edited) MAC Tournament is at Robert Morris even though they didn't qualify. (They're in the MAC for Lacrosse.) EDIT: They actually did end up sneaking in as the 4 seed. Akron knocked CMU out with the win. Edited 18 hours ago by Zips1991 1 Quote

The official nickname for the University of Massachusetts Amherst (UMass) women’s sports teams is the Minutewomen. While the men's teams are known as the Minutemen, the university uses the gender-specific version for its women's programs. Both share Sam the Minuteman as the official mascot and wear the school colors of maroon and white. A Brief History The transition to these names didn't happen until the early 1970s. Here is a quick look at the evolution of the UMass identity: Aggies & Statesmen: In the early 20th century, the school (then Massachusetts Agricultural College) was often referred to by these names. Redmen: From 1948 until 1972, the teams were known as the Redmen. Minutemen/Minutewomen: In 1972, following concerns regarding the previous name's impact on Native American communities, the student body voted to change the nickname. The "Minutemen" was chosen for its deep historical ties to the American Revolution and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. As women's sports programs grew on campus during that same decade, they naturally adopted the title "Minutewomen." Edited 2 hours ago by ZippyRulz Quote
