ZippyforPresident
I saw this in espn's college football section and given the slowness of the board right now thought it might generate an interesting discussion on ZipsNation. ESPN - Face of the Program"Every football school has a Face of the Program, that iconic image you think of when talking football on campus. Here's your chance to help define who or what that is. Is it that fabled coach? A legendary player? A memorable play? A unique mascot? SportsNation is taking all suggestions as you help decide the Face of the Program.Join the conversation with your fellow fans below and submit your candidate."IMO one could make an argument for Jason Taylor who is arguably the most recognizable UA alum playing in the NFL. My other pick would probably be for Domenik Hixon who had one of the most memorable catches in recent Zips history with his grab in the 2005 MAC Championship and who also now possesses a Super Bowl ring. As far as the unique mascot is concerned, I don't think there's any debate about that one. Those are probably the best examples I was able to think of. What other plays, players, or coaches come to mind for the rest of you when talking Akron football?
ziptrumpet87
I think we would have to have Heisman in there somewhere.
ZachTheZip
Jason Taylor, Zippy, and John Heisman all have good arguments.I wonder if they would accept LeBron as a candidate . Probably not.

johnnyzip84
I know it's kind of sad to have to step outside of the realm of player and coaches, BUT how about the only person (in the public's eyes anyway) who has followed the program closely from Dennison to Faust to Owens to Brookhart?STEVE FRENCH - Long Time "Voice of the Zips"
UA1987
'STEVE FRENCH - Long Time "Voice of the Zips' - JZ84 quote'Perfect - Touchdowwwwnnn Akron!!!!!Jason Taylor would be a good choice. Gordon Larson (coach from 62 to 72 - also hired Dennison as an assistant), should be a candidate too... highest winning percentage (@70%). GP1
How about Dwight Lowery?I think we need to see how the upcoming season plays out without our special teams ace.
GP1
Or to rephrase the question -- If you had to get a Zips Football tatoo on your back, what would it be:Given our history, it would be a bathroom stall without a door on it and a Cambodian guy sitting on the toilet. Blue & Gold
Reading the ESPN criteria makes it a really tough choice! We've got all 3:Legendary Coach - John HeismanUnique Mascot - ZippyOutstanding Player - Jason TaylorOur program owns the most "well-rounded" tradition in the country! ZachTheZip
JASON TAYLOR named the Face of Akron's program.I was kind of hoping for Heisman to be named for the legendary name recognition we would have received, but Jason is a great choice as well and almost as universally recognized. MDZip
Especially when looking at who got selected for some of our MAC brethren (Ball St, CMU, Buffalo) who aren't exactly household names (probably even in their own households). johnnyzip84
It's a LITTLE off topic, but did anyone catch that Howard Schnellenberger is the face of TWO programs????? Yup, both Louisville (the Brohm brothers would have been better) and Florida Atlantic selected him as the "face" of their respective programs

They're offering a free tatoo, if you'll play goalkeeper for the opposition.
