  1. So, you can play Iowa State again? We bring fans to away games! I'll rent an entire lot for our tailgates again.
  2. Huh? I wasn't questioning whether you needed a new stadium. What you guys pulled off is really impressive. But what are you going to do with the new stadium? You need to do something to make the lines longer for using those great new bathrooms!
  3. Indeed, the most important thing is to build your base. But I don't think you are in a place right now where you should dismiss the "oomph" that would come with a high profile game held at the HOF with a team whose fans travel. Seems to me that you need to do what you can with what you have. In the absence of better ideas, this isn't a terrible one. And further, getting a national audience is going to be as important as home attendance as we move toward subscription TV viewing. Leveraging something unique like the HOF as the background for a game might even bring ESPN GameDay (loads of good cross-promotion for them). I know its not "the answer," but I'm not hearing many better ideas.
  4. Good point. However, what was the $65 million spent for? A stadium? Or a stadium full of fans? You guys need something that puts some oomph into your program. The current plan isn't working out so well. Our Iowa State AD was giddy over the fact that we brought nearly 30,000 fans to Vegas a few weeks ago. By some simple math, that was $30 million spent by fans of which he got nothing. Nothing except happy fans! It is why we are almost selling out our stadium for this week's game with Kansas.
  5. I think Akron should try to do something to link games with its local treasure (The Pro Football Hall of Fame), particularly as it has seats in the stadium to sell to visiting teams. Locations that have special attractiveness to visiting teams (Akron/Canton, Orlando, Las Vegas). Maybe even play the game at the Hall of Fame field. I would pay a premium for that experience. As a point of reference, UNLV had its 7th largest home attendance two weeks ago, thanks to 28,000 Iowa State fans partying in Vegas. Last year, before we recognized that we were good, we said that our most anticipated game last year was this year's game in Vegas. Granted, we are a weird fan base (insert "nothing else to do in Iowa" joke) and Vegas is Vegas. Still, there is something to be said for leveraging what you have in order to draw fans. Most of those Iowa State fans paid $121+ for tickets! UNLV and Allegient Stadium played us like a drum (even selling $33 tickets, but only a few weeks before the game, effectively destroying the after-market for extra tickets). What other college team has something more like the "Field of Dreams" than the Hall of Fame field?
  6. Isn't there a market dimension to this? Don't the blue bloods tend to pay more for their buy-games? So, the question may be, how much money are you willing to leave on the table to avoid playing someone. And is that fiscally responsible?
  7. Hoping Buffalo has some breakout performances from its receivers.
  8. I was asking if the university uses the NFL Hall of Fame as a destination/background for events (like ULM uses AT&T Stadium).
  9. AT&T Stadium? That's impressive. Does Akron do anything with the NFL Hall of Fame?
  10. Don't remind me. This will be a very different Buffalo team.
  11. This is really cool. Glad it won the Oscar.
  12. Kato made it to his senior year with Akron! Good for him. I would have lost that bet.
  13. The current plan for Iowa State is 50% capacity in the stadium. They only sold season ticket renewals. No new season tickets and no single game tickets. Lots of COVID-19 mitigation efforts will be in place, but it is still "enter at your own risk." You can sit in your ticketed location or move to areas that are more open. All I've heard about tailgating is that there will be "extra spacing" (which I take to mean leaving a space between cars). Who knows what will actually happen? P.S. It is very fun to watch the Hokeyes and the Fuskers, our B10 neighbors, getting so jealous of us in the Big 12.
  14. I hate 2020. And COVID and no college football are just the tip of the iceberg!
  15. This will be the shortest thread on the site! ?
  16. In most institutions, the academic and the housing/dining operations are handled quite separately. Housing/dining is its own profit center for institutions. Of course, there is a trickle down that affects admissions, but I think the cost of many of these things are passed on to students, often students of the next generation when it comes to capital improvement projects. This is all outside and on top of rising tuition costs.
  17. It will be fascinating to see what happens during the next round of head coach salary negotiations. Surely the trend of replacing current coaches with more expensive coaches (or giving massive raises to retain coaches) will end at least for one "silly season."
  18. I thought the same thing. The first sentence was a great place to start.
  19. Oh, I don't know. I think Buffalo's QB did pretty well last year. PFF listed him as an "hidden offensive gem" coming into this season. https://www.pff.com/news/college-football-who-are-college-footballs-hidden-offensive-gems "Vantrease holds our second-highest passing grade for returning Group of 5 quarterbacks in non-play action, straight dropbacks, at 82.7." Pretty obscure stat, but I like it.
  20. Athlon's college football preview ranks Akron's: QB unit ahead of BGSU, CMU ,NIU, and OU. WR/TE unit ahead of UB and CMU. DL unit ahead of BGSU. DB unit ahead of BGSU and NIU. And predict Akron to win 3 games. That's moving in the right direction.
  21. This is some great Memorial Day optimism! Hope you are right.
  22. Could someone provide some narrative to explain why this is good news (and/or lazy journalism)?
  23. 16% chance of Akron going to a bowl? Best news that has been posted here in a long time. Now, will someone please briefly explain how they got the 16% number?
