  1. Here are a few recruiting-related tidbits I recently stumbled across. Jacob Harrison, the 2016 QB recruit was offered early after a standout performance at the Zips summer Camp. Milwee apparently loves him, and Jacob likes the opportunity to be a passing QB in such an air-centric offense. Donterio Fowler and Jason Williams are both in Prep Schools and expected to enroll at UA next year. Matt Blaha, the 6' 4" 365 lb OL prospect recently spotted on the Zips sideline, is indeed walking-on with the Zips. Jerry Klue, the Medina/Northwestern DB...we hardly knew ye. He has already left the team. The "soft verbal" of Ronnie Hoggins is more porous than ever. Don't expect to see him in a Zips uniform. Shipman, Dixon, Dunkleberger and Jan Johnson remain solid verbals. The confirmed transfer list for the 2015 season includes: Jamal Marcus (Ohio State) TreVon Chapman (Ashland/Pitt) Larry Hope (Miami Fl) Rodney Coe (Iowa State) Donnell Alexander (Colorado State) Demarco Haynes (5' 8", 160lb WR - Northern Michigan) AJ Coney (Weber State) Travonte Junius is a 2015 grey shirt, as is K'von Wilson. Look for 6' 4" TE Josh McNeil at Tuesday night's BGSU game. This well-traveled, highly-recruited TE will be having an official visit with the Zips. Hopes are high that he'll be in the Blue and Gold next fall. BJ Bonner is another recruit high on the Zips list. Lunch time's over. Apologies up front for any typos. More updates will follow!

  2. Me too. $5,000 is a lot of money for anyone and if any of those winners have been taking out loans for college, it will go a long way to lessen their future payments. It was a meaningful giveaway. When I think of lame promotional items, I think of bobble head dolls. Truly the definition of lame and juvenile. Anyone remember this girl? She won a scholarship from Dr. Pepper by doing this. It was the difference between living in a car or going to college. What the University needs to do is get a local business to sponsor some of these scholarships. Providing a scholarship to someone brings out the best in our humanity. Bobble head dolls, etc. bring out the silliness in humanity. I like to think a University should bring out the best in humanity. Kids like bobble head dolls? Too bad. A lesson in the value of giving rather than receiving is much needed in our society. My hope is the four people who won scholarships the other night will be grateful for their prize and find some encouragement to go out and make themselves better citizens the way Padilla-Rodriguez did.

  3. So increasing attendance by thousands, and helping pay for a kids education is "lame" and "juvenile"? You will have to convince me of that. You don't have to convince me that we need some focus on the offensive side of the ball. I'll give you that one. If UA marketing had a crystal ball, they could of had black Z ponchos instead of the shirts. They could still order them and sell them (minimal charge) at the little stands by the entrances for fans that aren't bright enough to look at weather.com before they go to an outside sporting event in NEO in November.

  4. There's almost 30K students. Go take a walk down Power Street and tell me how many are there to study and get their degree ASAP. There are enough sports fans to draw to games if the product was worthwhile.

  5. Lee Adams +1. Students don't go to games because they're in college to get a degree. Those who want to be a part of the college spirit of going to every game etc...usually go to schools like State Ohio university. And this is not a bad thing. College is about, first and foremost, getting a degree, with as little debt as possible. There are a lot of students who really support UA, but aren't at the games. Why do you ask? Because they're no jocks. They have jobs so they can graduate with as little debt as possible, and they're busy doing other things at UA. This is not bad. If you were to meet me in my regular, everyday life, with the job I do, you'd probably never guess I was a die-hard football fan. But even when I (the die hard Zips fan and the die hard football fan) was in college and could go to games for free, I still missed games. I missed games for work. On the basketball side I sometimes missed games because I was so utterly exhausted after being on campus all day, and being in the lab for 3+ hours...I just wanted to get dinner and go to sleep. I'd listen on the radio or stream it online while I got ready for bed. All-in-all I think everyone needs to stop harping on the students. Try to understand them, try to see where there lives are. This is where AD's and Alumni fail. They try to impose a bias "what should be" on students they don't understand. We had the best student crowd at Infocision Stadium I've seen in a long time; and most were engaged and having fun (until we started losing). I'd like to see the tuition giveaway earlier in the season while the weather is better. More people show up for early season games as is, and more students would come out to it if it wasn't raining and cold. One game, early in the season, where we have all the right conditions, might create a special atmosphere that people want to return to. But what do I know...I'm just the recent Alum who suffered through 3-33, and have never seen anything special football wise.

  6. Hodgson has noticed a deterioration recently though, and he thinks the pitch will not get any better with NFL players playing on it next weekend. "I can't pretend that is something that makes me leap for joy," Hodgson said. "If I was asked if it was a good thing or not, I would have to say not. "I don't really think you could expect me to say 'excellent, delighted, well done'. The pitch, unfortunately, is not in the best of nick anyway, which we're all a bit unhappy with." Hodgson said ground staff will have to "work their socks off" to ensure the grass is in optimum condition by the time England kick-off against Slovenia. The 67-year-old said he hoped Club England managing director Adrian Bevington would report to the FA board, who sanctioned the NFL's partnership with Wembley, and "find a good solution" that would prevent England from playing on an uneven surface because of the NFL games in the future. Fact, not contangion. Confirms what I and others have been saying.

  7. After watching last night, Buffalo may be just what the doctor ordered! They are awful. That said, my expectations after the 4-2 start and looking forward to being favored in just about every game, I was looking at a special 9 win season. Now, it looks like my preseason pick of 6-6 may be attainable. However, after three weeks of losing, injuries, inept offense and even general infighting amongst the diehards, time to shift directions and start looking forward to Zips hoops. As I have done for years, looking forward to my usual spot at the JAR where I get to watch the best player and team in the MAC and get to listen to the best broadcast/team in the conference. Beat Buffalo!

  9. I did not arrive until 4:45, but I had a pretty nice abbreviated tailgate last night. First of all, let me say that JZ84 can whip up a mean batch of poutine. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poutine Delicious and much appreciated. Although the beer list was small compared to a Saturday game, the quality could not have been any finer. We had another home brew to try, this one from the brewery "Ol Dirty Basement". Fall Jacket was an English Brown with pumpkin pie spices that was quite tasty. Awesome job brewing your first batch, Heather. My friend Zipgrad01 hooked me up with a crowler of Willoughby's Peanut Butter Cup Coffee Porter. This is one of my favorite beers and it tasted and poured as if we had a keg of it right there in Lot 9. First crowler ever for me. For those unfamiliar: As if that wasn't enough of a treat, I also got the opportunity of a lifetime to try Westvleteren 12. Yes. The beer that has occupied the very top of many best beer lists. It lived up to the hype. I have to thank our friend Shawn for being generous enough to share some with his fellow Zip fans. This is one of the greatest things about following the Zips. The depth of friendships that we have fostered over beer, food and love of the Zips is incredible. Our small community is the most caring, sharing group of people you could ever be around and being able to look back at all the good times we've had will keep you smiling all week. Wouldn't trade my tailgating friends for anything. Thanks to all of you.
