The past few years have been reminiscent of the movie, the same thing over and over again. . . The movie starts in the fall when practice starts. Lucy attends practice and lets us know just how good this year's team is!! We've heard that before, though and we're not buying it this year! The season finally starts and the Zips are looking good on the non-conference part of the schedule: And old Charlie Brown, the Zips fan, starts to get his hopes up again. When conference season starts, some Charlies are even talking about Post season rolls around and. . .

  2. Had the Zips won this game, we would have a win to talk about for the next 20 years. Every basketball fan in Ohio would have talked about this game tomorrow. Akron recruiters would have great bragging material for the next few years when they visit midwest recruits. We played the worst OSU team in the recent history (and they probably won't be that bad again for another decade). We "supposedly" had one of our best teams ever. The stars were perfectly aligned, but we still couldn't beat them. If you want to use Forsyth as an excuse, they were similarly missing one of their big guys for illness. So we had a once in a lifetime chance to win probably the biggest game in the program history. That win would have led to a very fortunate opportunity for us to host the biggest name ever at the JAR in the Florida Gators. We still played a game where we sucked at shooting free throws (as usual), sucked at shooting three points (as we do in big games), and scored a single freaking point in 5 minutes of over time. After all that, I see zips fans who are congratulating each other for this incredible season and our 21 win streak!!! I am sorry if you enjoy mediocrity and you don't mind your team missing once in a lifetime low hanging opportunities. Some of us don't care how many coppin states and bethune cookman we beat every year. We wait the whole year for the post season and we always get the same result. So please forgive us for not exactly farting rainbows right now.

  3. No more bitching about deserving to be a bubble team ever again. Either win the MACC or win some other post-season games first. I am tired of all the MAC Conference success followed by not much. It is emotionally exhausting. Big players make big plays in big games. Big teams find a way to win when not playing their best in big games.

  4. Give me that game over a 20 point drubbing of Lipscomb every day.

  5. Anyone who hasn't suffered through seasons of Coleman Crawford and Dan Hipsher doesn't get a vote on Dambrot. I am shocked at the lack of perspective of some of the posters and their inability to fathom the fact that a change has two probable outcomes- a young coach who does well and leaves you in two years putting you back at ground zero or a mediocre one that stays too long (see Rob Senderoff).

  6. So much negativity around here. Understandably so. But the sky is not falling. I hope everyone takes a deep breath and regroups today. Am I heartbroken about this loss? Hell yes. Am I furious with the team? Sort of. They battled hard as hell last night when they had a horrible shooting night. Yes we should probably have done some things differently. There were mental mistakes. There was exhaustion. It wasn’t just one thing that lead to this loss. And the bottom line is we had a chance at the end to put the game away and weren’t able to come away with the win. I was very worried when OT began, and for good reason. Big Dog played 38 minutes last night(!). I’m not 100% sure but I’d be willing to bet that that was a season high for him. Him going 1 for 6 from the FT line in overtime was an obvious sign that he had nothing left in the tank. Keith is right, though. If he can get himself in better shape he could be unstoppable. As it is right now he is a hard man to keep contained, and has some great moves for his size. If he can shed a few pounds and work on his touch around the rim for next year, look out. He could be a monster. (on a side note, I had never noticed his calves before until they zoomed in on them during the first half last night and holy s*%$!!) Very, very similar ending as the Buffalo game… Jake turnover late, Antino mental mistake. In this one we were lucky that the Buckeyes were so terrible at finishing at the rim, but how many of those misses inside were due to Big Dog altering shots? As great of an opportunity as this was, we need to realize who we are for a second. How many of our players would start on that depleted Buckeye team? Maybe Isaiah Johnson; that’s it. Down year or not, that’s still a very athletic, long team unlike we’ve seen much of this year. How many of those games where a mid-major team downs a P5 team did the mid-major team have a poor shooting night and still win? Not many. Bottom line is that for a mid-major team to beat a P5 team, it generally takes an exceptional game. This was an opportunity where even a less than exceptional game could have resulted in a win and we just didn’t have it. They’re human, they’re going to miss shots. How else can you explain a team like the GS Warriors to lose to the Lakers? Even the pros have off shooting nights. So while I am very very disappointed in this loss, I’m not quite as bitter as the rest of you. Does that mean I’m okay with mediocrity? No, I want this program to succeed in these big games, but I’m not going to give up on them until they do. Thanks for a great season and thanks to Reggie, Jake and Pat for 4 years of service.

  8. Seriously? We just hung with a decent B1G team at their place. 4th game in 6 days, the Zips belong

  11. Look; if anything, I consider the fact that we are unhappy after a 26 win season to be a testament to the amount of progress this program has made since Keith took over. I look at the post season rundown from K92's post in the Buckeye thread and it makes me realize how valuable Keith has been. Before he got here in 04, we had been to the post season 3 times. Since then, we've played in 12 NIT or NCAA games. I don't include the CIT game because that didn't exist until recently. Ask any other MAC team to trade their last 10 seasons with ours and see if they say no. You think because OU went to the sweet 16 a couple years ago that they're content with the success of their program? You can't win any post season games unless you make them. And given the MAC as a whole, we've seen how tough it can be to get there. I have faith that KD will get us over that hump sooner rather than later.

  13. Sounds like a good idea to me. I think last night's game clearly demonstrated that KD needs to toughen this team up a bit in the OOC. We lost to an extremely youthful (only 1 Senior and 1 Junior on their roster )... ...and depleted (their top 2 leading scorers were both in street clothes )... ...7th place B1G team We're not as good as we think we are.

  16. Jake and Reggie have been great. Since they both played starters' minutes even as true freshmen, it feels like they've been here forever. They're consummate student-athletes & have been simply excellent ambassadors for UA & great leaders in the locker room. Their character, maturity, hustle & basketball IQ, not to mention outside shooting, will be missed.

  17. I think Wadszip might have been asking about this young man....on the u-20 team John Nelson (Internationals SC; Medina, OH), if you were, John Nelson is a high school junior....and he is the #1 rated high school junior. From what I have read, Nelson wants to play in Europe as soon as he is done with high school. The top 7 or 8 ranked players in the country have all been bypassing college. This year, Emmanuel Sabbi is ranked #11 or #13 (depending on ranking) and he is the 3rd highest ranked player that will be attending college.

  18. Clayton has definitely taken the torch from Shawn Barber and ran with it (bad pun and all). Even without Barber, I look forward to seeing what this team (men's and women) can do outdoor, nationally. Akron is blessed with some high quality coaches (Embrick, Dambrot and Bowden), but Dennis Mitchell quietly may be the best of them all. He built the program to national respectability even before Stiles was built. Since then, it has become a national level program in both men and women. Crazy to think that this summer, two Zips (one being Barber, who if he wasn't so good, would still be with the program) could be competing in Brazil on the sport's biggest stage, while both being college aged... And both with a legit shot to medal, obviously Barber having more than just a shot. Talking gold with him.

  19. This was the worst game I've ever experienced in my 21 years of Zips fandom. Unbelievable how bad we were. Yeah we shot poorly, but I'm talking about coaching. This was the worst game Dambrot has ever coached. You had the ball with 30 seconds left in regulation and a tie game with 2 timeouts, and you don't use one. Instead, you let a sophomore PG try to make things happen in a stagnant offense. Awful. Just awful. Our coaching staff needs to shake things up. What the Hell happened to this great ball movement "ZGen" offense? This past week, our offense looked like crap. Stagnant and slow. OSU looked a step ahead of us the entire night, and that's saying something because they blow. Thad Matta is an atrocious coach. 3 keys to future success: -Tougher OOC schedule. I'm done with the Lipscombs of the world. It's time we start scheduling like a real high mid-major. -Free Throws. -Ball movement. Our offense was fantastic and then it just went to crap. 4700 announced attendance is embarrassing. The NCAA should be ashamed of themselves. Absolutely ridiculous. Boring crowd and zero atmosphere. Akron got robbed, then shot themselves in the foot. Until next year... Go Zips.
