  1. I guess I would have to ask the question - what would make anyone think the Zips football program would have the success that YSU, or NDSU, or App State or Georgia Southern or Marshall enjoyed during their 1-AA hey days? Based upon what I've seen over the past 30 years...a pretty relevant statistical sampling period... I'll guess the Zips would have been nothing more than minor playoff contenders, with more losing records than winning ones. At the 1-AA level: YSU had Tressel, who won multiple championships. We had Dennison...who was a decent coach. YSU's losing began when Tressel left. And mysteriously kicked back in when he returned (yeah, he's not the HC, but that's irrelevant). A better, more realistic question regarding the fate of UA in general and its football program would be - what if we'd hired Tressel instead of Scarborough? Tressel seems to know what it takes to win football games. And YSU's overall prospects are also trending upward since he became President. Akron blew it every which way possible when it let Tressel walk. UA had the the cure to cancer in their back pocket, and flushed it down the toilet.

  2. FirstEnergy Stadium, home of the Cleveland Browns, will host the 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup and the United States Men’s National Team as part of a Group Stage doubleheader on July 15, as announced today by the Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) http://www.clevelandbrowns.com/news/article-5/Cleveland’s-FirstEnergy-Stadium-selected-as-host-city-for--2017-CONCACAF-Gold-Cup/11df81cf-c2b4-4e66-a4ab-0f0454e2e6c8 Hope to see some of our former Zips with USMNT in Cleveland next summer.

  3. Yeah, I never entirely understood the reasoning behind letting Tressel walk. Sure the day to day operations of running a University might not have been his strength, but we could have easily hired a right hand man to advise him on that stuff. Just having him at fundraising events would generate more dinner plates purchased or whatever else sold. It would have also gotten more local businesses invested in the University as being associated with a cult figure like Tressel is would be good PR for them. Hell it might have even gotten some of those "OSU honks" as you guys love to refer to them, to take a mild interest in the football team and adopt them as a 2nd team.

  4. UTEP has averaged 21+ wins over the last 7 seasons and only had 1 losing season in that time. Preseason polls had them finishing 6th in C-USA (for what it's worth Marshall was 4th). WKU was projected to finish 3rd and is currently 4-7 with a loss to Detroit Mercy. It's so hard to project how mid-majors teams will finish year to year. They for the most part don't have the depth of top conference schools so an injury or in the case of UTEP a starter quitting the team 3 games into the season because of a dispute with the coach can quickly derail a season.

  5. Worth watching the very end of this game (I love ESPN3) to see how YSU won. The TE caught the ball on a defenders back, and went to the ground with it on his back...on the last play of the game. Trying to decide what is worse, Pelini's clock management, or the field color

  6. Yes, Marshall did a good job of making that extra interior pass for easy baskets. It was a little frustrating to watch. I've also always been a little puzzled why our out-of-bounds plays from the baseline are always a lob to Big Dog. We did the same thing for several years with Zeke. A lot of people see this and wonder why. I was happy to see Noah scoring like that last night. I could see from the start of the season that he was looking to shoot the ball much more this year in the offensive sets. It makes me wonder how much his injury recovery last year limited his movement, which caused him to struggle to get open looks. He appears to have so much more ability to contribute points on the offensive end.

  7. The Zips did seem to get lost in a lot of switches. We lost a couple of guys for easy baskets off of in-bounds plays. It always makes me nuts to see an opponent score off of a good out of bounds play as it reminds me of the Zips lack of them. There were plenty of turnovers but I'm hoping it was a symptom of the frantic nature of the game.
