  2. My summary of the MAC season- The MAC sucks. The Zips have sucked the least.

  5. I think this will be the greatest impact. For sure. Anyone who looks at the schedule will hesitate to buy all the home games. And that's a great guaranteed source of income. But the Kent game specifically still pisses me off. Kent got an ideal spot last year and drew over 20,000 to help their averages, and make some money. We'll get almost NO additional walk-up purchases on a Tuesday night of Thanksgiving week, in addition to dissuading many season ticket renewals/new purchases because of that game alone. It's really unbelievable.

  6. I'm leaning towards you being right, K92. I don't think they really deserve the benefit of the doubt all things considered

  7. You don't have to explain anything to me. If you want to believe that some shithead that works in the Twitter department at UA really knew who Jerome Lane, Jr. was and tweeted a response to be funny, you are certainly entitled to that opinion. But there was no wink in the tweet. It was a smiley. I take that as a smug correction to Bohan. Yes, LZ. There are a great number of people who work at UA who don't know who Jerome Lane Jr. is. There are also a great number of people at UA who don't know what the NFL combine is. My guess is that the shithead that works in the Twitter department at UA doesn't know either of these things.

  11. It's a Turd muffin comment. Keener is about 90% sarcasm, 9% Bitter Old man 1% Other. But he is 100% Zips Fan. Love ya K92 I guess us young fans have that to look forward too...

  12. Here's the catch: We NEED the money. And I won't get into the whole diatribe concerning the absolute necessity to get outside money if you are a "lower level" D-1A program in this day and age. But, other than that, I agree with everything you're saying........including the fact that these weekday games, in the long term, could have some negative drawbacks as well. Here's The Key: Tight camera shots of the fans

  13. I'll add a few thoughts: I agree with B&G that sometimes it seems like KD has too much faith in his team. I suspect the motivation behind it is to foster confidence, so I'm not sure I'd want him to change that aspect of his coaching. One example this year that I might wish he could take back was his assertion that Kwan might have a future as a "specialist" in the NBA (Beacon article). It seems like things went south for Kwan right after that article was written, almost as if he felt subconsciously compelled to hone his future specialty at the expense of his overall game. Time is of the essence, but hopefully he can learn quickly from the Miami meltdown and finish strong. Regarding Olojakpoke, put me in the pleasantly surprised group with regards to his development this year. Of course he remains very raw on offense, but at the beginning of the season it seemed to me as though he wanted absolutely no part of the ball, presumably for fear of making a mistake. Besides the alley oops, he's got himself in position for a few bunnies and his free throw shooting looks much better. He looks like someone who is more than willing to work on his game, and if you combine that with his raw physical skills and his apparently limited time playing the game who is to say what kind of player he might develop into over the next 3 years. He does a few things that nobody else on the roster can.

  14. The Kent game @ home is historically the most attended game of the year. Placing it on a Tuesday on the week of thanksgiving is a death sentence to attendance. Being the week of thanks giving, most students won't be there, along with a chuck of fans. Fans, of course, will make an effort to show up if they're winning...but even I have difficulty going to Weeknight games...and I live in Akron. So it's the combination of all of these factors that will likely make the attendance at that game considerably lower than what it could be if it were earlier in the season. There was relatively good attendance at the dumpster called Dix stadium...likely because it was an October 1st, Saturday with gorgeous weather. I don't think people are writing the season off as good or bad, it's just going to be shitty inconvenient.

  15. I agree with Skip in that the ESPN contract lets ESPN do whatever they want to fill time slots and offer viewers some entertainment. All in exchange for a lot of money that the MAC isn't accustomed to. It's only when you look at the long term effects of this contract do you see that it ultimately will not help grow the conference. On the contrary, it cements the MAC as a starving, non-competitive conference that will do anything to get on TV. When viewers tune in they see bad weather, empty stadiums, no excitement and coaches who are auditioning for better jobs. The money is not worth it. Akron vs Kent Tuesday of Thanksgiving week makes me sick. If Kent can get 20,000 at their place we can get 25,000 with good weather mid season. The fact that this happened only tells me that fans, players, alumni, and rivalries don't really matter. Money does and only ESPN wins.

  18. I think this is a testament to how high expectations have risen for Akron Basketball during the Dambrot era.....the fact that a 301-137 record is being called "respectable". I wonder how we'd be talking about football if we had won 2/3 of our games over the last 13 years? I think some would say we'd be ecstatic. But that's only because we aren't at that point. If we were at that point, I'm sure the daily comments would look very similar.

  19. Damn right. No one wants to play Kent and OU in November. There goes our attendance. The MAC cannot get any worse .... or can they? They are inept.

  20. While I agree with the sentiment, there are some vanes on Sat Nov. 24. What a complete disaster.

  23. I wish that was a trait this team possesed. You need to play hard for 40 minutes night in and night out. Feeling you can take minutes off during games is what leads to things like last night.

  24. Well for the November Games...this year is on pace to be the hottest year on record (beating out last year...which beat out the year before it...which beat out the year before it), so there's a wild chance we may have 75 degrees in November like we had in Februrary this year. Why in the hell do they schedule our Kent game in November...last year it was in October. Soooo Kent gets to benefit from good weather but the better stadium doesn't? The MAC is fundamentally stupid.

  26. You know, I have given a lot of thought to this over the years and even though I wish the Zips could go a couple of rounds in the NCAAs, I am proud of what KD has accomplished with the basketball program. He inherited a program that had one MAC tournament win in its 12 year history and turned them into a perennial contender. The Zips may not have been able to parlay their MAC success into post-season success, but you know what? We haven't had teams full of no-class thugs that can embarrass our institution at any given moment, either. There is a lot of value in that. Dambrot's players, by & large, have been kids that we can all be proud of instead of a bunch of low-character ballers that we hold our nose and tolerate just because they can win basketball games. I am pissed off that this version of the Zips has no killer instinct, but overall I can't bitch too much about Keith. We could regress to the Crawford years with the next hire. Then we would really have something to complain about.

  27. As a 15 + year season ticket holder I am probably in the minority in saying that I am not as concerned with a win in the NCAA tournament as some others on this board. My wife and I look forward to each game because most of the time (last night excluded) we see good young men who play fundamentally good basketball (although the defensive fundamentals this year have not been to the typical KD Akron standard) and who legitimately compete for wins and conference titles each year. This is entertainment for us and we appreciate the effort and commitment it takes to be a D1 athlete and we truly enjoy mid-major college basketball. As an alumnus I am proud of the program not only for its success but also for its graduation rate and good reputation for growing young men. I feel this time has the potential to win next week and move forward to the dance, but if they don't we can easily argue that our money for tickets was again well spent for the entertainment value provided. Go Zips Beat Kent.

  28. Well, if you want more, maybe move to Lexington or Durham where you get lots, lots more. The thing is though is that their fans are really cheering for the uniform and not the young men in that uniform. With the constant one, maybe two, and done kids the stars of the elite programs often leave early. Same with coaches always running to the next big paycheck. If that's your thing, you can have it. I'll take what I have here any day. My wife and I have been in contact with many past and present players and even some of their families through the years. More than a handful of Zip players have come to speak to and motivate the children who my wife teaches every day. If you could see the players interact with the kids you would be highly impressed. I love the fact that we have had four and sometimes five years to watch these players develop, both as players and, for the most, into fine young men. Maybe you think I'm full of crap and some of you may let me know it but I'm proud of what this program has accomplished over the years. This is a great mid major program. We should keep things in perspective and appreciate that.

  29. Yes, I'm sad that we lost on Senior Night and upset my son foul out! But we should of still won even without him in the game. Basketball is a team game and when one goes down the next man needs to step up! As a mom I'm very proud of Kwan and I know he works his butt off to come out here and try to win games. He will continue on this journey on becoming a great player & and just a better man. He's still trying to figure this out. He is just a passionate young player who wants to win and make his teammates better. Trust and believe God has a plan for my son. At the end of day Kwan leaves Akron with a degree and a masters so with that being said I THANK Akron for giving my son the opportunity that most young men don't get. Thanks to all the fans that supported him through all his ups & downs and will continue to support him.
