  2. You're welcome and thank you. It is pure pleasure for me to support this team. I wish I could do more for the program. I love getting to know all our players and wish the best for them in soccer, the classroom, and wherever life takes them. By the way, we know Michael Nanchoff is back as an assistant. I think Zips fans will be pleased when they see another former Zip helping out this Fall.

  4. The Zips have not officially announced the new additions to the 2019 roster However, with this tweet....it is fair game.... I would like to welcome Tom Smart to the soccer zips. New Mexico eliminated their soccer program after last year's play. Tom Smart was their starting left back last year and was on the league all conference teams more than once in his 3 years at New Mexico. Zips Nation is glad to have you in Akron....Mr. Smart

  9. Jup, interesting story. Another reason for Akron being late to join the MAC was Kent's AD, I believe his name was Erickson, did everything he could to stop Akron from getting in the MAC. I heard from our athletic people in the 70"s and 80's that Kent wanted to blackball Akron for as long as they could.

  11. True story about the Marshall-Akron relationship: The day after the MU team was killed in the plane crash in November 1970, Akron AD Gordon Larson called Ohio University AD Bill Rohr to suggest that the Zips fill the sudden opening in Ohio's schedule the following Saturday. Akron President Dominic Guzzetta told an Akron Beacon Journal reporter that the game would serve two purposes: 1.) honor the loss of the Marshall team and 2.) demonstrate the Zips' ability to compete with MAC programs. Ohio and the MAC presidents immediately rejected the idea as being in horrifically poor taste. Some longtime league officials claimed it caused the MAC to ignore Akron as a potential league member for many years.
