On the bright side, The Hudson Hammer Jonah Wieland seems to have shaken his early season yips. He had a great day punting the ball.3 points

Meh. It was a frustrating game. A big reason was all of the flags. My gawd they were calling everything and anything. Quite a few questionable calls, but when you're rebuilding, and playing a team like Troy, this will happen. Some of the penalties come from a lack of discipline, and if I don't see an improvement in those types of penalties, I'll be concerned with this staff. I think a lot of fans underestimated Troy. And the impact Tom Arth's recruiting class (they're all freshmen!!!) has on the team. The players on the field are Bowden's Boys with a couple possible exceptions, and they sucked last year (which is why Bowden is no longer here). So I'm not throwing TA under the bus just yet. It'll take a couple years to see how his recruiting classes pan out.3 points

Don't bet on it bigzipguy, I'm not happy at all with this start, nor the play and lack of scoring, but I'm still willing to think we can rally and win the MAC and get the autobid to the NCAAs. Not sure we'll go very deep and certainly won't see a home match or a first round bye, but this team's core is still proud to the extent that they know what it means to keep that streak alive, and may have to (and may already have) adjusted their seasonal goals to a MAC Championship and a berth in the NCAAs.2 points

I do not think the recruiting class has ANYTHING to do with what is going on with our football team. Yeah sure, there are few playing especially on defense but for the most part the guys starting are Bowdens guys. Personally, I think Arth did ok recruiting given he got a late start at it. Rarely do freshmen make any difference their first year. You really can't say how good a recruiting class is until a couple of years down the road.2 points

I've been a quiet observer here, but a longtime Zips fan. What stands out to me by attending games, is the lackluster fan base. Our team ran out of the locker room to fans sitting in their seats, hardly cheering. Down seasons are down for everyone - the fans, the players, and the coaches. I can't fathom the players and coaches like losing. The only way to encourage and lift your team is up by showing up and cheering them on...no matter what. Perhaps the energy shown here in dragging the team through the mud should be placed into standing up on your feet, cheering them onto the field at the start, and continuing to cheer them on through the game would put a little bit of excitement into the team. And by cheering, I don't mean ripping them a new one when they mess up. Road games are hard without the backing of your fans, home games shouldn't be the same way.1 point

Syracuse is the only school in NY that is rolling in the money on athletics and it's private so I don't think this would apply to them. All these type of laws are going to do is force public schools to reduce or eliminate athletics all together. It seems the general populous thinks because schools like OSU, Michigan, Alabama, USC, etc. are rolling in the money that all other schools are as well. Between division 1 & 2 there are nearly 700 athletic programs. I'd have to guess 90% of those rely heavily on student subsidies already to fund their athletics. They're now going to have to raise student athletic fees even more as laws like these further reduce the little revenue athletics generates.1 point

If they'd build a mini "Green Monster" wall in left field they could create a little more room for the grandstands & concourse as well as give it an old-school urban stadium feel.1 point

I love Arth's demeanor. He's a teacher who remains positive. I would have loved to have played for a coach like Arth.1 point

I don't know where that information come from, but at present they have 26 players on scholarship. I don't see them winning right off the bat (pardon the pun) but this is a serious program with a serious head coach and staff.1 point

No disrespect, but I disagree. Kato is out there leading by example. He has come a long way. I would bet every teammate would back his effort. Dude is giving up his body. He probably won't be able to start next week, so you will be able to see what the offense looks like without him.1 point

OMG, are you watching the same games I am? Corne does most of his work on his back after he gets bull rushed and knocked over. Today they moved Council to center after Peterson snapped the ball over the QBs head which resulted in a turnover on our 20 yrd line...Sorry to say it but Muldowney and Forman are both undersized to play guard or tackle. In D1 ball, you need your big boy pants on. We need minimum 300 pounders across the front that can also move their feet. At tackle you also need length (6"6' or taller) to go with that 300+lbs. Look at our roster and you will quickly see who have the physical attributes. To me if you're not 300+lbs, your a development player plain and simple. These coaches need to be realistic and get the correct players in positions that they can make the greatest impact. The number 2s should be guys that are always challenging the 1s to keep them from getting too comfortable. These coaches have 2s that are undersized true freshman that pose no real threat. That is a formula for failure.....1 point

The thing that is bothering me the most is the apathetic feeling at the tail gates and at the games. The lots are no where near full for tailgating, and these lots are in prime locations. Also, the responses on this forum are sparse. If there was a lot of interest, there would be many comments, even if they were thoughtless and negative. Also, I counted less than 100 students in the student section during the first half. Many left at half time. We used to go to the Rubber Bowl for every game. How much fun would it have been to have football on campus. We could tap the keg, drink, go to the first half, go back to the dorm, finish the keg, and come back for the second half. There is no interest for Zips football. If you are a student or an alum, I do not understand it. OK, go ahead and rip me but we need to get interest in the University of Akron Zips.1 point

I saw a pic from Dr Z of our RT with the club arm (broken hand?) blocking one handed. He's showing some manliness being out there with this injury, but it does seem some experimenting should be done over there? Really like the thought of putting Council at RT. I think Corne can play at guard and maybe bring in Sample or Kallay at the other guard spot. Not sure what happened to Muldowney, but he may not match up well with this new offense or something. I hope Sands is OK after his broken leg a while back. He just does not seem to be the same.1 point

Wow. Marshall scores twice in rapid fashion near the 80-minute mark to go up 2-1. Still about 7 minutes to go but we're staring at 0 - 6. Edit 2-1 final. Akron now 0-6-0.0 points
