  1. In regards to Livingston's "logic": I've never understood the arguement either way about who you faced in college determining your pro ability. While the "big" schools do have better overall talent, most of them still only have a few pro caliber players on their roster. If his logic was true, then why at one point last season were 15% of the starting QB's from the MAC?
  2. to add to skip-zip: Charlie is now where he should have been 3 years ago; in a backup role learning from a real coach and a real veteran QB. Yes, he will play little, which once again is what should have been happening all along in Cleveland. I don't think any of us expected him to step right in and be a star QB. I personally thought that after 2 or 3 years as a backup he could make a strong push to be the starter, however the inept Browns panicked and shoved him into the starters role. Even the Charlie "realists" on this board should be able to see this pattern repeating itself over and over with the Browns.
  3. uakronkid: my thoughts exactly. I said this to my pards when they first gave up so much to get Quinn. He will be afforded "excuses" that the other QB's would not, especially with the fans.In regards to the post about them only getting a 6th round pick for Charlie. What the heck were they supposed to get for him when the idiots played their hand by bringing Dorsey back? Any other team would have made the move, THEN brought Dorsey back. I am beginning to wonder about Savage, and I am a huge fan of his.
  4. In regards to g-mann's #2 about the tickets being spread out: I have heard this same thing from people at other schools when they travel to the BCS schools. I watched the Mich/App St game, and at least on TV it appeared that their fans were spread out, with a handful here and there amongst a sea of Mich fans. Don't think for a minute that these type of things aren't done on purpose. I for one won't be surprised if we do the same thing at the new stadium!
  5. On the front page of the Beacon sports is their new "team" of reporters. Where is the U of A beat reporter? Nice to know we will see plenty of articles regarding Tressel's sweatervests while scouring the pages for a two inch article on the Zips upcoming game.
  6. Ala Kenny Roda, I realize they are said just to get a reaction, but I love the research that goes into some of the comments that end up on these posts...We had pathetic defenses while Charlie Frye was the quarterback. The Zips averaged 28.4 points a game during his tenure, yet they gave up 31.3 points a game. They were 21-25 during his four years. Anyone who actually went to games realizes that without him we wouldn't have won that many. I believe the troubles he is having in the NFL (i.e. forcing throws, trying to make plays) is a direct result of the multitude of times he had to bail the Zips out.
  7. Good luck to both of them in the NFL. Always like to see the local boys do well. I wish I would have saved the magazine, but when Zwick was a senior there was a national recruiting magazine (i.e. OSU impartial) that had him listed as "overated". I remember them saying he wasn't even one of the top 5 QB's in Ohio, let alone the country (I believe he was a Parade All American that year). He was definetly one of those players that probably would have had a great career at a mid major.
  8. Check out the athletics section of the Akron website, my wife is doing a similar thing for a fundraiser for the kids of a freind that passed away. She found a form that you have to send in. It is under the "athletics department" tab, "donation requests".
  9. His relationship with Lebron could actually hurt him. The Cavs may want nothing to do with the publicity of a perceived "charity case", especially if he would make the team. People are always going to think he only got in because of that, even if he shows that he deserves to be there. Romeo may not even want to deal with it. Going overseas is probably his best route.
  10. He also brings up what my buddy and I have discussed for years...schools such as Akron, Can't, Toledo, CSU, YSU, etc.. have something to compete with that many of their peer schools/conferences don't have to...other major colleges and multiple pro teams in their area.It all boils down to spending cash, and on any given weekend you can have the Zips, Can't State, OSU, Browns, Cavs, Cleveland State, and others all competing for your $$. As Gaffney said, many schools are the only game in town. I still remember being in Huntington, WV one weekend and Marshall having huge crowds at both a football game and an exhibition basketball game going on the same day.Unfortunately, the Zips are more than likely going to lose out when choices have to be made. Hopefully that will change as we improve our teams and facilities. Even that offers no guarantees, as Can't has built a winning tradition in hoops and they draw less than we do.
  11. I don't think anyone sees him at PF. I also don't see him having no SF skills. He was stuck playing PF at Akron because we had no size with skill. The fact that he was all MAC for two years and POY this year will more than likely get him a look (the Lebron connection won't hurt either). We all think we are experts in evaluating talent, when in fact we really no very little. A quick look at the current SF's in the NBA shows such stellar names as Linton Johnson, Joe Shipp, Roger Powell, and Quinton Ross. Can anyone one of us say we have heard of them or know why they are in the NBA? And back to Ira, his career numbers at Miami were 8.9 ppg and 6.4 rpg, and he was honorable mention all mac one year. Why would any GM have an interest in that?
  12. It really depends on where he ends up. Heck, if guys like Ira Newble & Stephen Graham can make the Cavs & the NBA there is no reason Romeo can't have a shot. Newble is 6'7" with little or no small forward skills and he has been a part time starter! I don't even remember him being an impact player at the MAC level. At least that can be said about Romeo.
  13. Does anyone know if the schools control what is in their stores? I have now been to the Chapel Hill and Eylria stores and both have pretty much "zip" for Akron. As soon as you walk in there are coats for just about every MAC school except Akron. I even saw Robert Morris coats!
  14. Of course the Columbus Beacon Journal only talked about the 2 going to OSU.
  15. perhaps add or replace home wins with:11 road wins (13 if you count Cleveland)
  16. There is a post on Bobcat Attack wondering if they turned down the bid. With some of the bottom feeding teams that are actually in, any chance of this?
  17. Did anyone else notice that on the second page of the Beacon sports section they have the game time listed as 6:00? I checked the MAC and Q sites, and they both still show 7:00.
  18. I think the FAU fan missed what the point was. Why would he choose them football wise, not intagibles wise. Going by that, the kid made his decision based on the weather and pretty girls. If that was truly a deciding factor then Hawaii should be number 1 in every sport! From the description, they sound much like we were when making the jump for 1-AA; loading up on bigger programs and getting killed (FAU was outscored 192-20 in 2006 by the "big boys"), and bringing in a name coach whose better days may be behind him (according to their website, Schnellenberger was out of coaching for four years prior to taking over). In regards to "he just wins", he has a career winning percentage of .544 which is boosted by a .719 at Miami. He has losing records at 2 of the other 3 schools, and 5-5-1 at the other. In regards to the conferences, I'll take the MAC anyday. For what its worth, the Sunbelt was 1-3 vs the MAC this year, with their only win coming against Eastern. Plus, the MAC does have a little more history, especially bowl wise. Admittedly, neither conference had a stellar power rating this year, but we do have 4 more teams, which always leads to a few really bad programs killing the rating. Take out just Eastern and Buffalo and we jump even higher above them that we already are.
