Yes, we've played 3 teams thus far in OOC play who have a pulse. We lost all three games and were ran out of the gym in two of them. Fortunately for us the majority of the MAC is the same caliber of the cupcakes many here complain about us scheduling OOC.
-
There typically is a long break this time of year because we don't schedule games during finals week, which makes sense.
-
I honestly don't follow the Horizon enough to know. My comment was based off them being 4th in the Horizon in NET when I looked earlier in the week.
-
A middle of the pack Horizon team at that.
-
Right now Milwaukee has more offensive rebounds than we have defensive. You're not going to win many games when you allow your opponent to rebound 50% of their misses.
-
I wouldn't be surprised if we see some changes in the near future regarding this. Even many of the big schools, who the portal benefits the most, aren't a fan that the portal is opened prior to bowls being played.
-
Yes, it's interesting because even though this is technically a neutral court game it's not in reality. The same as when the Zips played St. Bonaventure in Cleveland last year.

Mikal Dawson dropped 27 for Marshall in that win. I'm glad to see he's playing well. He never looked the same post injury while at Akron.

Bama wouldn't be ranked ahead of several 2 loss P5 teams if SOS didn't matter. OSU wouldn't be ranked ahead of 1 loss Indiana. Penn State, Texas, and Georgia wouldn't be ranked ahead of Notre Dame. SOS certainly plays some sort of factor. Saying it meant nothing at all is just disingenuous. It just didn't mean as much as you wanted it to, which is fine if you feel that way. I won't argue there. If the committee currently cared only about ratings then Alabama would be in over SMU. Bama has a vastly larger following and would attract a larger TV audience. I don't disagree that the 12 best teams likely aren't in. However, claiming who the 12 best teams are is very subjective. You don't have the large sample size like you do in basketball to more accurately measure teams. More and more conferences are moving to 9 game conference schedules. The SEC remains at 4, but they all play an FCS game so it's still really only 3 OOC games thar you can use to measure them against others.
-
If that was true then Army would have gotten in ahead of all 2 loss teams. SOS certainly matters to some degree. Maybe not as much as some would prefer *cough Alabama*, but it definitely is weighed in.

This is kind of where I stand as well. The majority of the MAC schools have already gutted the basketball budget to focus on football. We get more return for the $$$ by focusing on basketball since others are committing less time and resources to it. No MAC school is going to sniff the 12 team playoff. Not in this day and age of NIL and freedom to transfer at will. It's still very possible for a MAC school to make the Sweet 16. There is no reason that MAC school can't be us.

Cutting cross country doesn't really save much money. I know they talked about making baseball self funded when they revived the program. I have no idea how true that ended up being. Baseball I know at most northern schools is among the most expensive Olympic sports to run, but if it's 70%-80% booster funded, cutting it probably doesn't save us much money either.
-
We've already seen it. Bowden had an 8-5 season and it didn't change anything. It would take prolonged success before Joe Akron's opinion of the program would ever change.
-
Yes, my comments just wasn't about the money. He jokingly said his full-time job is being the GM for the basketball program. He's very involved in the recruiting process and takes time to meet with the kids when they come to campus. I'm saying it's not feasible for 1 guy to be as involved in every facet when you're actively trying to bring in 5x the number of players compared to basketball in a given year. It would need to be a more divide and conquer approach.
-
Why would the MVC want them for Olympic sports? It's a basketball first conference and NIU is horrendous. My guess is the best they could hope for would be something like the Horizon, Summit, or OVC. That's also probably why Toledo isn't taking a harder look at the invite. Toledo actually cares about basketball. They likely don't want to take a huge step down in basketball just so they can fly halfway a crossed to country to play in a slightly better G5 conference. Mind you all the best MWC football schools were raided already by the PAC-12.
-
I think that's easier said than done. Basketball has 13 scholarship players per roster. In a year where you turn over half your roster you're recruiting 6-7 new guys. In football, where all schools are spending more money and resources to recruit, you have 85 scholarships. Between transfers and incoming freshman, you're recruiting ~30 players a year. Not to mention spending time to re-recruit the remaining ~55 guys to avoid them from entering the portal. You would probably need ~5 Bud Wentz for football to have a similar impact. Pretty much one required per position group.
-
It might of been in that audio file from a podcast someone shared, but I thought Bud in the interview said he was assisting people in getting a collective started for football. I'm not sure where that's at or if it ever got off the ground. It sounded basketball keeps Bud busy. It would likely take Kaulig or someone else to take the lead for football.

The numbers I saw elsewhere were 7 million over 5 years, $1.4 million/yr. Exactly double what he's making currently. He's 60 and this is his last chance for a pay day to set his family up long-term. I can't really blame him. It's just more sad to see how far the MAC has fallen. 10 years ago it it was bottom feeder P5 coaches or upper tier G5 programs plucking our top coaches. Now the bottom feeders at other G5 programs are now able to do the same.

NET rankings aren't necessarily about wins and losses. In the eyes of NET a 1 point loss on the road at Kentucky is going to be better than a 8 point win at home against some NET 300+ team.
-
I feel as though UMass has had more funding than MAC schools for quite some time. They still often find themselves in or around the bottom 10 as they don't seem to have spent it well.

This is my take away from all this discussion as well.

Groce inherited both Utomi and Ivey who were both great. The issue was there wasn't much besides them. -

Exactly, it's probably the heaviest recruited area in the country. The part of the country that I feel gets slept on is the Midwestern states of MN, WI, IL, etc. Those states don't produce a ton of 5* talent so it appears many schools spend little to no time recruiting it. It however has a lot of quality G5 talent. Much of that talent seems to find its way onto the the roster of the Dakota FCS programs, which dominate the subdivison. -
I saw that one. I was referring to the OP. @Blue & Goldshared a tweet from professional zip. I can read professional Zips tweet, but the account he was referencing appears to have since been deleted.
