Scholarships don't really cost the university much money. Not really much marginal cost in letting a kid sit in a class that has an empty desk. Really it's just the cost of food and utilities.
-
Yes, that CB we got from WVU is a prime example. He played a decent amount as a true freshman, but didn't see the field much the past 2 years. He comes to Akron and we get 2 years of eligibility out of him. I'm assuming he'll start both years. Tying up scholarships on redshirts doesn't make as much sense now that you can bring in transfers that can play day 1.
-
This years already pretty picked over at the high school level and Akron needs players that can help them immediately. I'd expect 80% of this years recruits to be transfers and juco players.

Moorhead’s Akron Coaching Staff 2022
kreed5120 replied to akrzips2012's topic in Akron Zips Football
It can't be a worse run defense than what we witnessed this season -
Our 3-27 record over the past 3 seasons would support this claim. Going 6-6 while finishing 6th or 7th in the MAC is no real accomplishment. It would be for Moorhead's 1st or 2nd season as he's starting from ground zero, but eventually the goal should be to win 8+ each season.

Keeping up with the Three D's (Dambrot, Dru & Duquesne)

First I heard that. I'd say I'm happy with the way things turned out by getting Groce. -
Nearly 2/3 of all FBS teams go to bowls. Making a bowl game isn't really an accomplishment anymore. They hand bowl bids out like participation trophies.
-
I hope Groce takes note and runs a press against Kent when we face them later in the season...18 turnovers

Moorhead’s Akron Coaching Staff 2022
kreed5120 replied to akrzips2012's topic in Akron Zips Football
I thought I saw somewhere that @Hilltopper posted that Moorhead will be both the HC and OC freeing up some extra money to hire better assistants elsewhere. When he speaks I listen as he's proven to know what he talks about. -
I'm guessing neither are anywhere near the top of that list now given the volume of 3s shot now.

Fordham and App State are better than you think they are. Both would be solidly middle of the MAC this season. Fordham has a NET ranking of 167, which is better than Akron's. App State is #203, which is only 29 spots below Akron. Both those teams would beat Radford by double figures as well.
-
Radford NET Ranking is 281 and Kenpom is 262. We're not missing anything besides practice from this game not being played. Their wins were against William & Mary (#351 NET) and Eastern Kentucky (#234 NET).

The extra year of covid definitely impacted those numbers. Schools that may have had 20 scholarships available in a normal year now have 14-15 as they now have a handful of 6th year seniors. I'd expect that Ohio number to climb into the 80s by the time schools fill out what's left of their roster. You have to remember a lot of recruits reopened their recruiting process once the coaches that they committed to were fired.

I'll try to update this periodically throughout the year. As we get more data points, these rankings should start looking more realistic. Buffalo - 83 Ohio - 85 Toledo - 101 Miami (OH) - 132 Kent St. - 145 Akron - 174 Eastern Mich. - 210 Bowling Green - 215 Ball St. - 243 Northern Ill. - 299 Western Mich. - 322 Central Mich. - 346 We've climbed 44 spots since the original rankings 10 days ago. I do agree the Florida tournament really tanked our numbers. Not necessarily by losing to Fordham and App State as both based off NET are middle of the road MAC teams, but because of how much we lost to them by. Fordham - 168 App State - 198 Edit: I already feel these rankings are more reflective than the prior ones I shared. I feel UB and Ohio have looked the best thus far with Toledo just a little behind them. After those three teams Miami/Kent/Akron have looked to be about on par with one another. Bowling Green and EMU have looked mediocre. The rest of the MAC has been garbage.
-
Yes, we're 3-0 all-time against them. The last time we played them was 2016. I vaguely remember them. Not the game itself, but them being on our schedule.
-
To be fair LCJ, Cheese, and Banks was a hell of a backcourt trio.
-
They also came in 2-6. They aren't as good as people thought they would be coming into the season.
-
I'd have no interest in Akron have a 10k+ arena. Crowds look small enough in the the 5500 arena we have now.
-
Right or wrong it's what it was always going to turn into. A car dealership in Columbus was never going to give money to a kid going to Toledo.
-
I don't know the specifics. I heard something about them giving him some sort of webcast reality show.
-
Not sure of the accuracy, but I heard he got $1 mil from Barstool Sports and another $1 million from Jerry Jones to go to Jackson State. We don't have that kind of booster money.
-
It's surprising this will only be our second true road game of the year. IMO we should have scheduled more road games this OOC to better prepare ourselves for trying to win in hostile environment come conference play.

Moorhead’s Akron Coaching Staff 2022
kreed5120 replied to akrzips2012's topic in Akron Zips Football
It seems a bit odd that the whole staff is pretty much in place excluding the 2 most important positions. I have to think Moorhead has people lined up and who they are just hasn't leaked yet. -
Joe Moorhead Officially Hired as Head Football Coach
kreed5120 replied to Dr Z's topic in Akron Zips Football
Oregon was his only previous offer from the sounds of his tweet. Also, with a new staff coming in I doubt the new coach would honor that offer.
