Totally Agree! We've got several GREAT shirts, sweatshirts and hats, from them, even a couple Christmas Ornaments! Great company with innovative ways to get around traditional branding.

One thing they REALLY need to do - or not do - tonight is miss lay-ups. Sooo many missed opportunites the last few games in the paint. RB seems to be forcing the shot, and over-shooting the rim, and the same goes for Layne. But Molly has been consistent down low, so just need the rest to make the bunnies.

Keeping up with the Three D's (Dambrot, Dru & Duquesne)
zippy-claws replied to dirtyolcrowe's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
Careful now, you're going to ruffle the feathers of the "Charles The Great" supporters here..... -
The women never seem ready to play from tip-off. I'm not the stat geek, and don't want to take the time, but how many times have we been waaay down at the start and have to fight out way back. Eastern Michigan for sure, Central Michigan as well. Both games in Florida vs. Stetson and Bethune Cookman. Miami too. Last night they got completely away from their game plan (or what I thought it was) right from the start when BSU was draining 3s. In the Zips defense (or lack of it!) they've ran across some unbelievable 3-point shooting opponents, but it doesn't seem like the shots are really contested. Oh well, we'll see how Saturday goes. Hoped more men's games fans would stick around after the last double-header, I know after these last 2 results they won't, sadly. But...Go Zips!

I agree that's an issue. But one of the factors here is the up-temp game that MJ runs. This team is up and down the court a lot, and rarely walks the ball up or runs a more patented offense. Part of that is the 30-second clock, but it's a run-and-gun offense, get the ball to the bigs before the D gets set. Like others have mentioned, the bench is not deep and so this lends to the fatigue level at the end of the games. The way this game was lost is the issue, because if you watched on TV or in person, you'd have to admit the Zips dominated right out of the gate, and looked so much more aggressive than Wednesday night at EMU. Fatigue and doubt crept in and BGSU took advantage of it.

And also, what may have transpired between Guthrie and Beal during the interval since he was hired? Not to take away from the obvious BS Beals created here, but was it provoked in some way? Why would you even listen to another offer before your first game as a HC here?

The Coppin State game was a nice way to finish off the non-conference schedule, and it was a good game for the women, as CS played a very physical, up-tempo game. It should prepare them for the MAC at a nice time, coming off the Florida trip. FT shooting was not strong, oddly, but Bass made an unbelievably off balance put-back from a near prone position that was a highlight! The CS coach was hilarious! Tried to get thrown out, thought he was thrown out, but hadn't been...until he walked off the floor and got the second T. I'm predicting a 9-13 season, sadly....but it could be a 500 season if things happen right.

And the crowd was HUGE! not....but the Zips women played well, and ESPN+ coverage wasn't bad. Very cold start but they were the more athletic team and it kicked in in the second quarter, and they withstood a Stetson run in the 3rd and won by 8. Dominque Camp looked (sacrilege!) Dawson-esque in her best game as a Zip. These are games they should win, so the MAC will be intriguing to see. But nice early morning (although we watched after the World Cup on DVR) Victory.

2022-23 Akron Football Off-season Tracker

Really?????? NFL????? -
It was a huge loss for Akron when Dennis Mitchell "retired", and his entire coaching staff left. It took until November for the new coach and the women's cross country coach, who uses his title Doctor in his resume and on-line entry, to put their staff of assistants together. A throws coach from a D2 school, although a solid training from his college years, A high school pole vault coach and another D2 sprint coach from Illinois. And looking at the new roster on GoZips, it's a little light other than Mitchell's holdovers. I think our days of dominating this sport in the MAC and sending double-digit athletes to the NCAAs may be a pipe dream, short term....We'll see.

Thanks Captain, I agree. We were watching and I kept suggesting turning to another game, but the announcers were very fair, and as you said, benevolent. The "color" kept talking about the Zips in glowing terms. He obviously did his homework on the Zips prior to the game, and was very knowledgeable, and seemed to have empathy for what the Zips were going through.

Thanks to both of you (and others) for posting about WBB and for following! Nice to see interest, and you're right, they're playing well, and showing great strides, and a nice push in the 4th quarter to get the job done last night!

MAC Tourney Championship Game - Nov 12 v WMU
zippy-claws replied to Zip_ME87's topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
So now you're going to hide behind semantics. Your hatred for the MAC is duly noted and has been. The headline simply means they are dropping mens soccer, not "sponsoring it". The MAC, no matter how badly you hate it, has been trying to provide men's soccer as a Championship since Akron joined in 1993. That season, there were only 6 MAC teams, Akron, WMU, EMU, Miami and BG, and CMU. CMU dropped out in 1995, and the MAC got Kentucky to make it 6. NIU joined the MAC in 1997 and there were 7 teams. 1998 saw Marshall and Buffalo join the MAC in soccer. making it a robust 8 teams. Miami dropped mens soccer in 1999, EMU dropped mens soccer in 2000. Marshall left the MAC in 2002, leaving Akron, WMU, BG, Kentucky, NIU and Buffalo. Marshall rejoined the league in 2003. Kentucky and Marshall left the league in 2005, and the MAC went out and got IUPFW to make 6. 2007 saw IUPFW leave, and the MAC got Hartwick so they could have the required 6. In 2009 the MAC added Florida Atlantic for soccer. West Virginia joined in 2012 and we were back to 8 teams. Hartwick and Florida Atlantic left in 2014. 2017 saw SIU Edwardsville added. When WVU left, MAC added 2 schools, they left, and the MAC added Chicago State. It would have been very easy for the MAC to drop mens soccer many times throughout the years when the team roster dropped near or below the NCAA required level, but they didn't. You can't force your member schools to carry a sport. -

Here here! Hardy saw him in the first half of the season, and now he's a key to the offense. -
MAC Tourney Championship Game - Nov 12 v WMU
zippy-claws replied to Zip_ME87's topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
It's not the MACs fault that their member schools don't offer men's soccer. A conference doesn't "sponsor" a sport. If a school chooses not to fund a program, the MAC can't prop it up by funding being offered. It has everything to do with Title IX and football budgets. Look at most major conferences and the mid-majors and well, and you'll see a handful of men's sports, and a plethora of women's sports. -
TIPOFF RECEPTION at the JAR ARENA - THURSDAY, NOV. 3 at 7 PM
zippy-claws replied to Akron1's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
Try doing it without a Marketing Director, and only two SIDs, 1 videographer and 3 GAs wit zero experience covering football, mens and womens soccer, volleyball swimming and diving, rifle and now mens and womens basketball all at the same time. You can put lipstick on the JAR with new lighting and a new floor, but you gut the admin staff and expect "other school in the MAC" amenities? -
Watched last night and it was a fun game, the Zips women shot 75% in first half, and it was actually better, as they took a few wild 3s to end the half. They play a very fast paced game, and they are tall. Foul trouble in Bass and Ferrell caught up with them. The new players need to mesh, and of course they're looking to replace Dawson, but looking forward to in-person vs. Dayton Sunday.

So, warm weather, 0% chance of rain, no Browns game, playing for the Championship...should be a packed stadium tonight, no? And the ABJ has done a marvelous job of building this one up, and publicizing it, thank you Mr. Bourneval. Will the Stadium be full? Will the casual fan and students show up? EDIT: I forgot to add Senior Night too!

How about Woman's Coach - I know all of you will say "Oh, give Jen a chance!" I did. I know she doesn't have the talent, but other than 1 surprising game this season, doesn't have a clue re: D1 womens soccer. We'll see how the recruiting process goes, but I can't see a former D3 coach shining in that aspect either. If you don't understand the level of play, how can you recruit to it?

I know you're right, but from from my perception as a "non-Xs-and-Os" fan, I'm enjoying watching the games a heck of a lot more this year, although still frustrated.

2023 Zips soccer recruits
zippy-claws replied to TennZip's topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
To @TennZip and @Zip_ME87, or anyone else for that matter, when these players play for an academy team like the Crew or IMG or one of the other MLS team's academies, are their matches against other academy teams, and does anyone attend their matches? I'm sure the caliber of play is very high, but didn't know if the "experience" was the same as if they had played for a HS team? Just curious.
