  1. I wasn’t challenging it bigjim. Didn’t mean for it to come off that way. Just pointed out MaxPreps wasn’t always the most reliable source when I coached. Im not one that’s big into HS stats as it is. Different levels of competition can skew those. However, I am excited about Wasel. Wasn’t sure if you meant me, but just wanted to clarify what I meant by my response.
  2. If I’m not mistaken, NMSU was able to prove they did everything in their power to make the game up against SDSU and were denied. They even went as far as scheduling a 12th game against Valparaiso as a replacement. But since only 1 FCS game can count towards bowl eligibility, the game against Valparaiso is nothing more than a game counting towards overall stats and final record.
  3. No idea why the staff did not offer, but it could be a multitude of reasons. Possible he said he wasn’t interested in Akron and did not want to be recruited by the staff. Or a host of other reasons. I had a kid that played QB for me and was being recruited by a number of schools as a TE. LSU came in to visit and I told him to tell the recruiter that he’d play any position they asked. Come to find out, my kid told the recruiter he was only willing to play QB in college and so LSU did not offer. Not saying that happened in Sterling’s case as I’m sure he’ll play RB, but pointing that out because you never know what the conversations were. Or maybe the staff is just flat out whiffing on this one?
  4. I’m not sure what all goes into it outside of academic eligibility. I feel Vandy is the most deserving of all the 5 win teams regardless of APR.
  5. I believe it goes by Academic Progress Rate, but I’m not sure what all goes into that formula. My understanding is that 3 bowl games were still open. NMSU was granted one. Rice has the top Academic Progress rate of the 5 win teams so they also get one. Now it’s down to either Buffalo with a win or UNLV with a Buffalo loss. Assuming all the eligible teams actually accept the bowl invites. If not, then more 5 win teams will be extended invitations.
  6. Yep, most schools do have staff members that monitor portal activity. The only restrictions concerning adding coaches to the staff is whether or not they are considered “on field coaches.” Those spots are limited. Outside of that, a coaching staff can be as big as the budget allows.
  7. New Mexico State received a waiver to become bowl eligible with 5 wins since they had a game cancelled earlier this year. They are playing Valparaiso as a replacement game, but the outcome does not matter. If Buffalo wins they will be bowl eligible. If Buffalo loses, UNLV gets in as the next 5 win team. Comical as they just fired their coach.
  8. Absolutely. NCAA put the portal windows in place for attempted relief, but recruiting is still happening, just not directly through the player until the window opening. The offshoot to the portal is it has limited spots for high school players. Most schools are now taking only about 1/2 to 2/3 of a class of high school players. I’m blown away by the amount of high school kids still holding out for better offers when they aren’t likely to come.
  9. Daly has been added. Not sure how I missed Swanson.
  10. Yeah, he’s been on fire today. Hottest prospect in the portal until it opens up for FBS players on Monday.
  11. Sounds like he’s had a great year. I’m assuming Maxpreps is more up to date on their info than when I coached. They often had my teams playing the same team two or three times in a year with the same score and stats. Needless to say it messed up the overall record and stats for my teams.
  12. Towson DL Jesus Gibbs received an offer. He’s a former South Carolina commitment from the 2018 class as an OL, but played both ways in high school. Gibbs eventually made his way to Towson.
  13. Just an FYI that some of these kids likely won’t be playing D1 ball next year despite having multiple offers. The portal is expected to have more entries than ever and some of the high school kids waiting on “better offers” are going to find themselves having to look elsewhere.
  14. Not that he needed it, but a little extra motivation for George against Buffalo and going into 2023.
  15. We also finished with the top passing offense in MAC play. Which is why it’s head scratching when our 3 best receivers, who finished in the top 10 of most MAC receiving categories, didn’t all make it on a team. Outside of that, can’t leave Bubba off of first team and Irons was also deserving of a spot so they put 2 QBs on the third team. Whigan was absolutely our best OL, so it was nice to see him recognized. Argument could also be made for Thompson to have been on the 3rd team. Despite our record, we definitely had a handful of standout players this year. Especially in conference play.
  16. Zips issued the first portal offer for All-American and All-SoCon selection DB Alijah Huzzie from East Tennessee State.
  17. Feels like some politics there. No way all 3 of our WRs don’t make at least one of the teams. A little jarring that Shockey missed the first team when he was on national award watchlists.
  18. Sounds right to me. This article does a nice job of breaking down the bowl tie-ins. https://collegefootballnews.com/2022/07/college-football-bowl-ties-affiliations-for-each-conference-2022-2023/7
  19. A few takeaways: - Sounds like the OL is now settled into a rotation of Landers at LT, Whigan at RG, Williams at RT. Georges, Robarge, and Kilbane splitting time at LG and C. JoeMo said Georges, Robarge, and Kilbane came in as walk-ons but did not say if they are all currently on scholarship. He didn’t mention it but Chambers has also seen some time at LT, giving Landers a break for a series or two. - Hawkins saw time in the heavy D packages at NT and held his ground. - Corey Thomas is now officially a DB, playing mostly Nickel but considered a Safety. - Terry has played his best football the past two games. - I don’t remember his exact verbiage, but he said something along the lines of Kellom probably has a little more shiftiness and burst to him than Wiley and Price, but needs to add on more weight. - JoeMo was happy with the rotation at Linebacker, but don’t have the bodies for the same kind of rotation along the defensive line or secondary. (My words here and not his) Its concerning that some of the young guys like Fann and Lawson still haven’t developed enough to give us anything. - Looking forward to the matchup with Buffalo.
  20. Trent Dilfer new HC at UAB.
  21. Looks like this report was false. GT removing the interim tag and keeping Brent Key. Things change quickly.
  22. Take this for what it’s worth…
  23. I’m not going to call out any players by name but there are still some on the roster that should probably be playing at a lower level. Keep in mind the roster by the end of 2021 was probably the worst in the FBS, so some changes needed to be made. And still do. It’s a balancing act more than ever with the 85 scholarship limit. For the most part, coaches know which players will be hitting the portal before it’s announced, but there will always be a few surprises.
  24. Saw that, but didn’t think too much of it. If P5 offers start rolling in, I’ll be worried. Although, I know there was some talk earlier in the year about SDSU joining the PAC, but not sure where that stands.
  25. Wouldn’t be surprised. He’s a player JoeMo recruited out of high school. Also expect the staff to at least reach out to Oregon 4 star WR Dont’e Thornton.
