Increasing JAR Attendance/Engaging the Fans
ZipCat replied to clarkwgriswold's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
You must have been there when I was. The year we played Tennessee the on-campus enrollment was 32,000. I checked it the other day. It's not even 12,000 now. A little over 10,000 undergrads, and a little over ~1,000 graduate students. Scarborough was a devastating blow to the University, and Stark State moving in because of changes to State funding for Public Universities forcing UA to scrap Summit College, the University has been in a death spiral for near of a decade. My friends who are faculty at YSU talk about Akron being the model for what is taking place in Public Universities; scrap all the programs to bare-bones and become a papermill. I'm not shocked the AK Rowdies barely exist anymore, the student body barely exists anymore. -
TBH, student-athletes should have always been allowed to transfer at will. Just like they can transfer at will as a student. College athletics was never intended to be a $multi-billion industry.

Akron to play Ohio State to open the 2024 season
ZipCat replied to LZIp's topic in Akron Zips Football
IDK I agree with GP1 on this point. That particular program for next season looks like it's definitely in decline. If we had a better Akron team, that's one I would highlight as a potential upset like the Akron vs. Michigan game a decade ago. -
Akron to play Ohio State to open the 2024 season
ZipCat replied to LZIp's topic in Akron Zips Football
Same. Zips Football is unfortunately basically dead to me at this point. Used to have season tickets. Used to get hyped about every game. Now I don't really care. I'll watch Akron vs. OSU, I'll watch a few games until they get out of hand and then move on to something else. Playing YSU definitely wouldn't interest me any more either. WINNING CONSISTENTLY is just about the only thing that would reignite my interest in Zips football again. -
Apparently GP1 and I are kindred spirits 😂

Well, that's because the taxpayers don't generally support the sports of public universities. Taxpayer support for universities has declined over the decades, and most of that is considered an investment in training a workforce...or something something [insert political initiative here]. It's the students; with their tuition money, taking on debt to pay for these programs. It's basically a Ponzi scheme. The constant inflow of new students to fund the thing through their debt, and to reward the Alumni/Community. The 2000s will likely be remembered as a decadent era of fraud founded on debt, but that's a conversation for another day. Don't look behind the curtain. Just consume, consume, consume. I don't want to sound all doom-and-gloom, I do after all love my Zips. I do think there is (or at least used to be) tangible social/community benefits to these programs, but I think it's wained over the past 2-decades because of greed. The formation of the FOX and ESPN mega-conferances has basically accelerated the death of the value college-athletics had to communities IMHO. It's going to generate billions for other people, from the socialized cost of the student's debt on the bottom. Something has to give...

There are actually very few schools where the football program "makes money", when you look at the whole pie. There are now 133 D-1 football teams and only a handful (less than 10) are considered "profitable" by any private-sector measure. Most schools receive some sore of subsidy from the student body in the form of a "Student Facilities Fee" or "Student Activity Fee" or something, that is what pays for Rec Centers and Sports and that sort of thing. Usually the overwhelming % of that is athletics support, like we're talking 90%. I dug through the UA financials about a decade ago, and the student body was subsidizing the athletics programs at about $400 per semester per student, which means $3,200 over 4-years per student. I can only imagine that the "fee" has gone up since I looked at the numbers. Now Football will claim it also brings in the most money ... but it also costs the most money, so it's all a shell game.

Seriously? WTF was that?
-
That's exactly the reason why you can blame him. He gutted this team into D-3 status, how on Earth can we expect a team to start to compete when it's relying on portal players because the previous dude couldn't even make a full roster of D-3 players...
-
I'm going to be honest here: How on Earth can we adequately evaluate Moorehead when the team he was given was a D-III team at best? Folks, hiring and firing coaches is never going to solve the problems, it's 2023. That's never going to happen at a school like Akron. We're in it for the long haul with Moorehead, and he's better than the last guy we had here.

There's been 3 pass plays, and 16 Rushing plays...
-
One. There's been one pass the zips have had up to this point. Looking at the stats...the other pass was a PI.
-
So what's the deal with the Zips abandoning the pass? Is that because NIU is weak against the Run, or because they switched to Bullock? This season is so confusing to follow to the casual Zips fan...
-
Akron offense actually looks...good tonight?

Worst team in FBS D1 Football...
-
OMG...Akron is going to lose to Morgan freaking State....🤮
