Where's the "Akron Football Night?"
Dave in Green replied to Captain Kangaroo's topic in Akron Zips Football
Overall, UA sports taken as a whole are on an upward trajectory. Football has been the obvious lagger. I can be patient as long as I see signs that football is headed in the right direction. That will play out on the field this fall. This is not a make-or-break season in terms of my interest in Zips football. But it's getting darned close to it. My expectations are for a clear and obvious improvement on the field this season. The minimum standard should be that the Zips are not an embarassment in a generally weak football conference like the MAC. Longterm I'd at least like to see the Zips football team in the hunt for the MAC championship like the men's basketball team. -
Let's be cautious here. I understand that Rembielak once vacationed in Florida at the same time as Wistrcill, which may indicate that Rembielak is one of Wistrcill's old buddies and therefore unfit to coach at the DI level.

Potential College Football Scandal
Dave in Green replied to Dave in Green's topic in Off Topic, Smack & Jokes
Since details are now out in the daylight, we'll see if the NCAA thinks Auburn's escort program is common or excessive. Along with the ongoing NCAA investigation into Cam Newton and other Auburn issues, there are also many investigative reporters digging away down in Alabama. -
A great performance at MSG would definitely help put Zeke and the Zips on the national radar.

Potential College Football Scandal
Dave in Green replied to Dave in Green's topic in Off Topic, Smack & Jokes
Here's an interesting new wrinkle in the ongoing Auburn investigation, which many believe will uncover more dirt than at tOSU. A savvy investigative reporter dug deep into the Auburn official website, and found financial records showing that Auburn has paid tens of thousands of dollars to attractive coeds to act as escorts for football prospects. Auburn immediately removed the cited financial information from their website, but not before it was captured and exposed. The NCAA will no doubt find this of some interest. So maybe headaviatorrowdie will give a little better hint of what his birdie told him about the Zips and New York. Aside from the Preseason NIT and Madison Square Garden, there aren't too many basketball things to get excited about in New York. Or maybe his birdie got confused about the women's basketball team getting invited to the Preseason WNIT.

Preseason NIT? Would be awesome if the men's team was invited, as the women's team already has been to the Preseason WNIT.

Infocision named a top ten employee workplace
Dave in Green replied to Hilltopper's topic in Off Topic, Smack & Jokes
I know very little about InfoCision, other than the fact that I drive by their new facility in Green every day and have watched it transformed from a hardware store/building center into what looks like an upscale resort. They've just completed a beautifully landscaped veranda area alongside the building where the workers can come outside and sit at fancy tables with patio umbellas and enjoy a cold drink and bite of food, or just a conversation with other employees. So, yeah, it looks like a great place to work, and there appears to be no shortage of money. I'm not fond of the concept of scaring little old ladies into coughing up money, if, in fact, that's what they do to make the big bucks. -
We Zips fans have all been lusting after more athletic players, probably because we feel we've been so deprived compared with some of the teams that have run us into the ground. But athleticism alone won't get the job done. Individually, I hope there's a good balance of athleticism and skill. Collectively, I hope the pieces all fit together. It's going to take a healthy combination of athleticism, skill and good team chemistry for the Zips to get to the next level.

The 2012 Recruiting Thread
Dave in Green replied to Quickzips's topic in Akron Zips Basketball Recruiting
Just because, my butt! This is must-have chart. It shouldn't be buried in the middle of any one thread, but should be pinned by itself where it's easily accessible for reference. This will save hundreds of wasted posts over the years where people try to sum up what's shown here at a single glance. My only question is the way that Green, Harney and Treadwell are shown. I think it makes sense to use a consistent Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, Senior to reflect expected athletic eligibility. For redshirts like Green, I think it would read a little easier to use something like Freshman*, Sophomore*, etc., with * identified as redshirt in a table at the bottom of the chart. For players like Harney and Treadwell, I think it would also read a little easier if they were shown as Freshman**, Sophomore**, etc., with ** identified as academic exemption or some term like that in the table. Having a table with asterisks would also allow other comments for players with extenuating circumstances. Nice work! -
Ranking don't get me excited. I would get excited at the football team at least winning their division every year. A MAC Championship wouldn't be that bad either...maybe two in a row. Winning is the sign of progress. Rankings are something people who don't see all of the games hand out. More Winning = Higher Ranking

This forum would be no fun at all if everyone was munching on chill pills.

Yeah, I was a little too optimistic last season that Dakotah Euton's 3-point shooting was going to make up for the loss of Brett McKnight's offense when it appeared he would be gone for the whole season. That didn't work out so well other than to remind me of the lesson that potential is meaningless unless realized. While I believe the incoming replacements have the potential to be better players than the departing veterans, it's not guaranteed, so I'm not counting on it until they prove it on the court.

UA to begin corrosion degree program
Dave in Green replied to g-mann17's topic in General UA & Campus Discussion
Z.I.P., if you deal primarily with Air Force assets, then you aren't really seeing the worst case scenario. When you think in terms of $15 billion in annual corrosion damage, think particularly in terms of Navy assets that spend all their lives exposed to salt water and damp, salty air. Think of the cost of aircraft carriers (about $4.5 billion each) and all the aircraft they carry, plus the hundreds of other Navy ships. That represents hundreds of billions of dollars alone, not counting the Army, Air Force and Marine assets. Thinking in terms of the total value of all U.S. military assets, $15 billion is really not such a big number. A friend of mine who was an aircraft crew chief on a carrier said you wouldn't believe how insidious corrosion is on both the aircraft and ships. -
SI article on our former adversary

The deeper you dig, the worse the manure smells. -
Lots of good news here. The OOC SOS is starting to look like what a lot of us wanted to see in Zeke's junior and senior seasons. The academics of Tree and Harney are something for which many of us have had our fingers crossed for months. One key point is team confidence. It's a really good thing if the Zips believe they can grow into a Sweet 16 team by the end of the season. Outsiders may look at all the available facts and disagree with the Zips assessment of themselves as way too optimistic. But if the Zips truly believe they can be that good, and if they would be truly disappointed not to prove it, that's one heck of a motivation to go out there and seriously execute. I like the chances of a team that truly believes in themselves a lot better than a team that thinks they'd be lucky to get to 20 wins.

Akron September opponent's coach in hot water?
Dave in Green replied to Dr Z's topic in Off Topic, Smack & Jokes
Everyone? Everyone is breaking the rules to the same extent as Terrelle Pryor? Reality is that college football players are not that much different from the general population when it comes to following rules and regulations. Individuals have different standards of ethical conduct. No one is perfect. But that doesn't mean everyone is flawed to the same degree. Some individuals place a higher value than others on following rules and regulations that they are obligated to follow by virtue of giving their word to do so or by signing legally binding contracts. Others have lower standards and try to get away with as much cheating as they think they can without getting caught and punished. It's an insult to the many college football players with higher integrity to suggest that they're all cheaters at the level of Terrelle Pryor. -
Akron September opponent's coach in hot water?
Dave in Green replied to Dr Z's topic in Off Topic, Smack & Jokes
Everybody says that? Everybody? Well, alrighty then. I guess if everybody says it's OK to cheat the college football system to make a quick buck that it's also OK to rob a bank or something. Lots of easy money to be made by cheating, lying, stealing, etc. Makes you wonder why anyone bothers to obey any laws. Honest people are suckers, right? Isn't that what everybody says? -

Potential College Football Scandal

Auburn coach Gene Chizik's new contract allows him to be paid if there is an NCAA investigation into possible major rules violations, a departure from his previous deal. Auburn will pay Chizik even if there is an NCAA investigation -
Another take on what LeBron was saying in the post-championship game loss press conference: LeBron James backtracks from 'superior' comments
-
LeBron James, on the other hand, has been found guilty -- not of failing to win the first of the seven rings, but of not being as advertised. He not only wasn't better than Dwyane Wade, thus ruining the established pecking order, but failed even to meet the standards of the third, Chris Bosh. But that's yesterday's news. The future is what is fascinating now -- what James intends to do about it, and what the customer base will accept from him. James isn't a villain, not in the conventional sense. Villains know their role, and they know that under the right circumstances they can become heroes. But those who proclaim their invulnerability can't have scars and bruising. They can't back out of a challenge, and they can't lose after they've talked so brazenly of success. This isn't hubris, it is mega-hubris, and it has an excellent chance of being irredeemable hubris because, as we are coming to learn, James doesn't do humble. At least not comfortably. What will become of this self-anointed king with no crown?

Dave in Green replied to Dr Z's topic in Off Topic, Smack & Jokes
"I believe the great majority of people within college athletics ... want to see us follow the rules that are in place," he said. "If we don't like a rule, we have the opportunity through legislation to try to shape our future and what it does look like." Nice to see one AD speaking up for those fans who don't believe in the concept of eliminating rules breaking by simply eliminating rules. NCAA needs to call special convention to clean up its mess -
LeBron's season is over now, and still no championship. How gracefully did he handle this defeat in the post-game press conference? The Heat's sense of entitlement keeps them from championship
