found an article from ohio.com from last month. to paraphrase: Proenza said of UA you might as well consider it a new university & more changes to come: one or two new dorms each of the next few years more older buildings, i.e. Memorial Hall & Carroll Hall to be dorn down more parking Proenza says R.B. nearing the end of its natural life, UA is spending more on repairs than to build something new and PLANS are UNDERWAY to make it feasible $40 million Spicer Village along Exchange St...eventually blight removal east of rte. 8 and north of market st. being planned

Can't's website says it's on ESPN2, Akron's says ESPNU. I had thought it was ESPN2 which would have a "much larger" audience. Now I just searched the ESPN page and it shows it's on ESPNU. So if the crowd is small, not many people will know about it unless something happens that would make the highlight reel.

These guys are our rivals??? Funny how they tried to make fun of our close game with Buffalo on bbs. WOW They are rivals in hoops, volleyball and track. In football they are not...it's Miami and BGSU now.
-
I believe Can't could have a good football program if their board of directors wanted one. They are about to replace their men-only-sport-hating president, probably with someone similar, so Can't will remain mired in the muck. Buffalo seems to have some desire to improve so they should climb atop Can't on the MAC ladder for the long-term.

The faculty voted about 2 years ago to unionize and they are finally getting close to finalizing a contract with the admin. IIUC, they have tentatively agreed on the major issues with the rest to be recommended by an indepent arbitrator before a final vote. It's supposed to be finished by next month. We don't know exactly what agreements they have made, they're not publicly saying yet. Maybe the faculty have demanded increased pay/benefits pegged to the amount of spending on buildings, campus improvements and athletics, who knows? Our stadium funds are supposed to come from private sources and possibly state assistance so I don't see why it would depend on the faculty contract...it won't be coming out of their pockets.

http://www.buchtelite.com/2005/1025/news_04.shtml I still don't know exactly where this is situated in Medina County. We will also now have a business/technology park like every other major university...I wonder if there are any tenants already lined up.

We should merge the east and west divisions together and just have an 8-team playoff to decide the MACC. Then we wouldn't have to realign divisions if we add or delete member schools and the best 2 teams play for the title, regardless of who or where they are. The last 2 games of the season could be reserved for the playoff (which should add interest & attendance) and eliminatees can play each other in consolation games (or call it a season and focus on studies). Then all the other 1-A conferences could be jealous of our playoff system. There's probably already some NCAA rule against it though.

from what i saw on the bg board, their fans are starting to get negative on brandon. he's starting to have a problem on his hands and may not have a long term future at bg if he doesn't get things righted soon. i think bg is the team i love to beat the most in football now that they're back in the east and we did it at their place makes it even better. if jd can outrecruit them over the next few years this series will be a lot of fun. my hat's off to falconfreak tho since he lives near the RB and comes to our games sometimes. great to see biggs get some numbers. if our o-line was a little better he would have a lot of 100-yd games. getsy threw no INT's and only got sacked once. i only had gametracker but it was good to see us making some big plays on offense, probably because their D is so-so. great win, let's keep some momentum going now.

No! Zips will one day soon be head and shoulders above the rest

Who should be the QB for the rest of '05?
UA Fan replied to InTheZone's topic in Akron Zips Football
``There is no question on (Luke) being the starter, but we are going to give John more reps so he is prepared,'' Brookhart said. ``We have not done a lot of that. ``We anticipate Luke to be better, but we will be more prepared if he is not.'' We have not done a lot of that? (preparing the backup QB) What has JF been doing in practice, assisting the water boy? What if LG gets hurt or something. We need to be preparing everybody to play. I thought everybody took reps in practice, not just 1st string. -
Maybe LG has been promised the job for the entire season and next season as well. John F. should transfer out if he's not being given a fair chance to play. If I were a potential Akron recruit reading this I would think twice about coming here. Maybe JFerg is staying because he's been promised to start his Sr. season in '07 after LG is gone. Carlton could play WR for a couple years before he's promise-eligible to be QB in '08. Seriously, I don't think JD is playing for a MAC title this year or next so he's going to be very patient with LG who he coached at Pitt and who paid his own way here at Akron last year in order to transfer. A QB controversy is the last thing this young team needs. Just try to go 2-2 over the last 4 games and next fall we'll have a couple of promising RS freshmen QB's challenging the upperclassmen.

We still don't have the defense to win the division. The CMU & Miami games quickly put us behind the 8 ball in the conference. We're still in a developmental mode so IMO there is no need to start a QB derby or platooning situation. I think JD wants to develop confidence & show faith in the upcoming young players & so is avoiding benching people. Ferguson hasn't won the job in practice so for now he's the backup. Next year C. Jackson and maybe J. Arthur will be in the mix and the best man will be our QB with hopefully some more talent on the field. I'll consider 2005 a success if JD turns in another top recruiting class come Feb.

OSU lowered their field and built permanent endzone stands but they didn't replace all the old concrete in the stadium which is older than the RB...does that mean Ohio Stadium is about to collapse? If the RB seats are getting busted up that's a different issue but doesn't mean we can't get a few more years of use out of it...we have to. We may have light poles in the way but the Shoe had seats where you couldn't see the other end of the field, let alone the scoreboard.

There was no need to buy land for the stadium itself, it was already UA property. The VP of Planning has already said it will be built next to the fieldhouse which is currently UA student housing and parking lots. Yet the article makes it sound like they don't have a clue about location or funding even 2 years after starting the feasibility study. Maybe MT was doing less than we thought as AD I don't buy it, I agree they're keeping it down low with the ABJ for now. Getting state funding for a stadium by including dorms or classrooms is probably pretty delicate politically (although OSU apparently did it?). Plusquellic knows it would be good for UA and in turn for the city so you know he's interested but I doubt if using city taxpayer money is an option so I don't know how he would get UA to move the site downtown. State lawmakers are also protective of existing concert venues by preventing new ones from opening in the same area. Fink said sonograms of the RB concrete looked good. It will last until the new stadium is built. There are stadiums older than the RB still in use...look no further than columbus.

We can't compete with the cash UC can offer, or the Big East Conference. We just have to find a way to reload. You like to think that, with all the positive progress that been made over the past 5 years, and with what's planned for the next several years, that the Akron AD's position should draw a good talent pool. If we could hire a Mike Thomas 5 years ago with where we were at then, we should be able to get someone of equal caliber (I used that word for zipsrifle) being further along now. Somebody will want to be doing the groundbreaking and ribbon-cutting for the new stadium and get the backslaps for the MAC titles which will in turn propel them into a higher profile job. A major aspect of the job now is fundraising, corporate sponsorship, marketing, and facilities development...it's not just about hiring/firing coaches anymore. Proenza will hire the right person. I'm more concerned about finding a replacement for L.P. when that time comes. Also, realize that UC came to AKRON for their AD, not Miami, OU, BG, Toledo and especially not Can't. Yes, UC has more money and a big-time hoops conference and assuming MT makes the right BB HC hire there and gets their football program on track he will probably end up in the ACC or Big10. Good luck to us all.

Those who were at the game... How many times did they use it? Was it at appropriate rally-the-crowd moments? Did the crowd respond (positively?)

Missed the game but a few things stand out from the box score: The Getsy pickoffs predicted by NIU did not materialize. We needed to take care of the ball to win this one. Good job. Good news: We shut down their vaunted running game. Bad news: they lit us up passing and we never sacked their QB. If we were stacking the line, give Novak credit for going airborne and not being stubborn. Give J.D. credit for taking away their strength and (gulp) trusting our secondary. Punting appears to be getting better and our special teams allowed very few return yards. For all his athletic talent, Jabari is the invisible man and BB appears to be the better receiver. But maybe JA is making a lot of crucial blocks that I'm not aware of. Now we get to see how well we can focus on CMU after the big win. Go Zips !

OSU plays at noon and will be done by 3:30. Zips game is at 6:00. There is no time conflict. Go to the Rubber Bowl to tailgate and see a good game.

I didn't see too much of the game but saw D.S. make a hard-hitting tackle and the announcers were talking him up a bit as being a hard hitter and how the Saints were happy to be able to get him for their team. I coulda swore he talked about going to a team that wanted him as a CB but looks like he ended up back at FS.

Very cool to read about a Zips victory on Princeton's website: http://goprincetontigers.collegesports.com.../091805aaa.html

I'd like to echo that. The MT posters in here were confident but not overly cocky and seemed hospitable to Akron fans coming to the game. And I appreciated being able to listen to your radio feed on the internet...you've got us beat on that feature and your announcers are very listenable for opposing fans (much better than Purdue). Good luck the rest of the season.
