http://www.ohio.com/mld/ohio/living/14663071.htmThis was the ABJ article that came to my email (I have a Google newsalert set for "university of akron") which was the first I knew of CH closing. But I am also out of the area and may have missed earlier articles or posts. I would think APS could sell it for mucho pesos to UA, find some temp-space elsewhere and pocket the difference. I'm sure the U would borrow, tap the endowment, or whatever they had to do to acquire the property as it would also give them some extra space while they continue renovating/eliminating other old campus buildings. Anyone up for Western Civ at Central-Hower Hall?

ABJ says it will still be used as extra space for APS for a few years.

excellent info. I didn't realize he was playing in pro leagues all those years and even won some championships. It's also cool that now he's passing on his knowledge to the next generation and making a living at something he enjoys.

DH was the 17th WR picked. Not bad considering most all of the 115+ 1A teams have at least one graduating WR. He will prove himself worthy of the 4th round pick.

very cool info. the more akron can develop itself, the more it will attract new business and feed the cycle. it all takes a lot of time, effort and $$.

What would really do wonders for the marching band would be to have a nice sports bands endowment and pay a scholarship/stipend to the band members and majorettes. Award a couple of full rides to the most outstanding members and we could attract a lot of good student musicians/marchers like (cough, cough) OU.Theme from Rocky would be good for pregame or the 2 Live Crew thing...some good old stadium rock. If you keep trying different material something may catch on and become a theme / rally song like Hang On Sloopy did at tOSU. And/or commission a composer to create another Zips song to go along with Blue & Gold.I hope when we get the new stadium on campus the band will march up across Buchtel Mall from Guzetta, shortly before pregame, playing some kind of cool theme song or even just a rockin drum cadence...there's nothing better to stoke the crowd than the anticipation of hearing the drums beating in the distance and getting louder as the band approaches the stadium.

*Linebacker Chase Blackburn, who was carted off the field in Washington on Dec. 24 and missed the season’s final two games (including the playoffs) with a neck injury, said he is fully recovered. “There are no lasting effects,†Blackburn said. “I feel real good. I have full movement, full range. The first hit, maybe I’ll be a little wary of. But once I get it and nothing comes back, it’s full go again.†Blackburn has taken steps to ensure he doesn’t suffer a similar injury. “I have a little thicker neck,†he said. “I put an inch on my neck by working on it every day. That was my whole rehab, strengthening my neck. Once it healed I put a little thickness on it to make sure it couldn’t move as far.â€

BRIEFS: LB Reggie Torbor said the Giants will add linebackers via free agency and/or the draft because, "There are only four of us." Torbor, Antonio Pierce and Carlos Emmons are the proposed starters with Chase Blackburn -- who has been given 100 percent clearance from last Christmas Eve's season-ending neck injury -- the lone reserve with any experience. Blackburn added an inch to his neck size while rehabbing.

We used to have a lot more than the $158M. UA invested aggressively in the tech boom of the late 90's and made a lot of money but lost it when the bubble burst in 2000. Of course everybody lost money but it's especially bad for a school or non-profit who depends on contributions and then their money managers take a hit like that. I never heard any kind of statement from the administration about that whole episode & I think it's lost them a lot of trust, unfortunately.

Campus Improvements, part...6,129b
UA Fan replied to urbanpreppie05's topic in General UA & Campus Discussion
I totally agree but it gets political when you talk about tearing down still-functional buildings to replace them using taxpayers money. I've always wondered why they couldn't just stucco over the ugly brick or somehow refinish the exteriors for a modest price. The major impetus behind all the campus improvements is to attract more/better students but we need to address the eyesores as well as building new stuff. If I had a nice chunk of change to donate I would earmark it for that purpose above all else. -

That's the one I'm waiting for. If they keep that spot open you would be able to stand there and see a panorama of LJF including the new practice and softball fields, the new Student Union, Buchtel Hall & statue, the new honors dorm, Arts & Sciences building, Memorial Hall (can't win em all), JAR arena, Student Wellness Center & Field House... and... soon... the new football stadium. Hmm, now that I think about it, maybe they could put some kind of an observation platform there. Or a bell tower/carillon. Or a reflecting pool. -
At the risk of sounding ridiculously rose-colored.....I'll take it. An 11-point loss with our C game (at best) on an MVC floor with 10,000 in the stands against a team many feel deserved a bid to the NCAA.It's been a hell of a season. Hell of a good season. And after the big OT win 2 nights ago on the road at Temple...oh well, congrats Jays and good luck. But it was fun "watching" the game on zipsnation. I wish someone could report live during the spring football game(s). Way to go Zippers. Let's make LeBron's place our 2nd home. Toledo's season ends tomorrow !P.S. I wonder what King J. will do with his income tax refund this year?

The Zips have not yet shown that they can win big MAC tourney games and lately they have not shown they can beat a tough opponent away from the JAR. They certainly have the potential and I certainly hope they will fulfill it but they're going to have to go up there and execute and get 'er done. Whether they can do that is the biggest question.

Here's another link to the same article:http://www.iht.com/articles/2006/02/20/news/blimp.php

It looked good. It didn't look "big-time", of course, but 20+ years on it's still a nice clean bright place to watch some hoops. Having a full house looked good on TV too. I saw one outside shot looking west toward the student center with 1 or 2 of the rec center arches in vew. Obviously they just stepped outside the JAR for that one. Was great to be able to see a televised game. We need some more of those.

Whu?? You mean that little park area north of campus next to Central Hower? What means "torn down"? We should acquire & redevelop the blighted structures near campus but maybe leave the parks as is?!
-
Yeah, I mean, growing up I had no connections to any MAC schools and no inkling that I would go to one. The Buckeyes were the Ohio school that was on the radio and TV and which everyone around me rooted for. I also had relatives that attended. As I was coming through H.S. though I didn't see me going into that behemoth campus atmosphere and started out at a small college instead before transferring to Akron. I'm not a tOSU fan per se but I still prefer to see them beat Michigan or compete for a nat'l championship, as opposed to a Miami or UCLA, etc. Yes, their bandwagon fans are legion but it's no different than any other "big school". Most of their fans never went to college and basically view them as a home state 'professional' franchise. They're not a direct competitor with Akron (except we have to schedule football games around them) so I don't have the deep hatred for them that some MACsters do. Sure would be nice to pull the upset in 07 though.

What was the jist of this article for those of us NYT non-registrants...please?

That's funny, to me French and Dunn are unique and seem like the anti-bigtime announcers. When I listen to opposing team broadcasts the announcers always sound alike, like 58-year-old clones of each other. And it's exactly because Steve & Joe have been there through all the lean years that I would have a hard time giving them the bum-rush out of the program before they get to enjoy some more success. I agree with working on the radio reach first.
