  1. I saw a suggestion about moving the Paterno statue in front of his Library to remind people to keep quiet at all times. Ouch.
  2. I just signed on - also going to run over to the Virgin Islands the next couple of days following the tournament. I signed on by myself but would not be opposed to sharing a room if someone else is going as a single and wants to save a little cash. Preference given to attractive, single females first. ;-) Originally I thought my son would be able to join me but he probably can only join me for the Virgin Islands portion.
  3. I know lots of Penn State graduates and they are really hurting right now. Here was a piece written by an ESPN employee for CNN by a Penn State graduate that sums up some of those feelings. Here is a little telling excerpt: "And weeks ago when my son received his very first college acceptance letter from my alma mater, Penn State -- a moment I thought would be one of the pinnacles in my life -- we both tossed the letter aside and prayed that he'd get accepted into a "better school." (Our prayers were answered.)"
  4. George, ignore the whining minority, most of us love what you and the BJ are doing for Zips sports right now. Interviews with recruits now? Heck, before we were happy to get an occasional interview with the head coach. Love what you're doing. Keep it up.
  5. After going back and looking at this one again after seeing George's second interview with the new QB, I remembered also being impressed by this: "The facilities are top-notch,” said Guiser, a 6-foot defensive back who intercepted 16 passes at Greensburg Central Catholic during his career. “They really don’t get any better than Akron. The campus is gorgeous.” For those of us that remember the campus as just a bunch of large concrete blocks dropped in the middle of the city, bisected by the four lane Buchtel Avenue, this is truly amazing. We had Proenza's vision to remake the campus and now we finally appear to have the right architect to have some football success, you have to be excited about the direction things are going.
  6. I think we have a new contender for the title.
  7. I believe Csonka (the article got his name wrong) wrestled for Stow High School. And I'd never want to face even a high school aged Ray Lewis on the mat.
  8. I was surprised too. I thought George was interviewing you.
  9. With an 8-1 loss, I'd say in conjunction.
  10. My son just retweeted this. Cracked me up. Needed to be posted now in case Miami wins the series - LeBron would like to remind everyone, when he said, "Not two, not three, not four..." he never said "Not Zero"
  11. Pretty funny quote from the article - "Since Shawn knows our game from his playing experience in Saskatchewan last year, combined with having a passport, he was an ideal addition on short notice". Apparently I was only missing game expereince with Saskatchewan or I could have been on the radar. I meet requirement two already.
  12. A new arena is definitely in the next UA Master Plan. One Sasaki suggestion of supreme importance to the sports community would be to build a new basketball arena, as many view the existing James A. Rhodes Arena as outdated and inadequate. Options for arena Sasaki pinpoints two options. One site is on UA land at the corner of Spicer and Exchange streets, next to InfoCision Stadium. Or UA could partner with the city of Akron to attract funding to build a new arena across from Canal Park where the Akron Aeros play minor-league baseball. Sasaki does not indicate which of the two sites it prefers, and Curtis has a third idea of his own. He suggests attaching a new arena with 7,000 seats to the Rhodes Arena and converting the existing space into two practice gyms. “Having a totally new facility is even more exciting, and whether it’s on Spicer Street or downtown, a new arena is a new arena,” Curtis said. “I could go for any of the three solutions.”
  13. I have to acknowledge what the Can't baseball team has done (yes I know it is in another thread but I included it here for a reason), it is pretty impressive for a MAC school to make this kind of run (and just about as nationally unlikely as the Zips soccer run), but being our rivals, here's a little synopsis for Public Universities with the worst graduation rates including Can't State Branch campus. Also here. And for good measure here's one for OU and one more.
  14. Delete this too.
  15. Serious problems with Quick edit here. Delete this one.
  16. Not trying to rekindle the debate over the value that Lebron brings to UA, but here is an ESPN Rick Reilly article on LeBron and Kevin Durant that once again mentions UA. And for you purists, he gets the name right. "They are closer than you think. Both dumped by Dallas in last season's playoffs, they commiserated during the lockout with a two-man, four-day "Hell Week" as James called it, at the University of Akron -- lifting, shooting, and swimming. James saw Durant's drive up close and knew he'd probably have to go through him to get a title. Now, here they are, in Hell Fortnight".
  17. Not trying to make any sort of political statement but pretty cool to see Chase representing the Giants beside the president.
  18. And look at Darren, I think I know why he might not have hung around any longer considering he already had an NCAA championship under his belt. Strikers are apparently the quarterbacks of the MLS pay scales.
  19. Ah I knew what he meant, but in case everyone hated the idea, I was fine with letting you take the blame. By the way, my idea would not eliminate multiple overtimes, just the PK finish. I'm also fine with regular season games ending in a tie. And finally, what kind of bizarre softball leagues do you play in ... ?
  20. I have long advocated a system where you remove players from the field (therefore opening more space) for each successive overtime, including removing the goalies at say, the third overtime. First overtime, nine players, second, seven, and the third five (goalies are gone). Keep going with five until it is decided (addtional overtimes past three would allow substitutions at the beginning of the overtime but not during). Penalty kicks can be dramatic, but they really shouldn't be the way to decide a well played match.
  21. Pete Milich, would have loved to have seen him play, but his glory days were the very early sixties. Any guy that scores a goal in sixteen consecutive games has got to be worth watching. He also still holds the Zips record for goals in a career (85). This was in the very early days of Akron soccer and got the Zips off on the right foot (pun intended).
  22. Especially when they list Reggie McAdams as a football recruit.
  23. This was the winner. While I think it is clever, it took me while to really grasp it which I don't think is good for a T-shirt. At first I thought it might be a chemical symbol with the subscripts like F2O2 (fluorine dixoide? - chemistry was my weakest subject), but I realized it is supposed to stand for 20/20 vision. Unfortunately, I think it may have another more prophetic message, as the year 2020 could be the time the vision finally comes into focus. C'mon, Coach Bowden I hope you're "near sighted".
