I'm calling it. News Collector is now 75 ahead with a pace of 6 posts per day compared with ZTZ's 4 per day. It was a valiant fight, but it's over. Time of Death 2/11/2011 1:00 PM.

And just maybe he did the right thing by going to Miami, given the current state of the Cavaliers without him (or did Shaq and Z make that much difference?). If I was at a job where I consistenly outshined everyone else and I saw the ceiling of the company was as far as it was going to go, I'd probably leave too. I realize he is still a very polarizing figure, and how he left was probably still more hurtful than the fact that he did. I also realize he said his goal was to win a championship in Cleveland and he wasn't going to stop until he did but don't you think every athlete would say that? Would it have been better if he had said "I won't stop until we win or say, four more years passes?" Would that have helped? I don't want him to win a championship in Miami either, but time will pass, this too will heal and his association with his hometown will be a good thing.

I wish I could count the number of times I've said that I was sure a coach wouldn't leave his current post. For most coaches I will absolutely agree with you, but Porter is absolutely not your average coach. The man definitely marches to the beat of his own drummer (with the AK-Rowdies cheering in the background) so I would be stunned if he takes the UNC job. As a matter of fact I will send you $50 for a psuedo-nice dinner if Caleb is anyone else's head coach next fall. And to cut RootforRoo's disappointment in half for now, Docking is doing a heck of a job at Coastal Carolina, I just don't think he's done it for long enough to be a proven commodity which would be my guess what UNC is going to look for. We sort of had to take a chance an uproven coach when Porter was hired (thank God we did), UNC does not (and at this point we might not either when we need a new one - hopefully a long time from now). I think Docking will get a look in a year or two from some bigger programs because I expect he will continue his success, just not someone on the level of UNC yet. By the way, I saw a note on a Creighton message board saying it is the only sport in which they could conceivably win a National title. Maybe we have some more common ground for Bracketbusters? Who'd have thought we'd be the "haves"?

I'm really interested to see the fall schedule. Just wonder if we can get an ACC or Big East school or two to come visit Lee Jackson this year?
-
Granted, but do you want to rely on that happening every game? As has been stated on this board a bunch of times, even if you are having an off night offensively, defense can keep you in the game. I was just pointing out that after what appeared to be a very good defensive first half (28 points), that was a lot to give up in the second.
-
Congrats to Brett for hitting the 1,000 point mark tonight (what is that now, four of the last five years we've had a player do that? - last year no one did although Chris McKnight was pretty close). Nice game by the Zips tonight, althoiugh they did give up 43 in the second half.
-
Excelllent job by the Zips in the first half. Cvetinovic has been playing really well over the last few games, including tonight.
-
It will but he's not going anywhere. I'm a little shocked that Bolowich left for Creighton (/sarcasm font - a fine school but they're no vaunted ACC school /end sarcasm font).

Nagbe scores in first Timbers exhibition

I thought you added the naturally part yourself. I was surprised to see it was actually in the article. That's pretty funny. -
What the announcer probably said was that they were the only conference outside of the big six to win a game in every NCAA tournament in the last six years. UW-Milwaukee (with Bruce Pearl as coach) in 2005 and 2006, Cleveland St in 2009 and Butler in 2007,2008 and 2010.

"Parks and Recreation" had a line tonight where one of their old town slogans was "Pawnee - the Akron of southwest Indiana".

I assume everyone knows the Egypt match was canceled, but in case not I thought I'd post it.

Peter King (SI) and Gregg Easterbrook (ESPN) have both touched on this topic before. They have opined that the "less-privileged" players have a chip on the shoulder and something to prove while the folks who have had it a little easier and sometimes assume that just talent will get them by get surpassed by the guys who go all out every play. Might explain some of this.

THREE Part Series on Zip Soccer!
MDZip replied to johnnyzip84's topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
haha They really are interested in the Zips though. For ASN, 5% of my hits last month came from that area of the country (Virginia, DC, Maryland). At first I didn't realize why. Probably most of that was me. I thought you were a physician. I now see that you are a Zip residing in Maryland. Imagine my chagrin. I'm not a doctor, but I play one on this board. -

THREE Part Series on Zip Soccer!

It seems DC United fans have taken a vested interest in the Zips, they also have an article on their site about what would happen if the 2010 Zips played the 2010 United. Funniest comment from the article: Halftime: In the locker room at the half, the president of the University of Akron extends Caleb Porter’s contract another five years, to the year 2068. -
THREE Part Series on Zip Soccer!

Nice find JohnnyZ. Here is the part you have to absolutely love. A soccer "factory" that actually produces real student-athletes. How much better can this get? While the easy conclusion might lead you to believe that Akron is little more than a pro-soccer player factory, the reality seems to be far more nuanced. Akron head coach Caleb Porter is undoubtedly creating professional athletes, but he's doing it in a way that belies the conventional image of what that means. His teams are regularly among the nation's academic leaders. In 2009-10 they posted a team GPA of 3.33, eighth best in the country, and the semester the Zips won the 2010 College Cup they posted a 3.51 team GPA. In Porter's five years at Akron, seven Zips have been named Academic All-America and 16 have been named Academic All-Conference. -
I think this is punishment for all the guys who left early. No Spain for you! This will teach them to go pro when they're ready and not hang around for another year. (No tongue in cheek icon).
-
To be fair, this is more like playing against Ramiro Pena, Brett Gardner and Alfredo Aceves (Yankees bench players) but regardless it's still pretty cool. How Caleb Porter cotinues to pull this stuff off amazes me.

Bunbury to play for usa over canada
MDZip replied to gozips19's topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
Apparently, not everyone was excited over Teal playing for the US. I'm assuming this site originates in Canada. -
Don't believe there is any "think" about it. I will be surprised if any MAC team gets a premier matchup.
