It is frustrating because we were so close. But if we do win the next two (and hey they are both on the road against losing teams), we end at 7-5. That's not a bad finish and with the big conferences looking to be having trouble filling their bowl slots, at 7-5 there is a very good chance we could go because 7-5 teams have to go before non-bowl affiliated 6-6 teams. Its not over yet, even though the odds of winning the East are very, very, small now.

Neither was Dru. I think we need at least a half dozen games under our belts before we can start making any realistic assessment, especially with as young as this team is.

In 2005, we were the number one ranked team in the country for a while and I think we finished around #4. When the seeds came out, we were #9 which meant we got an opening round game at home (I belive it was WVU), but then the next round we were on the road against #8 Connecticut. After that win we went on the road to #1 Maryland (outstanding game, I went to it), but a disappointing loss. Anyway, if you are seed 9-16, you get one home game, if you are 5-8 you get two if you win the first round, and 1-4 could get up to three - and then next step is the College Cup. I also believe that if a higher seed gets upset, the highest remaining seed gets the home game. And there are no regional seeds, just 1-16. That is how I remember it.

I wonder if GameChnger54 will be changing the Screen Name to GameChngr44 soon? Is Zeke still #54 for his upcoming season or has he swapped already? I think its great how they're so proud of their son and come on and share with us. We're proud that he chose to join in our tradition as well (of course I mean the Computer Science Department, I suspect he will be our tallest computer science graduate ever). I keep hearing that he plays some sort of sport as well. Glad to hear that but also glad to see that he really did make a choice based on academic reasons as well. Those are the kind of student-athletes (in the truest sense of the word) that you want at your school. Go Zeke!

Its all right theere, it really couldn't be set up any better for the team that was picked to finish last in the East to win it all. The toughest and most critical game of the year pitting two very evenly matched teams is at home and the final two games are against some pretty bad teams. Its so ripe for the taking. I say the home field advantange, emotion of the final game at the RB starts to carry over for the opening of Infocision. A MAC East title is in our grasp. I think Turner Gill is a class act, but his final visit to the RB will be a disappointment. Zips 35-31!

Student incentive for attending the game thursday
MDZip replied to bUAkronG's topic in Akron Zips Football
oh god, let's not get started on the bus situation. Last week they somehow thought that it would be appropriate to use 4 buses to take students to the game and only 2 to bring students home. Many were left for almost an hour after the game. However the bus issue should not be a problem this game. Apparently it has been addressed. That was horrible. It was like a stampede of bulls trying to squeeze into a small charter bus door.I hope it was adressed, ha.Hopefully we see the real thing this week, with the actual Bulls desperately wanting to get on their bus and out of town after suffering a beatdown. -
And Gates shouldn't count - when they didn't even know they had one of the best players in the game right under their nose, that should count as -1 so they only get 5.

I know, I know the whole 7 Akron Zips in the NFL really has to embarrass a team like UB with two... If you're going to try to talk trash maybe, just maybe, it should not be in an area that we both stink ok...You know, if the score is the same tomorrow, I'll take it. One touchdown for us, one safety for you, I'll be fine with that.

Super Tuesday .. er .. Wednesday
MDZip replied to Zip Watcher's topic in Akron Zips Basketball Recruiting
I think this Eric Bossi guy knows what he's talking about. -
that's what we are doing though, getting in the way of the big boys who have fans that wont come to ours or OU's games. I for one dont care, ill be down there already friday night and 3:30pm is better than noon, so i can still recover from that night before . I understand what we are doing I just don't understand why we openly admit to it and promote the idea that we are second rateIts at Ohio, the Zips have very little to do with the start time.

Did you all see who made the game saving tackle on fourth down for the Giants against the Eagles last night - Chase Blackburn, heck of a play.

If I remember correctly almost every win under Huggins was tough, especially the years we had few scholarships and Huggy raided the football team. Bob Huggins was a fantastic coach who got the most out of his players. With no disrespect to KD, but for my money Huggins was the best coach the Zips ever had in basketball, and the University "done him wrong".I've heard several version of what happened with Coach Huggins (football team took precedence, he wasn't treated with enough respect ..). I don't know what really happened, but if you look at what reputation followed him around his travels (not graduating palyers, his ugly dismissal at Cinci, his K-State abandonment after they took a chance on him), I'm more than happy to have Coach Dambrot and what he has brought to the program. Not only are we winning but it seems we're doing it the right way. Smart guys like Zeke can also see that and that might help to draw more smart recruits like that to Akron.

I started this in another thread (the "Why are you a Zips fan?" thread), but it would interesting to me to see how much of the country Zips fandom has spread to. So if you live in any state but Ohio, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Georgia, Alaska or Hawaii (we know we already have those covered), please respond here so we can see just how widespread the fan base really is.
-
After the last post, I wonder how close we'd come to representing all 50 states. UAZips is in Alaska, we know Z.I.P. has Hawaii covered, BigGuyinGA has Georgia covered, I have Maryland and I think Ohio is represented. How may other states do we have board members in rooting for the Zips (PB1719 is serving overeas). Is there a way we could set it up to see? A poll doesn't have enough choices or I would have tried that.

After we beat Buffalo if we happen to end up tied with them and only them for first, we go to the MACC. Period. No other tie breaker scenario enters into it. Thursday's game is about as close as you get to an elimination game. Good that's it's here and on an historic night (just wish it could have been an historic Saturday). -
Quote from the article "Kennedy's support for a team that hasn't been a consistent winner since the 1970s is just as solid. He has brought in former Can't State coaches to give opinions on ways to make improvements and has implemented many of their recommendations".So they are getting advice from all of the coaches who couldn't win over the last 30 years - well, there's your problem, right there!

This is a very good year for the MAC but I don't think it compares with 2003, when the MAC knocked off five ranked teams in a year (and three in one weekend). Marshall took out #6 K-State, Toledo beat #9 Pitt, Bowling Green beat #16 Purdue and Northern Illinois beat both #21 Alabama and #14 Maryland. Miami and Bowling Green were ranked at the end of the season and we were 7-5 and there were five teams that were better than us (only BG and Miami went to Bowl games). That was probably the MAC's best year ever. The conference as a whole might be better this year but most of the BCS scalps have been against some of the lesser teams, the only "ranked" team was Bowling Green over Pitt. Of course that will happen again when we take out Ball St. in the MACC. If we do meet Ball St. in the MACC, I think we need to offer up a challenge to David Letterman.
-
Absolutely, if we end up tied with Buffalo (but not another team as well) for first and we beat them next Thursday, we go to the MACC. Next Thursday is huge.

This is sort of like a confessional. I admit Akron was far from my first choice as a school when I went there. I'd done very well and could have been accepted a lot of places (and was), but no one could quite give up enough scholarship money to make it affordable to attend there since I paid for every dime on my own. Akron gave me enough to actually come out of school WITH money. Anyway, I regarded it as sort of Hilltop High, it certainly suffered from "localism" in my eyes, so I wasn't that excited to attend. After moving away (not a lot of jobs in Ohio in the mid-eighties) and really not paying much attention to what was going on there, I eventually realized what a great school it really was. I ended up working at a job where I worked with tons of people from "name" schools, and I used to gleefully point out that even with all the money they paid, we were working at the same job working in the same place. No one had ever heard of Akron then (I used to claim we were the largest unknown university in the United States), but eventually it was sort of like being "embarrassed" by your parents, until you realized just how terrific they really were. So I started really following the teams again around the time we joined the MAC (I thought that was a great move at the time, still do) and it was kind of like a badge of honor rooting for the little school (your school) that could. And the more I saw about the changes at the school, the more I fell in love with it. So it was a combination of having attended, seeing all the great things that were happening and believing that it was a school on the rise (the first year I attended it was still a Division II school, now that we're Division I and have had a little success, people at work here on the East Coast actually know who we are and bring us up when we do well). I might not have been initially, but now I'm really proud to say I'm a Zip. Thank you, Father.

Assistant Coaches (so why is Can't so bad?)Each of these teams in the AP poll is coached by a former Can't State assistant -- Bob Stoops (Oklahoma), Nick Saban (Alabama) and Gary Pinkel (Missouri).

MDZip replied to johnnyzip84's topic in Akron Zips Football
The Independence Bowl is supposed to be SEC vs. Big XII - how disappointed would those sponsors be to get the MAC vs. the Sun Belt? (Other than getting to host the Zips of course ). You have to give the site some credit though, they did some serious work on every team. They have us at 7-5 but not making the MACC, they have BG tying us so that they go and then lose to Ball State. That's actually some pretty in-depth work. I'm just so excited to even be able to discuss this right now. From a season that looked to be going nowhere to a possible bowl bid? How cool is that for the timimg right before opening Infocision. This is the part I hate most about being an out of towner and not being able to really be a part (especially on a Thursday night - grrrr), but if the Zips go bowling, I'm there and I will be there next September 19th! -
And if you mouse over the picture next to it, it says "Rubber Bowl". Looks likes an amazing place, I'd like to see it. It looks closer to the Polymer Science building than the Rubber Bowl - does the Polymer Science building seat 70,000?
-
This actually could be a year in which the MAC could pick up a few extra bowl bids. I did a little fun analysis on the conference tie-ins and likely bowl participants. I counted all of the conference tie-ins to both the BCS games and others. I came up with the following totals (there are a few things that throw it off like a Big 12/Big East/ND all in one bowl in a few places, a non-BCS school (or two) making a BCS bowl, Notre Dame and Navy by themselves), but in general looking at the current standings here is what I see (also remember that 6-6 teams are not automatically in, 7-5 teams have to go first):I took conferences that have a few 4-4 and 4-5 teams and gave them one extra place but not more than that.Conference Bowls Eligibile_teams (projected solely by me )ACC - 9 - I think they get all ninePAC-10 - 7 - I think they get only 6SEC - 9 - I think 8Big 12 - 9 - I think 8Big Ten - 9 - Only 7 and this is pretty real, the 8th and 9th (Indiana and Purdue) are 3-6 and so will be at the bottom of the heap even if one wins 3 straight games and they both can't because they play each otherBig East - 6, I think they get them allMAC - 3 - already have three eligible and can get to five easily and probably 6 (the winner of us and Buffalo is bowl eligible - pretty amazing)WAC - 3 - probably will have 4 eligible, maybe 5MWC - 4 - probably just get the 4C-USA - 6 - may only get 4Sun Belt - 1 - probably have 2A few teams will sneak in at 6-6 that I haven't accounted for but at the moment, it looks like there could be up to five openings, so there is a chance for a lot of MAC teams if we can just pull it off (c'mon lower MAC teams do it for the good of the conference ).Of course you also have to worry about not playing your own conference and its likely the three bowls we have against the Big 10, C-USA and Big East, two of them will be a problem because the B-10 and C-USA will have trouble filling them so we can't get those.Other random observations:The Zips own the only two victories over the MAC West by the MAC East at this point. Thanks goodness for the scheduling gods there. Buffalo drew Central and Western. We scored 47 points against a team that held Michigan to 10.How great is it that we finish off the Rubber Bowl with a game that really means something and lucky we got this game at home!Do you think Andre Jones will go to class this week? :)Here's to bowl eligibility, a MAC championship and a really cool bowl game.
