  1. Yep I think Keene is out of the running for POY.
  2. Chad Barson knocking away that Louisville goal attempt in front of an otherwise empty net may be my favorite Zips sports memory of all time. Hope he catches on with someone.
  3. I've been playing with the MAC playoff simulator a bit and if we'd like to see Buffalo, Ohio and Kent all on the opposite side of the bracket its seems like there are four key games, need Buffalo to win at Ohio, the Zips to beat Kent and Ball State to win both of theirs. That's the easiest looking path, but the first two look critical.
  4. Miami RedHawks (10-19, 3-13 MAC) at Akron Zips (23-6, 13-3 MAC) Tuesday, February 28 • James A. Rhodes Arena TV/Video: WatchESPN/ESPN3 - Live Stats: GoZips.com/Schedule - Live Stats Radio: Akron-IMG Sports Network - Steve French (PxP) and Joe Dunn (Analyst) WARF 1350 AM (flagship), iHeart Radio, TuneIn.com/Akron Zips All-Time Series Zips lead 29-28 With the MAC Championship and #1 seed locked up do the Zips have anything to play for? Plenty, need to go storming into the MACC not meekly limping in.
  5. I can't find a clip but Sportscenter showed a moment during an Ohio State game where Dan Dakich was an announcer and he talked about how much he hated mascots and specifically called out Zippy for annoying him once during an Akron-BGSU game. Go Zippy! :-)
  6. Would it look disrespectful to Miami to cut them down before the game? If we could just drop Kent one more place this would be my dream MACC for this year. That would put WMU, Ball State, NIU, BGSU and Miami all on our half of the bracket with Ohio, Buffalo and Kent all fighting for the right to meet the Zips.
  7. That was a weird one statistically. So the leading three point shooter was a 4 way tie between Antino (1 vote), Noah (no votes), Jimond (no votes) and Josh (whom I completely overlooked - I knew I was missing someone). So based on that and the Zips shooting a blistering 59% form three (all four of the leading shooters were 3-4) and the three point shooting raised the overall shooting percentage, the only one to get all three right was doccomet87. Congrats!
  8. Thank goodness Buffalo is able to offset their offensive rebounding by turning it over a lot. Zips up by 13.
  9. I also like Robotham's steady game. He's not flashy most of the time but he's pretty darn dependable. His last few games may have not been fantastic but I prefer to look at the "whole body of work". Still averaging around 8 points per game, shooting around 36% from 3, leading the team in assist to turnover ratio (and just barely behind Big Dog in assists per game) and second on the team at about 80% from the free throw line. I'd say that's a darn solid contribution from what you'd want from your point guard.
  10. Worried about this one, Buffalo games are always tough especially in Buffalo. I think Kwan starts rounding back into form but that the Zips don't play well overall. I think the end of the season is going to come down to the wire.
  11. Akron Zips (22-6, 12-3 MAC) at Buffalo Bulls (15-13, 9-6 MAC) Friday, February 24 •Alumni Arena Buffalo, N.Y. • 8:00 p.m. ET TV/Video: CBS Sports Network – Darren Goldwater (PxP) and Chris Walker (Analyst) Live Stats: GoZips.com/Schedule - Live Stats Radio: Akron-IMG Sports Network - Steve French (PxP) and Joe Dunn (Analyst) WARF 1350 AM (flagship), iHeart Radio, TuneIn.com/Akron Zips All-Time Series Akron Leads: 32-26 - Dambrot vs Buffalo: 16-12 at UA (16-12 Overall) How did Kent go into Alumni Arena and blow the Bulls out? Maybe this is their swoon? Zips broke a losing streak up there last year do they claim two in a row? Same Bulls channel, same Bulls time.
  12. I happened to be browsing ESPN and saw an article on some song/video challenge. Don't generally pay too much attention to such things but about halfway down something caught my eye. Maybe they are spending too much time practicing this sort of stuff? :-)
  13. I know a lot of people don't follow the women's sports but I still like to see them do well. Cross country and track are pretty much combined with the men's teams and continue to do well and swimming came out of nowhere a few years ago and won the MAC and continue to hold a lofty standard but the flagship programs (volleyball, soccer and basketball) are abysmal right now. Volleyball finished at 3-13, soccer at 1-6-4 (both missed the MAC playoffs) and basketball is sitting just a game from dead last at 2-13 three years after winning the MACC. For years the women were at least mediocre but they are all bottom of the barrel right now. Just puzzling to see the decline in all of them.
  14. Feeding the troll implies responding to him, he can post all he wants, even stupid things but if no one responds to him generally he gets tired and goes back to his parents basement.
  15. Don't feed a troll who isn't smart enough to know its still February.
  16. Nope, didn't forget (but I didn't make that one sadly), but we're old, that was in the previous century :-) I'm obviously pretty invested too since I will go to as many Zips events as I can make but I just try to keep it all in the proper perspective (which also doesn't mean I'm always successful :-))
  17. Here's how I look at it, I like these guys and I want them to do well and I want them to represent the University well but for crying out loud (seems like a very appropriate idiom right now) its a college basketball team/game. It has no real effect on your life other than entertainment. Yep I get upset with them sometimes too and maybe they are not playing very well right now but give these guys a break. It's a long season and you're not going to be at the top of your game every game. I hate calling out individual players for any reason (especially since none of us expert commentators can do anything of what they do - even if I was 6'10"). We have had an unprecedented run of success in Akron basketball over the last decade or so, I think any team in the league would trade places with us. So we haven't won an NCAA tournament game and might miss it this year even though it started off very promising - boo-hoo - its tough to win in the NCAA tournament period and especially out of the MAC. So the MAC has had a couple good runs over the last 15 years, what about the other 13? I've been to all three of the NCAA tournament games in this century and had a great time, its fun being part of it (well maybe not so much the VCU game ;-)). Would it have been more fun if we won? Sure but that's not why I go. There are 12 teams in our conference alone who are fighting for the top and under Keith the Zips have been consistently the best team in conference. It make it interesting every single year as opposed to what we lived in the 90's when it almost never mattered. /rant
  18. Again appropriately, no winners.
  19. Number one seed has still not been clinched.
  20. Didn't look like Johnson was moving at all.
  21. Always seems to come down to the last shot at BGSU but the Zips almost always win. Let's see if the luck holds up.
  22. Malcolm Gladwell is one of my favorite authors and while this is a number of years old I often wonder why more teams don't try this. Hope none of the lesser MAC teams start it or maybe with our relatively deep bench we should be the ones to do it.
  23. But apparently I lost Antino in the shuffle. He's actually ahead of Kwan in overall points although he's a year younger. Antino is at 943 so he should hit the 1,000 point mark this year. Since Big Dog reached it earlier this year we could have three 1,000 point career scorers on one team. Noah has a shot at it before the end of next year.
  24. Kwan is sitting on 901 points before tonight's game. Barring an absolute complete collapse the Zips have at least 6 games remaining (4 regular season, one MAC tournament and one postseason). He'll have to average 16.5 if there are only six, 14.1 for 7, 12.3 for 8, 11 for 9 and 9.9 for 10 (which is the most number of games I can realistically see the Zips getting to this season) to reach 1000. So its going to be tight but I think all of us would love to see him reach that milestone. A nice 25 point game tonight would go a long way in easing my mind about it.
  25. Akron Zips (22-5, 12-2 MAC) at Bowling Green (11-16, 5-9 MAC) Tuesday, February 21 • Stroh Center Bowling Green, Ohio • 9:00 p.m. ET TV/Video: Spectrum Sports – Greg Franke (PxP) and TBD (Analyst) Live Stats: GoZips.com/Schedule - Live Stats Radio: Akron-IMG Sports Network - Steve French (PxP) and Joe Dunn (Analyst) WARF 1350 AM (flagship), iHeart Radio, TuneIn.com/Akron Zips All-Time Series Akron Leads: 36-24 - Dambrot vs BGSU: 25-1 at UA (26-4 Overall) Before Keith Dambrot became the head coach, the Zips trailed in the all-time series 23-11. While Bowling Green hasn't been great over that time they have had a few good teams (a few years ago the Zips knocked them out of the MACC when BGSU was the #1 seed - also the same year that BGSU got their only victory over Keith), but this kind of dominance is mind-numbing.
