  1. I don't want to derail the thing you have going with Jake lol. But I wouldn't equate "throwing things at the National Guard" with anti-Americanism. Yes, you are right and to think some on this site want UA to look like CSU by vomiting the campus all through the downtown area with busy streets running through everything. Oh, that's right, if we build overpasses between buildings to compensate for the downtown streets, that will make everything look like a real campus...bridges, overpasses and a downtown arena...yes sir that will make UA the hot campus to want to be on. Dude you seriously should just go away. Your Akron hating, Can't State loving posts are getting annoying. I know you're going to get all whiny once i state this but Can't sucks dude, seriously. It's more than a rivalry, i'm just stating facts. They have professors that claim 9/11 was a "good thing for America", they have a history of Anti-Americanism (throwing stuff at the national guard), their campus looks like trash, they boo Army recruits being sworn in, they chant during national anthems, they vandalize their own stadium, etc etc. You'll argue "well it's just a few bad apples giving them a bad name" but the truth is it happens far too often to just be a few people. Can't State just sucks. Acknowledge that and be a Zips fan or go away. btw it's pretty lame that you voted your own school the worst campus in the state. It says a lot about your ability to make decisions on where to go to college/who to root for.
  2. I've never been to Y-Town State, so I fought that impulse to mark it anyhow. I chose CSU. Right now the "campus" is where Akron was 20 years ago. That being said, mark my words that in ten years it should be much much better environment for students. Between Akron and Can't, I've got to go with Can't as the better of the two. I am including downtown Can't/Water St. Bars in the equation. Their bar and restaurant scene is just a zillion times better than ours. While our student center, stadium, ej thomas and rec building are amazing, but we still are an unfinished campus in many ways...but we'll get there. Especially if the positive changes on campus can draw business back to Exchange.
  3. LOL, he looks like he's really struggling here. Then you see his skinny little "bird legs" and that's probably why!! He's gonna have to bulk up a bit if he wants to play on the team.
  4. Respectfully disagree re: benefits of the MAC. I think the Akron/Can't rivalry, and the others you listed to a large extent, survive any kind of fracturing of the conference. As long as we're both D1 programs, Akron (CUSA) vs. Can't (MAC) still is a great football/basketball contest. In fact, the difference in conferences only intensifies the rivalry. The only thing I would sincerely miss about Akron leaving is the b-ball MAC Tournament at the Q, which is absolutely amazing. There is a difference in "trying" to compete and the actual ability to compete week in and week out. The further I got away from the MAC, the more I realized how unrealistic it is to believe the league can compete every week at the highest level. There will always be cases when MAC schools beat BCS schools. I would argue that many of those BCS schools wouldn't make the top 40 of my list. The year we beat NC State, I think they finished the season with only 3 or 4 wins. I'd have to go back and look at my original post, but I don't think NC State was in the top 40. I don't thinks that's the point. Toledo, Miami, Northwestern, Indiana, Vandy who ever you pick, the will never compete week in week-out with the OSU's. It's not about a super difficult schedule made up of the top teams.... that's the NFL! For most programs it's about supporting your alma matter, hometown or in-state/regional team...... or the one with the nicest threads Top teams need the mids and bcs patsies to pad their schedules and make money. If they play a lot of FCS's they look like gits! For the mids it's still about rooting for your team win or lose. If you ever believed Akron was meant to compete w/ the likes tOSU week in week out in fb you were either ignorant or delusional. If your id dictates rooting for a perennial championship contender then move on and start cheering for the bucks on the side. It's OK, we all do it from time to time. Just don't imply that teams should be eliminated from competition due to inequities of the past. Change comes in small steps over long periods of time. Boisie has done a great job of moving up. Syracuse and Washington have done a great job of moving down. Will Akron get its chance?? time will tell, but they will always be my school, my town, my team!!! As for MAC/CUSA? I voted MAC because i don't see the benefits of CUSA. Akron and the MAC are tied together with strong rivalries. Akron/Can't BG/UT MU/OU etc. I don't see those splitting up in any realignment. While i somewhat avoid these threads i will say a new conference for the Zips is not out of the question as long as it satisfies the following criteria 1) Includes Can't (obvious), Ohio (Ozone, proximity, alumni, recent bb/fb rivalry type games) proximal CUSA teams Marshall (former budding rival and Rbowl bi**h) East Carolina (good program and located NC not TX) and remnant Big East FB members. 2) All-in includes soccer! Obviously these two are mutually exclusive given the elimination of Cants soccer program. Either way it is all highly doubtfull. Till then the MAC is right for the Zips!
  5. I waited a week to think this over. I finally chose CUSA. The MAC- I really like the conference for several reasons. The close proximity of the schools is terrific but I also think it keeps interest in the schools/games bottled up, restricted to the region. The deciding factor: I see the CUSA schools as more committed to upgrading the visibility and quality of their sports. Plus there is the fact we can still keep up our rivalry with Can't State. The MAC has had many, many years to get things going, and they just haven't done it.
  6. I think I remember Bernie Kosar saying that he felt that being under center was easier in the passing game. His take was that even the quick amount of time necessary to find the shotgun snap was valuable time the QB could be watching coverage the whole way.
  7. Right. Exchange St. on campus is absolutely awful right now. The new dorms by Grant were a good start to creating a vibrant neighborhood, but we still a long long way to go before this is truly great campus area.
  8. Good post. And I never, ever want to see the spread offense at the Info again (unless it's at a high school game).
  9. This is really discouraging...I hope a sponsor comes through. I've heard that they got a donor to sponsor the whole thing and rumor is that it will all be done by the fall. Could be wrong, just saying what I've heard. Unfortunately you are wrong. The first phase (Lights, new field, drainage, irrigation, etc.) is going to be completed on time. Phase Two (Grandstand) is in need of money and the university is looking to cut aspects of the stadium that will make it less than adequate for the level we aspire too. It's all about money now and Caleb needs help. No major donor has stepped forward. As with most capital projects, 80-90% of the fundraising is done quietly before it ever goes public or gets to people like you and me. Those deep-pocket donors are being pursued but none have committed. This project is in danger.
  10. Ecactly! The U is dropping the ball here. As long as Exchange St. is treated like a highway instead of a campus main street it will be harder to shed the commuter school label.
  11. I have to reiterate. My problem is not so much how it looks, it is the placement. The way that this garage is so crammed up against the sidewalk does absolutely nothing to improve the campus. I mean, can two groups of people walking in the opposite direction even fit on this sidewalk? Exchange St. is our Main Street. And like the best Main Street's everywhere, it should be vibrant, lined with storefronts and places to facilitate more walking and less (or slower!) drivng.
  12. Huh, I wonder if the natural result is to choose the easiest classes. I know I wouldn't want to be challenging myself too much if it risked losing a scholarship. Larry Dawson doesn't need the athletic scholarship. He is part of some deal through a local attorney that awards a number of scholarships to inner city kids. He goes to school for free as long as he maintains a 3.0 or better.
  13. Okay, here's my idea: Simply move the soccer field closer to the student center. The student center is an awesome building, and would work nicely in "framing" out the field, making the "stadium" look more substantial. And plus, imagine those second floor balconies overlooking the field on game day! Amazing. You would get some great use out of that space. There's already tables, great views, etc. It could be just like loge seating. And, this would bring the action closer to civilization. You wouldn't have to create new vending areas, bathrooms, etc. It is all pre-existing, already paid for. This, I think, would help lead to an amazing game day environment. Hey UA, steal this idea...it's a freebie.
  14. Well, I missed that one. I LIVE HERE in CLE and had no idea...I'll have my ZN card revoked for sure!! How was it?
  15. Let me preface this by saying I had a great time at the game. I agree that OU's cheering was louder than we were, but they also seemed to have three times the number in their student section. For whatever the reason, I think we have to do a better job getting organized for our games at the Q. We need to OWN that place! I'm afraid that for too many Akron fans, the idea of coming up to Cleveland is like driving to some far away, distant place. Those holdouts from the Hipsher era need to get hold of a map with I-77 lol. Okay, here's one solution I think that might help. Next year, we absolutely NEED to have a bar/restaurant sponsoring the Akron fans. K.e.n.t. State usually has Flannery's on E. 4th. (And for that, I boycott them). But we need a place to call our own, and it needs to be ground zero where we can all meet up and get psyched for the game. We need to help provide an atmosphere that makes the casual fan desperately want to be a part of the action. Again, the championship game didn't go our way. It was exciting, a terrific game. I met a lot of great fans from both sides. The media coverage was excellent...but we Zip fans just aren't quite there yet when it comes to bringing our numbers in full strength. We need to encourage more of our numbers to make the trip north and just have fun with this! GO ZIPS
  16. Reghi has always pronounced it that way. He gets corrected every game, but I think he just like to have fun with it at this point. Reghi! Irie mon!LOL mon!!!!p.s. I am LOVING all of the WKNR attention to the MAC tourney and our ZIPS
  17. LETS GO ZI-IPS (CLAP CLAP CLAP CLAP CLAP)I'm looking out my office window overlooking the Q...sending some positive vibes down that way. The Goodyear blimp is overhead and looking good. Listening to WKNR 2 on the net....I am liking our team in this one....Akron 58EMU 53
  18. All righty, don't anyone take this personal but 95 percent of you guys are taking this the wrong way.You are making this issue, lack of Zips coverage in the media like a personal thing....bias vs. Pluto or bias vs. mainstream rags, etc. Heck, your personal opinions may even be valid. But that doesn't matter. You all have to stop behaving like a spurned customer and start think more like a promoter. Sure the die hard fans are going to be here posting on ZN. But if you haven't noticed, we're not filling the JAR or the Info by ourselves. Maybe I'm different, but I think Akron sports and the K.E.N.T. rivalry is one of the best things going in NE Ohio. Don't let your personal bias get in the way of the fact that when the Beacon Journal or Plain Dealer cover our Zips, that's a good thing, and necessary to getting more people aka lemmings out there to realize the value of Akron athletics. Seriously, it takes 10 seconds to make a short comment about an online news story, or to email WKNR. It's no trouble at all. And what could it hurt?
  19. email tony rizzo <rizzo@espncleveland.com>; call 216 578 0850latest email "What is the difference between a Can't State fan and a Carp? One is a bottom dwelling scum sucker. The other is a fish."BEST RIZZO SHOW EVER
  20. Guys, I am challenging everyone on this forum to start responding CONSTRUCTIVELY to any and all media coverage we get for the Zips. This is so easy...please take the time to comment on articles posted online. It takes a few seconds. We need to combat the misconception that nobody cares about Akron or the MAC. The media will NEVER increase coverage unless they get the sense that people want more. That's one of the very few areas where we can actually make a real difference. This response from Terry Pluto is a prime example of what I'm talking about:FROM TERRY PLUTO:2. I wrote 2 columns about new Akron football coach, and how many emails did I get from fans? One. It was a complaint about a lack of coverage.3. I covered the last Akron/Can't game. How many emails from fans on that? ZERO.4. I wrote a story about how Can't running back Eugene Jarvis deserved another year from the NCAA -- got about 6 emails on that.5. So far, I have not received a single email on this Akron/Can't story. That's at least 5 MAC type stories in the last few months from me. 6. My point is that MAC fans seldom respond, and when they do, it is to complain about lack of coverage. 7. I really do like writing about the MAC, especially Akron and Can't. I don't care about the lack of emails, but it is odd that there is almost zero response to the stories -- other than to say, there is no coverage.TERRY PLUTO
  21. DR Z, you really should tune in again...this is great. Some nice calls from the AK-rowdies.last emails that Rizzo read:"What do you call a hot girl on Can't State's campus?" A visitor"What do Akron grads give their kids for Christmas? Your bike" OUCH!!!!!"Who do you guys in Can't think you are? Haven't you heard of Jason Taylor...of John Heisman? We have a fine tradition at Akron, and our athletes aren't criminals like yours. We're going to kick to from one end of the JAR to the other. Then you can limp back home to licking trees at your commune in Hippytown you ignorant fools."This is one of the few days we're getting real radio attention. I urge you, Zipsnation, to take part in this!!!
  22. Oh yeah, Zips and flushes going at each other on the show today big time!!!I love it.p.s. Anyone else hear the interview where I got my Can't State grad buddy to admit "Can't read, can't write....can't state" on the air?? Priceless.
  23. Brilliant post...hope the powers that be are reading this forum.
