  1. Whoa, good point. I wonder if he would have that problem now if he used this location.
  2. My apologies if you already know this....a big reason Bert Wolstein's soccer bid unraveled was because the stadium location desired in Twinsburg area had a very large retail component attached. I believe his siting intention was to draw both Akron and Cleveland fans, just as with the Cavs in neutral Richfield. While I preferred a Cleveland location, the attached retail idea made great sense to me regarding generating revenues. If you've seen how deserted the area around Crew Stadum in Columbus, (or Browns Stadium for that matter) you know they really dropped the ball by incorporating zero spinoff development. Concerns over traffic, falling economy and the overall large size of the project were factors in the delay and subsequent shelving. If Bert were still alive I have a good feeling we would soon have an MLS team here in Northeast Ohio. Here are 11 pages detailing the history of the project: http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php/topic,7469.0.html
  3. Nice article. Actually there should be a Heisman Marketing campaign at Akron. Not for any one player, but simply marketing the fact that John Heisman coached here!
  4. Most of the time it's just not easy to be a Zips fan.
  5. I refuse to participate until I get my trophy from last years contest. Anyone remember the infamous Jeremy Bruce end around?
  6. Let's say I was using "off base" as a military, and not a baseball reference! My point about the "real" question was my unsuccessful attempt to defray another football vs. soccer reaction from the Zips faithful. And, I honestly believe it to be a valid question.
  7. That pretty much sums it up. And an emphasis on the word "small". Sorry, but that's just the way it is. And I don't see that ever changing. You guys are getting way off base with the football vs. soccer question. The REAL question is will the people in and around Akron support local COLLEGE ATHLETICS?
  8. They really should have a WKNR tent set up in the stadium for every home game. Heck, invite every newspaper, tv and radio station in NEO to have a presence there.
  9. Yes indeed, very fun to watch...however If I remember correctly, we primarily ran out of a running formation with a fullback when Biggs was here most of the time, not this crap Shotgun-run nonsense of the past few years right? Hopefully going back to a proper running attack will allow our backs to get back to the Payne/Hendry/Biggs days. Correct, the running game had changed to a more shotgun, read oriented system the past few years. Our backs were being asked to take the ball practically from a standing start after the quarterback had made a read on the defense and turn it into something. It was an offensive scheme that put the back at a disadvantage from the get go. I to hope we can get back to a more traditional style offense this year. Put the QB under center and let the RB get a head of steam going when he takes the ball. Please, you're leaving out the intimidating "ten second stare at the sideline" before the snap. Man was our offense pathetic or what. Consistently handing the ball off to a stationary back absolutely sucks. I don't ever, ever want to have to watch that again.
  10. IF true, then so sad. Actually IF true, it shows complete lack of caring or interest in the UofA to have the 'Akron' brand promoted beyond Summit County line. I have an idea....why don't we put "ZIPS ZIPS ZIPS ZIPS ZIPS ZIPS ZIPS ZIPS ZIPS" on every highway bridge in Summit County. Soon every driver passing through will be in awe. That way nobody can possibly forget about us!!!!! Classy and effective.
  11. Funny story...at the first game I was in Lot 9 when an Akron cop drove straight up to me on a four-wheeler. He was staring daggers not really at me, but at the glass bottle of Great Lakes I was flaunting in my hand. I finally realized my offense and said, "Oh, sorry" and coolly hid the bottle behind my back. He gave me the "okay" sign, smiled and continued on his way. The city and campus police are fine with it. It's the state liquor people that like to wander around that you have to keep an eye out for. Yeah... if you are under 21. There are absolutely no restrictions on drinking at InfoCision unless you have glass, or are under age.
  12. I never said CSU was getting a football team....we're just talking about their campus environment. I agree, but they won't be able to match what other urban schools have become/are becoming. Akron/Toledo/Ohio State/UC have room for thousands of students to live on campus(Ohio State obviously has a lot more being the largest university in the country..). Meanwhile Cleveland State has rooms for a few hundreds of students, not thousands. Once again, I agree. CSU is on an upswing, but they won't be able to match the atmosphere that other urban Ohio schools have growing. Cleveland State WILL NOT have a football team. Does anyone understands how hard it is to start one at any level? They don't even have a place to have games(and if anyone thinks that Browns Stadium is an option, you will see 50-60,000 orange seats and I am being nice!). Getting rid of dead weight, then adding it back makes no sense. It is the "directional schools" mentality that will not fix the conference.
  13. Ha ha Spin....I've decided after fifteen years of inter-netting, there truly needs to be a universal "sarcasm" font for online discussion!
  14. Selling the ultra comfortable and well constructed Memorial Seats!!! I love it when the school and I agree on a good idea. That's happened...well......once.
  15. Would an upstart FCS team help them to lose the status? The question for me is: Would anyone go to their games? Plenty of vacant property on the East side to build a stadium, but who would want to venture into that part of town? But what do you do? Build another football stadium right in Browns Town? Try competing for fan interest in the Browns back yard. And talk about a "commuter school". I'm trying to find reasons why this would work. And I can't find any. Hey Skip, lots of people- over a million- visit right in the vicinity of the CSU campus each year! http://www.playhousesquare.org/default.asp...PlayhouseSquare I think with all the investment that is going on, that in ten years CSU will be looking pretty good. p.s. I voted EMU off the island. When they changed from the "Hurons" (COOL) to "Eagles" (ULTRA-GENERIC) I just could no longer appreciate their school, their program or their awful "E" helmets.
  16. Post of the year. As Zips fans we can tolerate nothing but absolute perfection.
  17. Our attendance numbers looking good, and things look to get even better. Another good selling point to potential recruits!!! GO ZIPS
  18. That may make sense, but I hate the idea of more "directional" schools!!!!
  19. This email speaks volumes. Thanks for posting CK. Obviously TW does not consider my Z-Fund donation, or potential for future donations worth much. He also feels that I do not really have all that much invested (his words, not mine) in the University's athletic programs. That, as GP1 observed, is a real slap in the face. I will keep my season football and basketball tickets, and attend the other UA athletics events that I have always enjoyed. But if I am booted from Lot #9 due to my investment in UA athletics being considered insignificant, I will withhold my 2010 Z-Fund donation. Like my wife's law school donation, will revisit things the following year. But it appears UA does not value the money my family donates. And there is only one way to voice my displeasure over it...at least in a way the TW will feel, and understand. There are a lot of great people at UA, and programs I enjoy supporting financially. But I took a 10% pay cut the past two years, due to the recession. And also lost about 30% of my commission/bonus. This isn't the best of economic times, and I need to spend my money where I feel it is valued. Tom made his business decision. I'll make mine.
  20. Litigation Lager...Even better! By the way, I was shocked that BW-2's on Exchange pulled our beloved ROO BREW from the menu. Come on Akron fans...tell these places you want to (unofficially) support the Zips and buy a terrific local product.
  21. Great quote!!!!! My heart is filled with Kangaroo pride GO ZIPS
  22. That draft has the distinctive hue of Great Lakes Dortmunder Gold!!!!! ZW, you should submit your photo for the front cover of the 2010 media guide.
  23. Over Mike Clark, Dennis Brumfield, James Black, Doug Lewis??????????? Never, LOL who are those guys?
