  1. Hey GP1, are you often in Myrtle Beach??Not trying to pick you up lol, my bro in law has an east coast style sub shop there right by Coastal's campus...mention me and the Zips and you're sure to get a discount. If you are around you should definitely check it out! Subs and Suds4006 Postal WayMyrtle Beach843-236-8554
  2. Hi there RootforRoo44, what traffic are you specifically referring to? Is it traffic from the existing proposal, or concerning the theory that there should (or should not) be retail along that stretch? I don't think Exchange is a good street to fully close off. But traffic there, and on most of the streets along campus and downtown have to be tamed a bit. Especially true downtown where the one way streets are like having Route 8 going right through the city! Why is nobody asking the big question? Where will all the traffic go? It's already tough enough in that area but imagine all of the extra cars leaving peak class times/big events. Can you imagine?
  3. MD Zip, thanks for adding such incredible insight and discourse on the topic!!
  4. I'm not renewing season tickets unless we get:1. Flying A circa 1991 on one side of helmet2. Script "Zips" on the other side3. Pants that feature a logo of the polymer building on the thighsThese are my demands.
  5. Not really the point, it's the location of the garage that is the concern. The sad truth is that we're still and always may be a commuter school, which does not reflect well on the University. But to place the garage in such prominance, fronting a street that could/should be the main drag through campus, is not only bad planning but gives the appearance that Akron places a higher priority on parking rather than building a beautiful, functional, vibrant, pedestrian-centric campus neighborhood.Feel free to disagree zippy5, but I've been to beautiful cities and colleges all over the country. And it is not a good idea to have long stretches of your main street have giant parking garages aka dead zones fronting the sidewalk.
  6. I'm certainly no talent evaluator. I can't say whether our players are better than anyone else in the leage. And this is a league I cannot figure out.....by most accounts it is not a good one. I haven't been amazed by anyone's offense this year. Every team in the MAC looks undersized on defense. I will say, however, that I've absolutely hated the offensive scheme since Getsy left. I remember the blue/gold scrimmage in the new fieldhouse and thinking it looked very high schoolish. And I've hated the defense even more, who hasn't...so inconsistent. Yeah I'd rather be enjoying the soccer team, they're awesome. But I desperately want our football team to find an identity under some new coaching. In all my years of watching the Zips, it would be truly amazing to have a team with both a prolific offense and a consistent, tough defense. Great offense...solid defense.....has that ever happened here?
  7. Hey there Nav. If you check out the deck facing Exchange it just doesn't look like the design is compatible with retail. Perhaps a retrofit would work out? But to have the garage be this extra large dead zone on what is perhaps the most important street along campus is backward thinking. Whether small town or large city, this setup does not make for a good, vibrant neighborhood. Nor does a moat or monorail, lol.And I don't think having University buildings leasing space to retailers is at all incompatible. I mean, there always has been retailers within the campus. Just look at the student Center, new dorms or Polsky with McDonalds, Starbucks, Bike Shop etc etc.
  8. Our group has GA seats but we always sit in the student section for the atmosphere ie more yelling, standing during the game, etc. you didn't look hard enough.I don't sit with the student section even though I am an Akron student. I sit in GA with my parents who are season ticket holders. If you looked in the student section next to the band I think there were about 10 rowdies and I am being very generous. Pretty pathetic and IMO seeing that made me glad I don't associate with the rowdies.
  9. I mean it, congrats to the band. I was inside the bar for halftime, sorry I missed that.... but you guys were really awesome during the game today. When I counted right before halftime it was two to our left and 14 to the right, and I don't think one of them is enrolled this semester.regardless of who is there, you guys do a helluva job and are a highlight of the gameday experience.Thanks. These last couple games down the stretch here we were just trying to give people something to watch and keep ourselves entertained by cheering on the team, especially at the Temple game... This was my third, and by far best year so far. Regardless of what's happening on the field, things are really looking up for the band in the coming years.
  10. Exactly, the garages are out of scale, even with the new large dorms across the street. That part of Exchange should be lined with small businesses that cater to the growing student population. Traffic should be slower, and the entire area made to be more, not less, pedestrian friendly. The placement and design of the garage could have been much better.
  11. Quickzips, I went to Akron for four years of undergrad in the early 90's, and then three years of law school. I never bought a parking pass, ever, yet I still managed to get to all of my classes on time by parking in the neighborhood across from Exchange St. Quickzips, I simply said "I'm not even sure it's necessary." Forgive me I graduated in 1999. No need to get upset, but is parking that much worse today than in the early 90's? Or is it that people are people just too lazy to walk for 15 minutes? And I'm not against parking garages at all. Just the placement and aesthetics of this one. Spoken like someone who has absolutely no clue what parking is like on this campus on a day to day basis. Honestly, I haven't even read the rest of your post after that. You lost all credibility with that one point right there. Parking has been a nightmare on this campus all year. It is not unusual to have a student miss a good chunk of a class because they have spent 45 minutes or more circling multiple lots just hoping that they spot someone backing out of a parking place. This deck is an absolute necessity and whatever complaints you have about it are without any type of valid reason.
  12. I didn't see one student in the entire stadium!!!!On a side note, the band sounded terrific during the whole game. THREE WINS BABY
  13. I want to comment on the new parking garage that is looming over Exchange like a concrete tidal wave. Unlike virtually every other campus project in the Proenza era, this one is not looking good. Not only will it be a major league eyesore, it's simply bad planning. I'll explain.Though increased parking may in fact be necessary, and I'm not even sure it is, the design of it is simply awful. It's counterproductive to a campus that is aesthetically challenged to begin with. Coming from Wolf Ledges or Grant, this structure is now by far the dominant image of our school. It simply sends the wrong message and virtually screams "commuter school." It echoes the sad realization that we may never have walkable, vibrant urban neighborhood but instead a campus that caters to cars speeding by at 45 mph. The way that it infringes upon the sidewalk is a prime example of poor planning. In a city like Akron where the downtown and the campus desperately need each other, the design of this structure will be a major impediment to connectivity. Garages fronting on city sidewalks are bad news. This area will certainly be a dead zone along the sidewalk that will not foster walking between a resurgent downtown (including the new student residences) and main campus. The University should know better; they should have had the foresight to designing this enourmous garage with ground floor retail. This would have made the stretch of campus welcoming, vibrant and useful. The school could have leased out the space for added revenues. This parking garage is a design failure, pure and simple. U of A should have done a much better job of concealing it, and its construction is testament to a huge oversight on the part of the decision-makers of the school. For an expample of how a parking garage should function in a city and need not be an eyesore, check out Fat Fish Blue in Cleveland:http://z.about.com/d/cleveland/1/0/t/C/-/-/fatfish.jpg
  14. 900 pound Kangaroo > 800 pound gorilla!!!!!
  15. I'll have to disagree though uafan... I think a lot of the players care. For the most part I've witnessed the team playing pretty hard, Matt Rogers and D. Bowser come to mind. Many others consistently seem to be going all out on every play. I will say that for years the defense, as a whole, has looked bewildered and confused in giving up big plays. This is not new. I distinctly remember the Buffalo game in particular where the Defense played really tough, coming straight at the Bulls, hard tackling etc. But they still gave up 43 points in the OT loss!!!! Now it's the offense that looks absolutely and inexplicably out of sorts, but this isn't new either. Remember Getsy's senior year? Awful. And this year the offense is worse than awful. Maybe it's the O-line we can blame, I don't know, but my point is I've witnessed many Zips players giving it their all this season. I simply can't explain all the losing we've witnessed in the last few years... EXACTLY! I think the talent is here, at least as much as most other MAC teams, but if you look at my past posts, I've pointed out many examples of poor coaching. A new coach needs to light a fire under some butts and have the players show some enthusiasm. Like Captains previous example, the kids don't seem to care!
  16. Jake/Blake, what is your goal in posting your opinions on this forum?
  17. Welcome LH.I will never forget watching Michael King with the Crunch. He was awesome. This Just in: We have another 2010 commitment. From Top Drawer and ESPN reports, a verbal from Gabriel Genovesi, Mequon, Wisconsin. Not familiar with this kid. No position listed, no national team play. Will try to find more. He's the second commit, after US-U17 captain Perry Kitchen.I am from WI and joined to follow Genovesi as he goes on to Akron. If it helps, Genovesi was recruited by several D1 schools (SLU, Wake Forest, GTown, GWU, to name a few) in all 3 field positions. He played USSF Academy for FC Milwaukee but now plays on a mens team (ages range from 20-30), the MK Majors. He is also a State Track Champion in the 400m and has the longest throw in I have ever seen in my life. He did play for the WI 1992 ODP team and the regional team but then joined the USSF Academy, where they do not allow you to do ODP. His Dad is FDU Hall of Famer Michael King and who holds a NCAA D1 scoring record and played with the Cleveland Crunch. Another interesting note is that he started playing soccer in 8th grade. 18. Hey, our jambalaya!!!And our football....both famous lol.
  19. Zipmeister, do not challenge my knowledge of obscure trivia!!!!During bad rain storms it was not uncommon for skeletons to wash up out of nowhere. This is not true nor is the campus built on an old cemetery.
  20. You sound kinda upset.Good, join the club. Your an idiot for even posting such a statement. People like you make me sick. How this one? Hey Zips fans do you think I will get a life? Hope the players are not reading this garbage. I'm sure the coaches are smart enough not to read your crap!!!With six games left in the season are you kidding me. Why can't an idiot that has so much time on his hands make a choice to be positive and stop bashing a team that has been handed every bad thing ever imaginable? Must be an NE Ohio thing.....being down all the time.johnny zip84 (local idiot)Carlton Jackson quit the team...left them because he wanted to pursue his own agenda..he was not a team guy and he couldn't play against Division I teams! I'm glad that your glad for him....he is lucky he is going to a school that doesn't have a class attendance policy, he would never in his life be eligible to play for the ZIPS because he never went to class, but I am happy your happy for him because I am sure he is happy not having to be a responsible man in college.....gosh your such an idiot dude!!!!!!Last time I checked the Zips were Division I. Zips 41 -CJ 0........ dude.......you people around here are twisted. If you really feel like bashing the Zips go get a sign and walk around campus....I just check the weather in Akron...Sunny and cool!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!But, you won't do it....none of you will, because none of you have the balls, you all hide behind fictitious names and act like you have all the answers!Go Zips...go win one and shut up all these idiots that have nothing better to do than be negative and sorry for breathing!!!!! I can't believe you folks in Akron.....I am glad I graduated and got out of the midst of you hostile ignorant downers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
