  1. Hi eguins. Akron does this, except they invited several h.s. bands for one game a year. You're right, it definitely works, and the bands themselves help fill in the stands. I just wish we could get more die hard college football fans there on a regular basis. The band crowds I've experienced tend to be a little disinterested with the actual game...then again, so was I this past season lol.
  2. I was in SB back in Feb and it is a great great town....absolutely beautiful. To be there in person to see our Zips win it all this year would be amazing!!
  3. It would be very cool if we can have the scoreboard broadcast someone reading through and commenting on the scores. Maybe have a media student or invite guest local personalities to do the read. p.s. Whisky Dicks...right, what a stupid name...let's all hang out there lol.
  4. Tailgating is a huge part of the football game day experience and we Zip fans have a long way to go in this area. I think I have a crew ready for the fall that have bought into the party aspect. Not necessarily Zip fans yet, but a group of guys that like football, beer and fun. They have already realized that the Info is close to home, admission is cheap, and the Barley House is a great place for the after game party. So, I am working on my tailgate setup for the fall now. I am gonna kick it up a few notches from last year. Give me a couple of years and I will have my buds singing "We cheer the Akron Blue and Gold..." See you in lot 34! Right!!! We usually have a group of around 12 people. To be honest, half of them don't really even know the rules of the game. They bring their kids, some food, have a few illegal beers and try and have fun with it. But yeah, we have a long way to go but our tailgate scene will improve I am sure. I think once the businesses along Exchange improve (HOPEFULLY SOON) it can greatly add to the party atmosphere. BW-2's and former Paninis? just don't cut it. p.s. We might be giving up Lot 9 for the new adventure of Lot 34 next year.
  5. No way!!! I've got to miss Syracuse unfortunatley, but my Zips would not let me down by losing the G-Web game lol.
  6. Who can we speak with about getting scores from other ncaa games on the scoreboard?? Just so you know, ISP is in charge of getting ads on the score board, not marketing the games.
  7. There's a good chance we can play well and still start the season 1-3. But I fully expect the Zips to be competitive in the final 8 games. 5-7 likely, 6-6 would be one heck of a rebound for the program.
  8. True to an extent, but I think that's a bit oversimplified. Not even the New York Yankees or LA Lakers work on that forumula alone to bring in a full house. I think a winning team would bring a lot to the game day experience. Bring in a good team to play there and the stadium will come alive.
  9. I know the stadium is brand new, but still, it definitely has an air of being unfinished. I think additional improvements to the stadium and overall gameday experience/atmosphere would go a long long way.
  10. The thing worth saving inside are the old school wooden CHAIRS up in the stands. Believe me, I was in there last summer and they are super comfortable. That and the hardwood floors look to be in excellent condition for reuse. p.s. I hope the squirrel living up in the rafters reads this article
  11. ^ Not to get too far off topic, this being the football thread...but you're right. Everything surrounding the basketball games at the JAR is boring. From the uncomfortable, poorly designed facilities on up, it does seem more like a high school event. Being winter, there is absolutely no allure for me to come to campus. There are much better bars/restaurants where I live in Lakewood. Or I'll just listen to the game on the radio. On the other hand, I do think that football has a real upside because of tailgating. The tailgate scene should improve as people become more comfortable with the Info. I made it a point to invite old friends and their families to a game. I felt if I could get someone at just one game, they would recognize that the entire experience could be fun, social event regardless of the outcome on the field. As the tailgating culture improves, you will see the tradition take hold.
  12. This is the thread that the new AD needs to take a look at.
  13. Me: Whoa, it looks like Rutgers was invited to join the Big 10 The Wife: What? Rutgers? That's a real stretch...with their history of losing and all. I only know one person who even cares about Rutgers football. To put this in further perspective, my wife is from Jersey. And she chose to attend Akron over Rutgers.
  14. I was (wrongly?) under the impression there were ZERO household name grads of UA outside of sports...did not know about the Black Keys, Moldea and George Wallace. If that's true, very cool. You can't count the astronauts honorary degrees! John Greene (just talked to him last month) is not an Akron alum either Ph.D., Cornell University B.A., University of Colorado So, I think the award to most famous (non sports) Akron grad ever goes to..... George Wallace?
  15. For your viewing amazement: K-ent http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php/topic,22939.0.html AK-ron http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php/topic,20388.0.html
  16. I used to run the direct snap to Hendry in NCAA 2003 and it worked like a charm everytime. The only time it failed was against Wisconsin near the goal line. Some sort of glitch prevented him from scoring Why do I have the feeling that Wisconsin scored on a huge TD pass soon after lol.
  17. I must say I am guilty of living in the past on my Gamecube. I try not to brag too much about my mad skills, but I've had a lot of success especially on offense with Frye and Hendry. He is not fl.a.shy, but pretty solid at RB. I just hate it though when Hixon gets an INT and gets chased down by the other teams 300 pound offensive lineman. So realistic lol....
  18. Good to hear!! Maybe this thread should be renamed Zips in the _FL. Early on in his career I just couldn't believe how DK kept getting the ball so much...sure he looked fast, but if he brushed against the pinky finger or shoelace of the D-lineman you knew he was going down. Then something happened. DK completely turned his game around and just started running straight through guys. He got tough and competed with complete confidence. Great to watch. I put him up right up with Brandon Payne in my all time favorite RB's.
  19. Ron Paul is pretty compelling. I think he may be too honest to win the presidency. But he has my vote next time around.
  20. The second one! High School grades? I question the authenticity of the North American high school in question. This? or this?
  21. I would think high school grades/gpa would be good statistical analysis. Not simply as a measure of intelligence but for commitment and discipline.
  22. What do you call it then? Protesting is as American as it gets but getting violent is a different story. Well, some could argue that this country was founded on violent protests. Little different circumstances. Throwing things at innocent people who are doing their job and are keeping the peace due to someone protesting a war to stop the spread of communism VS. troops directly under the command of the person oppressing the people. Actually, as an American and a History major i find it extremely offensive to compare Can't State protesters to the patriots that founded this country. Root, your very succinct description of the Vietnam war likely tells me we're not going to agree on much. But because you're a history major you surely understand the complete turmoil that was going on in the 60's with multiple assassinations, institutionalized racism, distrust of government and the growing death toll of our troops. Not saying it was right for some of the K-ent protesters to throw teargas back at the guard, break windows or whatever. But the fact that this student backlash was going on not in Berkley but instead by "normal kids" in middle America makes the event significant, I think. p.s. lol now we're way of topic
  23. Just heard on WKNR, LeBron James will be accepting his MVP award at The University of Akron. Some nice publicity coming our way!!!
  24. Yes, you are right and to think some on this site want UA to look like CSU by vomiting the campus all through the downtown area with busy streets running through everything. Oh, that's right, if we build overpasses between buildings to compensate for the downtown streets, that will make everything look like a real campus...bridges, overpasses and a downtown arena...yes sir that will make UA the hot campus to want to be on. Dude you seriously should just go away. Your Akron hating, Can't State loving posts are getting annoying. I know you're going to get all whiny once i state this but Can't sucks dude, seriously. It's more than a rivalry, i'm just stating facts. They have professors that claim 9/11 was a "good thing for America", they have a history of Anti-Americanism (throwing stuff at the national guard), their campus looks like trash, they boo Army recruits being sworn in, they chant during national anthems, they vandalize their own stadium, etc etc. You'll argue "well it's just a few bad apples giving them a bad name" but the truth is it happens far too often to just be a few people. Can't State just sucks. Acknowledge that and be a Zips fan or go away. btw it's pretty lame that you voted your own school the worst campus in the state. It says a lot about your ability to make decisions on where to go to college/who to root for. What do you call it then? Protesting is as American as it gets but getting violent is a different story. Hmm, I'd probably call it anti-authority or anti-establishment.
