Wow, good poll. I voted NCAA but it's close, 24-22 in favor of the "Big Dance." The NIT winner is NOT the "65th best" team, be nice. But one and out in the NCAA would still give the school more general recognition. The question gets tougher if Akron were to win the NIT. How would people measure that with NCAA Tourny? See ya at the Q/Gateway/Gund

Yes, Zippy IS the "anti-mascot." I vote for never, ever substantially changing Zippy.Well said Rob

I was proud to be at the Can't game. It was surreal, a great football experience. Sure, I lingered inside a little long after halftime but it was fun. Anyway, it was great NOT having some Akron "fan" behind me asking me to sit down for the whole game, as in the MCB.p.s. that Turkey game was not the coldest game I've ever experienced. That would def have to be Chargers at Browns, 2004. Beer froze in the cup just like a slurpee.

Just wanted to add that I thought the JAR looked great on espn 2 yesterday.

I posted a message about the article but it was deleted I just clicked on the above link and got it okay. There was no requirement to register.

Video highlight reel is a GREAT GREAT idea whose time has come. It's all about maximizing entertainment value. And getting the home crowd riled up big time. I was at a SD Padres game last year. Before their games they have a fantastic intro. Each player is shown hitting HR's or making diving catches with area landmarks as a digital backdrop. The Tribe has a similar presentation. While not as flushy it's still very good.

WOW. This is the best news!!!!!! :macc:

Score one for the Beacon!!!

I do not know why, but I have called numerous bars that do have satellite and they say they do not have ESPN U. I spose I could drive an hour to the JAR. But this is not what I expected from a "televised" game dammit. :macc:
-
If somebody could find a bar in NE Ohio that 1. has ESPN U and 2. will show the game I would be most appreciative. Thanks

Yes, his point on attendence is right. Attendence is bad. But everyone knows that already. His purpose is to exonerate the ABJ and his reasoning just doesn't fly with me.
-
ESPN U hardly counts as being "televised."Past phone call:me "Hi, do you guys have ESPN U?"bw3's "Um, what?"me "the channel, E S P N U?"bw3's "i've never heard of it...I'll get the manager."mgr "What are you looking for?"me" The Akron football game, it's on ESPN U?"mgr "Never heard of it....sorry" Even dodgeball is televised on ESPN 8...the "Ocho"

Why does this make me dislike the ABJ even more? I've read it 3 times. IMO it is simply 1. a thinly veiled attack on the University and fans2. a condescending attempt to justify ABJ's historical ambivalence for the Zips. Interestingly, the tone of the article is almost like anger, as if from someone who knows the paper is going down the tubes, yet can do nothing to stop it.

Can't Football Recruiting
scottditzen replied to Captain Kangaroo's topic in Akron Zips Football Recruiting
I second that nomination!!! :macc: -
I love the MAC. But I have no problem hearing rumors that the school is thinking "bigger." The very notion that Rutgers is a Big East program leaves me no doubt that it's at least possible that Akron could move there in the future. But for now, I'm loving the MAC rivalries. :macc:

Thanks for the post PackBlue. It's a great sign for our program to draw a quality team like Nevada. My buds are gonna be so psyched if we can see this game on TV. LETS GO ZIPS

Do you like our current uniforms?
scottditzen replied to Ryno aka Menace's topic in Akron Zips Football
Yes, once again, those numbers are a little too big!!!!! -
There is lots of cool, inspirational architecture in Akron. The place has a great history and the stadium should reflect that. I'm worried that they'll go in a different direction, and try too hard to match it with the field house or even student union. :macc:

I believe Akron has some of the finest jersey's in college football. Very photogenic. Though, I do wish the numbers were a little bit smaller and more conventional looking. Now if we could only find Zips merch in the stores..... :macc: -
I used to bring the Beacon down to Columbus when I had to work down there. My co-workers appreciated this for 2 reasons:1) The "crime reports" were beyond hysterical. I mean it. Bizarre. It was there I learned that a wife will strike a husband with absolutely ANYTHING she can get her hands on. The reporter who wrote them up should write for Letterman he's that good. Then, strangely enough, the reporters brother was killed in Akron and he had to report it.2) They would laugh as the paper got progressively thinner, finally resembling OSU's Lantern, or the Buchtellite, but with less original content. Barely a mention of Div 1 sports, be it Akron or K e n t. The BJ, home of the 1.5 page Sports section!! Yet thankfully they don't skimp on the precious 12 pages of DEALERSHIP ADS.Anyhow, the image of Akron to many outsiders is that it's a strange, twilight zone-ish backwater of a city. At least, the content and shoddy appearance of the ABJ perpetuates that image. But I don't care, I like to root for the underdog anyway. :macc: p.s. for the record, I never actually buy the ABJ b/c I've been protesting their lack of U of A coverage for 5-6 years now. I'm awaiting an editorial apologizing for that. Until that happens I'd rather throw my 25 cents in the river.

In my opinion Frye has a much stronger arm than Drew Brees did as a rookie. Add that Frye is much faster and can throw on the run. I see no reason why Charlie Frye shouldn't improve with each game and be the Browns starter for years to come.

Random Thoughts on Everything
scottditzen replied to Captain Kangaroo's topic in Akron Zips Football
Anyone who calls Frye a "loser" while at Akron knows absolutely nothing. And with regard to arm strength, Drew Brees was all pro last year. Arm strength is important, but not essential for NFL success. -
Reasonable or Audacious Goals?
scottditzen replied to LosAngelesZipFan's topic in Akron Zips Football
I voted 30-40,000. Fantastic idea RatFink to incorporate businesses and/or student housing into the design. Otherwise a football stadium is a tremendous waste of space (see Cleveland) and be vacant most of the time. Yeah the JAR is a high school gym, but a football/basketball facility would be too large for Zips B-ball. Too much of a leap there. Crowds would look sparce and you would lose homecrowd noise, feel, and intimacy (see Cleveland State). I strongly feel the on/near campus stadium should be unique, and reflect the storied history of Akron. Think red brick facade, brick streets, interesting architecture, a lot of character. A place that incorporates the legacy and important role that Ohio has had on the game of football. GO ZIPS!!!! -
Ken Lolla accepts job at Louisville
scottditzen replied to Johnny Utah's topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
Ouch. This is not good for Akron. I'm from Brick, NJ, the same town as him, and played soccer with his brother for years. He's always been a great guy. I wish he would've stayed a Zip.
