  1. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/football/...ferences/midam/I guess I shouldn't say talent cause there is talent on every team...I just think the MAC hasn't been as competitive as before. Some say it's the changing of the guards with the rise of OU, Central, NIU and Akron but man the conference didn't do so hot in bowl games last year. And if my memory serves correctly, were we the only MAC school to beat a BCS team? I remember that Central was close against Boston College (which was a great game for those that missed it). This conference as a whole needs to step it up...adding teams like Temple ain't gonna get it either. Why don't we schedule the bottom feeders of big conferences? It might not be as much money but it is more money. I think a win against an Indiana, Illinois, Vanderbilt, Ole Miss, Stanford, Washington, Syracuse etc. I would rather watch a competitive game we have a chance of winning than a blow out! I know it's all about the money but we all agree winning games puts butts in the seats. We all would like to see ourselves in a bigger conference. But it would make a better case if we consistently beat the conferences worst...i don't know maybe I am reaching just curious on what some of you think about that approach to building a winning program. There has got to be other ways of achieving success like Boise or Louisville. I refuse to believe the only way is to hope we get a great coach that just wants to stay in Akron.Realistically we may beat a BCS school out for 1 - 3 recruits but that just isn't enough to put you over that hump. I know some of you are probably sick of talking about this but I love my Zips and I pimp them every chance I get. When people ask me what hat I am wearing I look at them like they are crazy for not knowing.
  2. I'm going to disagree with the statement that "Akron fans have shown a willingness to travel in large numbers".Folks, that happened when we were playing for a championship. In general, we only have a small group of people going to most of our road games, unless its at Can't. This is a season opener, with no bearing at all on anything. I'm not foreseeing a fan response anything close to a MAC title game, or bowl game.
I was to chicken to say it but I think you are right sir. And last season was disappointing. People will sit at home and casually watch it on ESPN. Damn that pisses me off, I guess I am kinda jealous living here in Columbus I see the amount of fan support the buckeyes have and wish my zips had a 1/4 of that following. Sometimes I feel like it's just me and the family and friends I drag to the games.
  3. I hope the OL is better also.  And if it really is better, then I would have the following question....Was JD keeping his Senior OL's in the games late last season out of respect for them being Seniors and 3- years starters?  If so, then in my opinion he wasn't helping the team as much as he could.  Either that, or these freshman have developed VERY VERY quickly over the off season.
That's what you call "building a program", you build for the future if you know that it's not your year, I think JD knew last year wasn't going to be "their year" so they redshirted some players and let them get even better before putting them out there. That's how you get your program to grow and become stronger is by recruiting talent and then developing it before throwing them into the fire.Just my opinion, or at least that would be my strategy.
Man i hope you are right!!
  4. Pretty impressive, he looks like he has some good speed. And I love how he goes up and gets the ball at it's highest point, but i would like to see more Y.A.C. (yards after catch). It was a bunch of bombs being throw. I wanna see him catch a short pass and take it to the house. I would like to see more of his open field moves. The teams we play are not gonna allow our QB to sit back in the pocket all day and just launch the ball down field.

  5. I really don't know what conclusion you can draw from the Owens guys still competing for UA. You can say a lot of things, I guess. Everything doesn't need to be black/white. There's room for some gray too.You can say that Brookhart must be a decent coach and person if that many guys elected to stick with the program rather than quit or transfer. You can say Owens did a nice job of uncovering hidden talents who have made some undeniably solid contributions to the team. You could say that JD is simply very loyal to guys who've stuck with the program for 3-4 years and rewards them with playing time. The reason I posted the info was, because if you'd have told be 4 years ago that 40% of our 2007 starters would be from Owens' tenure, I'd have laughed. Good for Owens that he recruited some solid contributors...and did so when most everyone knew he had one season left at UA (Thomas wanted him gone a year prior). Good for JD to keep these guys in the fold and molding them into solid D1-A players. In the end, they're not "Owens Zips" or "JD's Zips," they Zips, period. :thumb:
First I wanna say that was right on couldn't of said it better. And secondly how can the program ever reach mid major status with all this shift and replacing of coaches? I think we need to find a guy that really wants to stay here like Keith Drambrot or Toledo's Coach Amstuz (i think). Cause I get the feeling 2 sucessfully seasons out of JD he's gone.
  6. Hey, with all of this WR depth and speed, wouldn't it be nice to see some 5-Receiver sets from time to time? I don't think anyone in the MAC would be prepared to defend such a situation. That would be nice. especially with a QB that has the ability to run the ball, we could run the QB draw out of that formation as well as alot of other plays.
Sometimes might be cool just to mix things up but, we are so deep at running back we need to have 2 on the field at a time. Especially if our O-line is as bad as we all suspect, the extra blocker in the backfield maybe absolutely necessary!
  7. When was the last time we beat Army?I think some of you think we are a little better than we are.You are talking about a true freshman, that hasn't even arrived yet, making a difference in a game.
This man speaks the truth...the potential in Hill may be there but it is not likely going to happen right away.
  8. Yeah I agree with Cap - I felt like we all deserve an answer but at the same time it could be an embarasing family issue, or worse he could be trying to transfer to a bigger college. He still has a redshirt year and 3 years of eligibility if he did chose so. As a coach, if I had a player like Harvey- grades would not be an issue cause I would keep close tabs on his report cards, knowing it could be detrimental to the team but more importantly my job!!

  9. I have spoken with many shop owners around the area that carry college gear. Several have told me that UA is not very easy to work with at all when it comes to licensing.
This is disconcerting...I hate having to track down Zips apparal in stores like a private detective. I don't want it to be as common as the cheap OSU crap you see even in Discount Drug Mart. But I would loveto just be able to walk into your typical sports store and buy some Roo gear. Having the mysteriousZips store in the JAR open sporadically is the dumbest marketing move ever.p.s. I don't mind the shirt having the dreaded Can't logo on it, I wouldn't wear it personally. Though I would buy it for someone if some money went toward Zips athletics. I just think it's cool to build up the rivalry and get as much mileage out of it as possible.
Man you definately feel my pain...I have resorted to only shopping online for "quality zips gear" cause nothing burns my ass more than when I drive 2 hours north, go to the jar and the damn store isn't open, for no good reason.
