  1. I have searched and found someone talking about SIU joining the MAC, about a 1/3 of the way down someone posted this....You have mentioned in several posts that YSU was recently extended an invitation to join the MAC, but was voted down by two members. You didn’t name them, but I believe you were referring to Can't and Akron, insinuating that those schools are worried about recruiting competition.sidenote someone postedMy memory is fuzzy on how Akron ended up in the MAC. But keep in mind: They weren't brought directly from I-AA.Akron made the move up, then and played four seasons as an independent before kicking off their first season in the MAC.If you look at the 1989 season, you will see the Zips went 3-0 against the MAC (Can't State, Bowling Green and Northern Illinois) and beat Cincinnati to boot. Gerry Faust was coach at the time, and there was a relative amount of excitement about the program.I'd argue they sort of forced their way in. MAC ADs probably ran out of bad things to say.But I don't really know.

  2. I made a comment about Ohio football..."Ohio State is playing for a national title, Youngstown St is in the semi finals, and so is Mount Union. The State of Ohio could have 3 national champs in football. I am willing to bet that all 3 team rosters are composed of atleast 50% or more Ohio players, yet when people mention where the best football is they say Florida, Texas, or California. Go Ohio!!!"And someone replied with..Why doesn't YSU go D-IA like Akron? Then someone replied with..in the late 90's YSU was going to make a jump to D1-A when Tressel was still there. they applied to join the MAC but Akron and Can't refused to allow them to join chosing Buffalo instead after that the push for D1 diedthen i replied with...How can 2 schools tell someone they can't come into the conference? Isn't that the job of the MAC commissioner, or conference board? :D:D

  3. Akron used to play Youngstown, I actually was apart of one of those teams. A Tessel coached team kicked our rears too!! I still don't know why you guys haven't decided to make that jump to Division 1A. Marshall, NIU, Akron, Middle Tenn, all have and all of them have been to bowl games. So on some level we all have had some success at the highest level of college football.

  4. Let's look at Brookhart's career here at Akron and compare him to his predecessor.Lee Owens:Has the worst facilities in the nation, no....not just 1-A, the NATION, and pulls three winning seasons in nine years, getting fired for a year in which he went 7-5 and 5-3 in the MAC one interception away from beating a top 25 team. I know there's some hatred for the guy on this forum but I think it's completely unwarranted. For the crap he was handed from the administration in terms of support and facilities I think he worked miracles.JD Brookhart:Steps right into the best on campus practice and training facilities in the MidWest and inherits a 7-5 team with one of the best 5th year senior QB's in the nation. Starts his career out 1-4 with a loss to a Sun Belt school, and three HUMILIATING blowouts, one to another MAC school. Gets on a hot streak against some weak competition in the middle of the schedule (Buffalo, UCF, Ohio, Can't, Ball St, and needed a Charlie Frye miracle to beat a bad Marshall team) and then closes out the year to lose to a down Miami team that was just good enough to win a bad MAC East that season. 6-5 with a team that I honestly believe would've won the East that year if Lee O/Paul Winters had stayed in charge and kept the momentum from '03. Has the so-called #1 recruiting class in the MAC heading into '05, which should be expected with the best facilities in the MAC, but in reality just signed a bunch of guys who would never get here anyways. Half that class is no longer with the team. Comes back in '05 and is proclaimed God of Akron after going 6-5, 5-3 in the MAC..... the same record Lee Owens was fired for. Is the beneficiery not of what his team did, but of what other team DIDN'T do, and backs into the MAC championship, and beats an NIU team on a last second prayer, an NIU team that didn't have it's starting quarterback. Loses the Bowl game to a mediocre Memphis team. Has a solid recruiting class, again, with what could be expected with the facilities and coming off a championship, but again, many don't qualify. Nevertheless, Akron enters 2006 as arguably the most talented team in the MAC, full of, not to keep stroking the guy's dick but, guys Lee Owens recruited with the most god-awful facilities and campus in college football. With that talented team, he drops an egg, and goes 5-7 in a DOWN year in the MAC.So you be the judge.....is JD Brookhart really that great of a coach, or just a guy who had limited success because he stepped into the right situation at the right time?? You be the judge. I'm not for firing the guy this year, but heads on his staff should roll, and I'm not as excited about that contract extension as some of you are.
you make some very good points! Hmmm interesting you make some damn good points!!
  5. If you would have told me at the pre-season of this year that this football team would end up 6 and 6 possible, or more likely 5 and 7. I would have laughed in your face. I would have pointed out how we have a verteran line, experienced QB and a great Defense. Not to mention Defending MAC champs, the is no place to go but up for this team and university. I thought the turning point for this team would have been the NC State win. But now outsiders looking in are gonna say that was a fluke!! This team has got to be the most frustrating team to watch EVER!!! It is one thing to not expect anything and lose, it is another to play a close game and lose, BUT to constantly have penalties, dropped balls bad passes, and an ass whipping by Can't is just too damn much to swallow.I still can't believe this is how a season with such promise is going to end. Well at least two things are for sure. We all can kill that noise about JD leaving early, and Getsy will not even get a try-out for the NFL.

  6. I think that such sightings have been few and far between because the Zips merchandise had been so f-ing shoddy for decades. It's tough to get placement anywhere when no one wants to wear your polyester clothing with 3-rd grade logos. The visibility of U of A logo'd things is exponentially higher than ever before. I see Zips stuff in airports, at Indians' games...and when I wear mine, people recognize it. A lot of that has to do with the football team's exposure last season.BTW - I noticed a lot of nice U of A gear on sale lately. Shirts that were $50.00 are now $25.00. Sweatshirts that were $60.00 are now $30.00. Is there another logo change on the horizon (is this a clearance sale?)? Has the sales volume of the old gear driven the price down? I'm curious.
i couldn't agree more...BTW i was wondering about the price drop as well, i figured it was because Christmas was on the way but your comments do raise an eyebrow.
  7. Actual attendance was no more than 2,000. At kickoff, there were only 1,000 in the seats excluding the band. Trust me on this. And yes, I'm sorry to report it................I sat by a recruit and was all over him to ignore the attendance.........I really built up the program, and I'm positive he and his coaches were satisfied and enthusiastic about UA with what I told them..............See..............this is the unreported downside of a BS schedule and underperformance.
Brotha i am sure I speak for everyone when I say we appreciate the effort, some people would have the nerve to do what you did. It seems like we are always on an uphill battle...I can't wait for the day it is Akron playing at home in front of 45K ranked #15 in the nation and upset a #3 opponent. I can only imagine what our ranking would have been had we won out since the N.C. State game. This schedule didn't do us any favor ( or we just don't play well away since those are our only loses but..) we still need to over come these things. We need 90% or more recruits to actually attend UA..AND PLAY!!I think we need better assistant coachesWe need a complete overhaul in special teamsWe need to play more consistentWe need less penaltiesWe need a new stadiumWe need more fan supportSo far the only thing we have taken off the list is signing JD's contract. let's knock off some more of these things before we have to add find new head coach to that list.
  8. No Offense but Frank "the Tank" Solich is pulling in 230k... and to be honest I think JD is a better coach than Solich. I still think the salary is low and after this stadium is built and we see more success it better be reworked or he'll be gone and fast.
If this is true then I was right in my assumption, JD should be making between $200 - $235. Especially if Frank Solich is making 220K, and he didn't win the conference, nor go to a bowl.
  9. 180K?!!!  Man there is a huge gap between MAC schools pay and Big Ten schools pay.  How in the world are we suppose to keep decent coaches?
What were you expecting? JD to be pulling in millions? Sorry to burst your bubble, but there SHOULD be a huge gap b/t coaches in the 2 leagues. The MAC doesn't really compare to Big Ten football, in talent, size, fan base, nothing. How would expect a coach at a school with an average fan base of 10k at a game to compete with schools that pool 100k+ to the game every week, not to mention national fan bases, apparel, etc. If a MAC were to pay their coaches even 500K a year, where would you expect that money to come from? Attendance, licensing apparel nationally, all that stuff gives money to a school in the Big Ten. Sorry, I was just a little shocked that you were so shocked by that number. That number for JD is after his 3rd year of coaching, with a Championship and bowl berth one year, and contentions the other 2 years. Imagine what a coach from a school like Buffalo makes, with this year being an improvement with 2 wins!
I know your right but I guess I didn't expect the gap to be THAT far away...I was expecting 220K-320K, if Tressel at OSU makes 1 Mill i was expecting a MAC school to make 75% less not 82% less
  10. "the only problem is that those #2 recruiting classes were based on the players we inked at the time. if you look now most of the top guys will never play a down for akron."You are 1000000% correct. Take away all of the players that will never play here, and the classes are average at best. Most people don't see that.
Oh we see it we just don't wanna admit it. I feel if you are gonna take chances on players like these you are gonna have to put in extra effort to keep them on the team. Ask yourself is the time wasted by a G.A. escorting a kid to class worth the return on the field? If the answer is no then don't sign him..if the answer is yes then take him.And i want to leave everyone with this final thought:"The need for a babysitter is dictated by mentality not age!!"
