http://sports.yahoo.com/ncaaf/news?slug=ap...p&type=lgnsSYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP)—Syracuse’s top receiver Mike Williams was suspended for academic reasons and is no longer enrolled at the school.Sue Edson, assistant athletics director for communications, said Tuesday that Williams was not enrolled. Coach Greg Robinson would not elaborate, citing privacy laws.Williams practiced with the team in the spring and completed the spring semester. He was entering his junior year.Williams, a second-team All-Big East Conference selection, had 10 touchdowns last season for the Orange (2-10).

Why isn't the OOC schedule fair? If JD can beat NC State he can beat Syracuse, if JD can be competitive with Penn State and Ohio State he can be competitive with Wisconsin. And I don't think Cinci will be as good as UConn since they will be breaking in a new QB. I think this year we will see improved QB play the question is how improved will it be. If it is marginal we will be under 500.
-
What......the......hell??????
-
OUCH! cold but true.....usually a QB's performance improves greatly from year 1 to year 2, let's hope we follow that trend.
-
Well looking at the schedule that could be a tall order of going 6-6 August 30 at No. 0 Wisconsin - picked to compete for Big 10 title so I'll say LSeptember 6 at Syracuse - very winnable game, this is a must win to be 6-6 or 7-5 WSeptember 13 Ball State - Nate Davis is back and he is a solid QB, LSeptember 20 at Army - This is be a repeat of last year W September 27 Cincinnati - The QB Mauk is NOT back, but still a tuff one LOctober 4 at Can't State - We always play bad there L October 11 Bowling Green - Repeat of last year only closer LOctober 18 at Eastern Michigan - This has got to be a win - W November 5 Toledo - based on their schedule they'll be beat up by the time they play us, plus we have 2 weeks to prepare W November 13 Buffalo - Are they still a cream puff? WNovember 22 at Ohio - Definitely going down - W November 28 at Temple - We should have beat them last year - WMy prediction is 7-5 JD stays, Lose to SU and he is 6-6 and he still probably stays, Normally we win one we shouldn't and lose one we shouldn't (see last years Western Mich and Miami OH) So this year I think it will be an Ugly win at SU and a ugly loss to Can't (hope i am wrong about that.) Wonderful season 9-3Personal expected season 7-5Anything less than 6-6 off with his head

Prep Schools and NCAA eligibility...
Ryno aka Menace replied to FromdaBurgh's topic in Akron Zips Basketball Recruiting
I know alot of people that sleep through the SAT or ACT the first time they take it and find out later how important it is a do better the second time around or maybe he contacted Sylvia learning center or just downloaded a copy of the test questions on the internet. Whatever the reason the truth will eventually see the light. -
Is a conference shake-up happening sooner than later?
Ryno aka Menace replied to ZachTheZip's topic in Akron Zips Football
If I had to rank the MAC teams that would be appealing to another conference I would say1.Toledo2.Miami3.Central4. AkronBased on history of winning and potential And for those of you jumping on Marshall saying it hasn't worked out for them I beg to differ, 1 they have only been in the conference for 3 years give them some time. 2. last year they were 3-9 and easily could have been 7-5 if you look at the schedule, 3. In 2006 they were 5-7 we were 5-7 but we all agree C-USA is a better conference. (to back that statement look at the number of bowl participants last year from the MAC and C-USA)To support the notion of jumping conference. Look at UConn, South Florida, Central Florida, all 3 jumped to the Big East with no prior indications that they would "compete" at the level they are. The Big East is a BCS conference, going to C-USA is to me a side step, it is a step up but a small one. Someone mentioned earlier no one will get excited to see us play UTEP, Rice, or Tulane.WHO you play effects recruiting, the number of fans that show up, and TV coverage. Some people on message boards were ripping ECU for whoring themselves out to get into the big east. But I see nothing but upside. Temple gets kicked out of the Big East but damn near wins our conference the first year in? That's disgraceful.Minnesota isn't competitive in the Big Ten but I saw them on TV more than the zips!! -

Hence the reason for my post in another thread...I know I will probably get flamed for this but sometimes I tihnk being in the MAC is just bad all the way around. They have in my opinion been a mediocre to poor conference since Akron joined. A way to even it up is for us to leave. I know we have had this discussion before but I think I would try the approach of going independent for say 5-6 years and schedule nothing but midmajors and bcs cupcakes toA. Build a winning programB. Go bowling every year Until we do A and B we will not look attractive to another conference I don't care about potential market cause all that means is more people will see the loss instead of the few thousand that show up to the game. -
Kind of funny that they think they are in the same league as the Bucks but if you don't want to be the best then you never will. http://bleacherreport.com/arti...Buckeyes-090508Brian Kelly Wants a Rivalry With Jim Tressel and the Ohio State BuckeyesOhio is Buckeyes territory, that goes without saying. But in one small section of the state, there is there is a place where the Buckeyes don't rule the roost anymore. That area is Cincinnati. With coach Brian Kelly and his Bearcats coming off a 10-3 record in 2007, he has some strong words for Jim Tressel and his Buckeyes. Is it the fact that Kelly was born and raised in Michigan? Most Ohio State fans would point that out, but I believe that it is Kelly wanting to change the fact that everyone in Ohio is a Buckeyes fan, and the Bearcats are an afterthought when it comes to college football in the state of Ohio. The idea was started when Ohio State wanted to back out of a game in Cincinnati in 2010, paying the Bearcats a reported $1 million to play in Columbus. Kelly was then asked by the media about Ohio State's backing out of the game in Cincinnati.Kelly said, "We're going to work very hard on this end to make sure we play Ohio State," Kelly said. "I want to play them annually."Later in the interview Kelly said he didn't care where he played Ohio State, even if it was in a parking lot in Xenia. Kelly apparently wants to start up a rivalry with the Buckeyes, and is showing that he and his players aren't afraid of the big bad Buckeyes. At UC's game in 2007 against UConn, the score of the Ohio State-Illinois game was announced by the PA announcer, and I heard something I didn't think I would ever hear; a large roar of 35,000 people in the state of Ohio cheering an Ohio State loss.So in Cincinnati, there is some bad blood against the Buckeyes. As Kelly begins to steal key recruits from Tressel and the Buckeyes, more and more tension will build up, and a rivalry may emerge that Tressel and the Buckeyes don't really want. Some of you might not see it but this is a good thing for Cinci!!

How to even up the MAC divisions
Ryno aka Menace replied to Zipmeister's topic in Akron Zips Football
Damn you do make a good point about drawing money from BB, it could be a nightmare or they could benefit as well. Everyone agrees that winning games is what it will take to keep attendance up. The "product on the field" well the flip side of that is how may people in North east ohio wanna see us beat up on teams like eastern michigan or would rather see us play a tough game against SEC, ACC or Big Ten cupcake at home. It's not just us....it is who we play as well. This is just my feeble attempt to solve a problem. -

I know we have had this discussion before but I think I would try the approach of going independent for say 5-6 years and schedule nothing but midmajors and bcs cupcakes to A. I mean the MAC (that I do like) will never be ranked higher than 9th best out of the 11 conferences. I just keep getting stuck on the fact that UConn, Cinci, UCF all are doing better than us and at one time those school couldn't hold a candle to us outside of Cinci maybe. Now Temple who got booted out the Big East and Buffalo another perenial doormat are both competitive in the MAC and you wouldn't be crazy if you said they could win their division. I know this is just a pipe dream but I just wanna see Akron at the very least the same status of a BYU, Boise, Fresno St.And I know some people will say look what jumping conferences did for Marshall, well just glancing at their schedule they could have easily been 7-5 and going bowling. They beat East Carolina that went bowling. Their conference had 6 teams go bowling. And that is before they add these new bowls. What do you think it will take for the MAC to have 6 teams bowling? -

Anyone can be replaced? Let's start with Jody Kest. She has lost my respect as a coach. I have NEVER heard of an entire team being asked -- or told - to leave a school, and that is basically what has happened here. How can this NOT reflect on the coach? Most of these players are her own recruits anyway. What does that say about her decision making and leadership? As those who have read my posts this past season know, I have a deep commitment to the UA WBB squad. Changes have to happen -- sooner rather than later.Well in Kest defense of recruiting all a coach has to go on when judging character is... 1. Film, how the act during competition2. What their high school coach says about the athlete3. What teachers say about the athlete - and most don't take it this far.Is that enough to judge a young persons character? Are those 2-3 things enough to know how a teenager is going to act when they are out from under mom and dad's roof, and roaming a college campus?I think the main thing everyone is missing is that she has the administrations support!!!! And a senior on the team said everything is spelled out in the rule book, so their is no excuse period!!! -
Wait a minute, can someone fill me in on what the argument is about? This story is BS to meShe has a full ride scholarship?1. which means she can register before other students for her classes2. she could take the class in the off-season3. Take the class in the summer. 4. Take the class her senior year after basketballIf it is truly that important to you it shouldn't matter when you take the class. as a student athlete she should also understand that you are going to have to juggle your responsibilities. We all know education comes first BUT..You sign a contract saying you will play a sport in return for a free education. Every class I have ever taken at The University of Akron has had more than one class offering, I find it hard to believe that between an athletic academic adviser, student, and coach they couldn't work this out!!!Come on if this was truly the reason you know how quick you would have a law suit on your hands?, man one visit to the dean's office and her butt would be in that class on Monday if it was the only offering. This isn't OSU were our student athletes are 3 years and gone, this is the UofA. We play our sport, make life long friends, graduate, and leave.I agree with ZW She is just a good example of our society today. It is always someone else's fault when a person can't do what they want to do. Hypothetically lets say it is just like she says AND there is no work around, at the very least take all the classes you can and hand them the bill so when you do leave you pay for 1 class instead of 1 year of college classes.I quote... My coaches (at Akron) weren’t really with that attitude that academics come first.” (Either they are or they aren't, what does she mean "not really?")To me this says I had a disbute and instead of sucking it up or working it out I quit and went somewhere else.quote #2I think West Virginia Wesleyan is a better fit as far as what I am getting academically,” Tokodi said. (how do you know you never took a class there)“Plus, I get the chance to play with my younger sister and that doesn’t happen very often at the collegiate level.” (If this is your reason then say so, don't blame the coach on your way out!

According to an article today in USA Today the NCAA will consider applications for three new bowl games later this month.Alas, I can't find a link to pass along --- I actually just read it in the paper. Remember when you had to do that? But the article said the three new games would be the Congressional Bowl, pitting Army or Navy against an ACC team in Washington D.C.; the imaginitavely-titled St. Petersburg Bowl (Big East vs. Conference USA) at Tropicana Field); and the Rocky Mountain Bowl (Mountain West vs. WAC at the University of Utah's stadium). That could bring the number of bowl games to 35 and make it nearly impossible to miss a bowl game as long as a team is qualified --- a .500 record is all that's needed. There were 32 bowl games last year and the article noted that seven bowl-eligible teams were left home and the NCAA will have to take into consideration if there's a danger in sanctioning too many games and running the risk of not having enough qualified teams. The NCAA will begin considering the issue April 29.

http://sports.yahoo.com/ncaaf/news?slug=ap...p&type=lgnsHONOLULU (AP)—The University of Hawaii will receive nearly $4.4 million for playing in the Sugar Bowl, a record payout to a non-Bowl Championship Series school.Hawaii is expected to net about $2.2 million after expenses associated with playing in the New Year’s Day game against Georgia, school and Western Athletic Conference officials said. The eight other conference members will each receive $410,555.Georgia, which beat Hawaii, 41-10, will earn $17 million for the Southeastern Conference, one of the six BCS leagues.New Hawaii athletics director Jim Donovan said the multimillion-dollar payoff is only part of the reward for Hawaii.“Our whole school and state benefited from the exposure leading up to and through that game,” Donovan told The Honolulu Advertiser.WAC commissioner Karl Benson said with the conference having teams in back-to-back years represented in BCS bowls “is a very strong statement about the WAC.”Boise State was paid about $4.3 million for its 2007 Fiesta Bowl win over Oklahoma. The eight other conference members will each receive $410,555.What did Akron receive from the 3 MAC Bowl Loses?? 20-30 Dollars?!?!

I understand what your saying and your right it's not a BIG deal but looking on facebook and seeing that the AKRON girls BB team is drinking or "drunk" in the off season doesn't reflect well on the university. People can point and say, see that is why they are and average at best team, they are partying when they should be practicing, trying to get better to make an NCAA tournament. What if your trying to recruit a player that doesn't drink, they might think they would be a social outcast if they see a majority of the team drinking.

so, er, if we are 3-2 with wins at Syracuse, Cincinnati, and Army, we have a top20 ranking? color me extremely skepticalIt is a long shot but with most of the big boys playing 1AA opening, and we are playing 3 bowl teams in the first 4 weeks of college football...it's possible notice I said "could be" not "would be".
-
Wow if we can win 3 outta 5 we could be looking at a top 20 ranking!SyracuseWisconsinKentuckyCinciArmy

Time?? And any football alum activities planned yet?

That is some major speculation. I don't think anyone should get their name dragged around without some proof. He might have changed for a million different reasons. At this point, I don't think it fair to assume that these two events have anything related. How is it major speculation? I didn't mention any names I am just saying that if I was the football coach at Massillon, and already had 1 coach fired for having sex with an under aged girl, then a high profile player of mine gets nailed for the same thing. And it is common knowledge that the police in massillon are still investigating these sex parties. I wouldn't want my name associated with that crap, I would look elsewhere for employment. You maybe right that there could be a million other reasons, but with all things considered I think it is a smart move.
