Of course not, the free market should set the price (capitalism). We just have to determine if we are players in the open market. If we are one of the most efficiently run U's in the US, we should be able to get some of those same smart people in a room to devise a plan to not lose great candidates due to money. There will always be a limit that we can't cross, that doesn't make economic sense, and I am sure "they" already have thought about this. If you want great talent, you typically have to pay for it, because their services are in demand. In the end, you get what you pay for, so the U had better get creative. Don't break the bank but pay the AD fairly to help establish a long, trusting relationship--and to make sure the AD's not lured away by a higher-paying job in 3 or 4 years.
