  1. What ZP and Jr. said.
  2. Where did all the haters come from?
  3. Very observant......check in later.
  4. Looks like the team is back at full strength after being a little shorthanded over the break. This one wasn't even close. Next up, the NCAA Sectional in Wisconsin, a good showing means a good shot (pun intended) at the NCAA Championship match! Note: The date in the article is incorrect, the actual date is Feb. 12th and 13th. Date: January 29, 2005 Location: Penn State University Event: Akron –vs- Penn State University & Loyola University Akron Rifle dominates Penn State and Loyola The Zips rifle squad traveled to State College PA to face off against the Penn State Nittany Lions and Loyola University. When the smoke cleared, the Zips managed to capture both first and second place team honors. With some recent amazing scores, Senior Co-Captain Joe Milano continued his winning streak by earning top match honors with his 580 out of a possible 600. Sarah Kramer (577), Angie Engle (569) and Laura Kuntz (567) rounded out the rest of the Gold squad which easily outpaced Penn State and Loyola. In the air rifle division, freshman sensation Stephanie Elmore posted one of her best scores of the year and won top match honors with her 575 out of a possible 600. Coach Engle thinks the jump in Elmore’s scores may be due in part to her recent acquisition of a new rifle, but Elmore gives the credit to chocolate milk. Either way, lead by Elmore, the both Zips air rifle teams did what needed to be done and finished ahead of the competition. The next two weeks will be a very important time for the Akron rifle team to prepare for the next match. The NCAA requires all teams who wish to via for an invitation to the NCAA Rifle Championships to compete in an NCAA qualifier macth. On February 19 or 20, at approved locations across the USA, these teams will compete for the invitation. “We have been shooting the best we have in years,†states coach Newt Engle, “But we all know the invitations will only go to the top 8 teams and we are close, VERY close. So we have to do just a little tweaking to insure we are at our best for this match.†To make their bid for the NCAA’s, the Zips will travel to The University of Wisconsin at Oshkosh. The qualifier match will be fired on February 19 starting at 9:00 am. 5. I really think Frye was due for this. I agree that with Dan O being out, he got more playing time. I killed me during the game when the announcers mentioned that Frye need to learn what to do when the pocket collapses around him and how he needed to work on throwing on the run. It was blatantly obvious these guys had never seen an Akron game. IMO, Frye was more successful than Orton because he did what he has done for the past few years, take care of the ball. When it wasn't there, he made a sure throw or took it down with him. Great showing for Frye and for Akron. Looks like he took a deal from Reebok, he had some of their apparel on during the Sunday show. He's a humble guy, I think he'll do great in the NFL!
  6. NICE! I like it! Are there others? Miami Marshall Toledo BG Bowling Green Ohio State
  7. I've never seen a sellout at the RB. I've been hoping to see one since my first game over 11 years ago. I was blown away with the Can't State crowd in '03 and blown away twice this season with MU and MU(O). There was a LOT of excitement this year with ESPN and the MAC East Championship. I think we have a hard time getting a sellout this next season. If we win, they will come, but we need to win for a few more years before we get an early season sellout. Can't State will be big again, but not a sellout. I do have one question though...if they build the new stadium, will they let me walk out with the bleachers I've been sitting on for the past 11 years after the last game?? Maybe I'll just start taking them out in pieces now.
  8. Apparently all those articles about him working late and sleeping in his office every night weren't true.....or were they? Sorry for taking this post down hilll....I couldn't resist.
  9. This might be out in left field....but maybe this is TP's way of getting us fired up? I think he probably comes over here to get the scoop on stuff and gets a little pissed when we bash the ABJ all the time. Just a thought.
  10. I don't post over here much, not really that interested in BB. But living in the vicinity of CMU, I thought this was a HUGE win for the Zips. Doesn't CMU have a really good program? They make is sound that way up here. I thought we would be hard pressed to win this game and it looks like we blew them away! I'll apologize for my lack of MAC BB knowledge, but is there a chance we could contend in the East? Were we underperforming under Hipshire? Does Dambrot simply have us playing at our potential or are we playing beyond it? Seems like we're winning a lot of MAC games, is the team getting better week to week? I guess I'll have to drop in over here more often. Wish the Zips played some games somewhere East of Lansing.
  11. Looks like the team is up to it's old tricks. Even though they still aren't at full strength (looks like Sarah Kramer and Shannon Kohatsu didn't make it) they put up some pretty good numbers. What is exciting is that there was another school record broken and some more personal bests. Lets hope this trend continues for the rest of the season. I expect to see the Zips to continue their Big Ten domination over Penn State in 2 weeks. The PSU team isn't a Varsity sport so expect the Zips to be handing out the spanking this time. Then it's on to the NCAA Sectionals in a month. This is where you qualify for the NCAA Championship. We've been so close in years past, I think this is the year. Date: January 16, 2005 Location: Palmyra Pennsylvania Event: 6th Annual Palmyra Invitational Milano Shatters School Rifle Record Giving up a few precious days of winter vacation, The University of Akron Rifle Team gathered in Akron to brave the cold tempers and travel to Palmyra Pennsylvania to compete in the nations largest indoor rifle tournament. This tournament has grown to the point that the matches must be fired over a three weekend period to accommodate all the competitors. This weekend was the first of the three weekends. The air outside may have been cold, the Zips warmed things up at the 6th annual Palmyra Invitational. In the smallbore division senior Co-Captain Joe Milano was on fire. Milano fired an 1169 out of a possible 1200 which shatters the old school record of 1164. In breaking the school record Milano posted two perfect 100’s in the prone position and a very impressive 99 on one of his last of 4 standing cards. Teammate junior Angie Engle finished second with a notable 1141 and freshmen Martha Carpenter (1131) and Christine Fortunato (1127), both posted new personal best scores. Worth noting is the prone performance of sophomore Laura Kuntz (1130) who captured the ever allusive 100 with 10 center shots. To do this an athlete must not only hit the center of the target 10 times, but the holes must be exactly in the center of the target earning the designation of “center shotâ€. Shooting a perfect 100 with 10 center shots is very rare and a HUGE accomplishment. Milano continued to set the pace by leading the team in air rifle with a 382 out of a possible 400. The freshman duo of Stephanie Elmore and Martha Carpenter backed up Milano with identical 378’s. And freshman April Engle sneaked into the top 4 for the first time this season with an new personal best score of 377. “We are blessed with a deep pool of talented athletes to count on but Joe Milano continues to lead the team with nearly a 4.0 gpa as well as regular record breaking athletic performances.†states coach Newt Engle, “Now Joe and the rest of the team will have to get to work to prepare for some upcoming tough teams as well as the all important NCAA qualifier in February.†The team results of the Palmyra invitational will be posted in approximately 3 weeks. Before then, the Zips will travel to PA again on the 29th of January to face an up and coming Penn State team. 12. I was suprised that Butchie didn't get a shot at the NFL.....more suprised the Zack didn't get in. I have to agree that if Nick didn't get Hurt, Frye would have been on the bench for a while. He got his shot and thankfully, made the most of it. I just hope that Getsy has Frye's 6th sense for when he's about to get creamed, can throw on the run, and takes care of the ball. I think that was what 5 was really outstanding at, he almost always made good decisions.
  13. The Zips squeaked by the Buckeyes in this last match. With the fact that they were missing essentially 1/2 of the "Gold" team and 1/2 of the "Blue" team, I am just happy they came away with a win. Smallbore was much closer than Air Rifle, but the Zips took both, continuing the streak over the Suckeyes. With more out of state shooters coming to UA every year, I wonder if this match will be moved to when school is in session next year. Date: January 8, 2005 Location: The Ohio State University Event: Akron –vs- The Ohio State University OSU Falls to Akron Rifle Several years ago Coach Newt Engle met with his team and discussed the possibility of a match to be held during the long winter break. The team felt this would be a good way to keep up their skills as well as provide something to do during break. Back then, the team was mostly all Ohio residents. Times have changed and this year 5 of Akron’s 16 athletes could attend the match. This combined with the ice storm which made the usual 2 hour trip to Columbus stretch into 3 would appear to stack the deck in favor of OSU. Undaunted and determined, the Akron athletes went to work and when the smoke cleared another win was in the record books for Akron. In smallbore, Firing an amazing 592, first place match honors went to OSU’s Ryan Kohatsu, (yes, brother of Akron’s Shannon Kohatsu). However, Akron Sophomore Laura Kuntz finished in second place and lit up the range with a great performance firing a 576 out of a possible 600. On the way to this team leading score, Kuntz entered the record books by firing a perfect 200 out of 200 in the prone position. Finishing in third with a solid 574, Akron team co-captain Joe Milano helped insure the smallbore victory. Air rifle started out similar to smallbore with OSU’s Ryan Kohatsu leading the pack and capturing first place honors with his 585 out of 600. Then came Akron’s finest with team co-captain Joe Milano and Junior Angie Engle tying for second place with impressive 572’s. “I am totally impressed with these athletes performanceâ€, stated coach Newt Engle, “Long trip on the ice, no practice for a month, many of our power players at home on break, and definitely the underdogs, these 5 athletes new what they had to do and simply knuckled down and did it. I am very proud of all of themâ€. Cutting their break short, the full Zips squad will muster in Akron and travel to Palmyra Pennsylvania to compete in the 5th Annual Palmyra Invitational on January 16th. This three weekend long match is the largest rifle match held in the US and will be a chance for Akron to go head to head with the finest athletes in the nation. 14. If I wasn't in Florida on 12/26, I would consider going to Tom Bowl.....It doesn't look like it's too far away.
  15. Though not nearly as many personal best scores were broken this week, the teams scores were still high enough to soundly defeat Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. RHIT has been on par with Akron over the past 10 or so years. It shows how much improvement has been made and how extremely deep the current team is to easily take 1 and 2 against Rose Hulman. The Buckeyes are next....keep up the good work! Date: December 4, 2004 Location: The University of Akron Event: Akron –vs- Rose Hulman Institute of Technology Rifle Team Wins Again Milano and Kramer lead the charge This weekend the Zips sharpshooters posted yet another win as they defeated the “Fighting Engineers†of Rose Hulman Institute of Technology from Terre Haute Indiana. In the smallbore division, senior team captain Joe Milano won high match honors and shot a new personal best score of 583 out of a possible 600. Second place individual was earned by Zips Sophomore Laura Kuntz who shattered her personal best with a very impressive 581. And Freshman Stephanie Elmore also fired a new personal best with her 576. Worth noting is the prone performance of Joe Milano and freshman Martha Carpenter who each fired a perfect 200 in the prone position. This will add their names to the list of persons who have tied the school record. “I was very impressed with Milano and Kuntz for breaking into the 580’s, states coach Newt Engle, “But I am also excited about our prone performance. We have been giving away way to many points in prone and seeing the 199’s and 200’s puts us right where we need to be.†With the air rifle, senior Sarah Kramer took first place by posting a 581 out of a possible 600. Second place went to Dan Cloutier of Rose with his 577. Third place was a two way tie between Zips freshmen Shannon Kohatsu and Martha Carpenter who each fired 573’s. “We had a few stellar moments with the air rifle’s but as a team we were actually a little flat,†states coach Engle, “As a team we need to not only get over the 2300 mark, but we need to stay there on a regular basis.†The Zips have now concluded the first half of the season and will start back in action in a scrimmage at OSU on January 8th. This traditional break match was started years ago to give the Ohio based members of both teams a chance to compete during break. The next regular season match will take place when the squad travels to Palmyra Pennsylvania to compete in the Palmyra Invitational on January 16th. 16. As you know, this is the premier location on the internet to get your latest and greatest Akron Rifle information. I suggest that we voice our concerns to the Suggestion Box first and I'll bug coach to see what he can do. Gozips.com feedback
  17. WOW! They tried to put Mack in my dorm room my Freshman year! I think he quickly put an end to that. I don't think having an Engineer, an Accoutant, and a Crimial Justice Major as roomates was very appealing to him. We were a wild bunch I tell you
  18. I think the Out of State Zips fans out number the In State Zips fans on this board. I am concerned now though. I thought my self proclaimed title of "The biggest Zips fan in Michigan" was secure but apparently now I have competition. Welcome aboard DTMZF.
  19. I really think that this game is an excellent example of how college football isn't really a game between college students. Back in '96, when we had Virginia Tech Beat at the Rubber Bowl, I couldn't believe my eyes when we lost. One of my buddies who was at the game turned to me and said "Do you actually think that they were going to let VT lose to one of the worst teams in the Country?" I think VT was ranked 15th at the time. I really believe that some serious money exchanged hands somewhere to put VT on top in that game. I think we saw the same kind of thing here. IMO, if Akron went to Hawaii, it would have killed the Aloha bowl. Seriously, how many Akron fans were at UCF? I'm a huge fan but even if I didn't already have a vacation booked, I wouldn't pay an arm and a leg to Hawaii, I can't swing that. There were too many people with a lot of money caught up in the Aloha bowl to let Akron go. Despite the outcome, I am not heart broken. If we were like Toledo a few years ago, top 25 and sitting at home, then I would be pissed. We had a great season, JD really did an outstanding job with the team and I'll miss seeing Frye play. Unfortunately we'll be on the wrong end of the VT, TD Travis, deal until we're expect to win. I don't care too much for Basketball anymore so outside of Rifle updates, like the Signiture says, I'll be going away for a while. Great year, Go Zips!
  20. For some reason I couldn't get on the site for till now. Basically it's 1/2 through the 4th, 34-31 Hawaii and to sum up the game, the Refs are so amazingly against MSU, I can't even describe it. At one point MSU had 12 penalties and Hawaii had 0. I'm listening to the game here in Michigan and the announcers are resigned to the fact that the WAC Refs are doing everything they can to make sure that Hawaii gets to the bowl. Folks, I think this might be another case of the powers that be making sure a specific team wins. This just makes me
  21. I think this is a valid statement. I don't care for Michigan (the state) much, but the Job kicks @$$. We'll be out of here, hopefully back near Akron in a few years. As for Michigan the school, they kick @$$ too!
  22. I'm having a viewing party here in Michigan. Should be a great turnout too, lots of fellow Spartan fans when we got to BW3 tonight....but Mrs. Rifle and I will be the only ones wearing our Zips gear. Go State!
