To be totally honest. I would prefer Paul Winters over most of the available coaches.
-
I am no legal beagle. That said: Here in Ohio the reasons for either the DJ or the bar pressing charges would be for damages such as broken furniture, medical expenses. The police file charges such as disorderly conduct, public intoxication, resisting arrest, underage drinking. Unfortunately, according to the news report they did file charges. Hopefully all of this comes out as minor issues. For me, and why I am upset with Tree is because he put himself in harms way by being where he did not belong. Is he allowed to go to a bar? Yes, of course, legally. But, that right is offset when he becomes a member of the men's basketball team. Then he voluntarily puts himself under the rules set down by the NCAA, the University and coach Dambrot. The best outcome for all of us and Tree is a short suspension and a great career.

Paul Winters is 33-13 in the past 4 seasons, 19-5 in his last two, and currently competing for the national championship. If that's mediocre, I'll take mediocre. Compare that to Shane Montgomery's recent coaching records and you'll see the absurdity of the statement. I'm not supporting Shane Montgomery as our next coach. Just pointing out that he has two divisional titles at a D1-A school as a head coach. But, I also won't take your suggestion here and judge Winters tenure at Wayne by conveniently selecting the best few years, while ignoring the rest. I could probably make a case for just about any coach by utilizing that formula. So when you buy a car, all you look at is the price then?? Look, when PW took over the WSU program, they were at a historical low point in terms of winning percentage, having a losing record for almost a decade. He was rebuilding the program which is why his overall record is not that good. Any coach here would have the same job ahead of him. So, if anything, what he has done at WSU should be encouraging as ANY coach who is here next year will have a similar low winning percentage the first few years. A record of 33-13 is not a poor record. It is a really good record. When you factor in where Wayne State was at when coach Winters took over the program it is a remarkable record. This is a major reason why he needs to be considered for the open Akron job. Can Akron fans take a slow rebuilding process without taking Winters to task?

Only on the Internet. Are they still paying Terry Pluto?

Good idea. Let Cleveland media determine what the Zips need. They did such a grand job with Charlie Frye. By all means, Paul Winters has earned a shot at being a candidate. I would love to hear his vision of Akron football future. Me, I am greedy. I want Akron football and the rest of the sports to make the jump to a much better conference. It is difficult to accept the idea that Terry Pluto gives a damn about Akron. After all, he bailed.

Hey, DUMMY, underage drinking and breaking team curfew do make you a bad guy. The media had nothing to do with it. You managed this screw up entirely on your own. What kind of company do you keep? Bums? Thugs? Druggies? You are STUPID. You betrayed the trust of a lot of people who had faith in you. Now clean up your act and get back to being a Zip basketball player. The rest of you, stop kissing this idiot's butt. Are you serious? Sure, I am serious. I have grown children. I know what kids do. Mine weren't perfect either. And, I do know Tree well enough to speak frankly to him. I want him to grow up and be a fine person in the community. As for kissing his butt; read the posts. All I am asking of Tree is to "man up". A member of the basketball team has zero business being in a club at two in the morning. He was suppose to be in bed in his room. He violated the coaching staff's trust. Get it? I'm sure you'd call him a dummy to his face... Listen, we're all disappointed...he screwed up and it's terrible press for the program. I don't think that gives you the right to call one of our players a "dummy" or "stupid", or to claim he's hanging out with druggies or thugs (which, by the way, I don't think you'd say if this was, say, Josh Egner.) Let's not let your emotions get the best of you here. First, off, I think I could tell Tree that he is a "dummy". I like him like a son and he knows that I have his personal best interest at heart. I am a bit surprised how defensive and personal people are taking this. I have several concerns about Tree's actions affecting the rest of the team. By suspending Treadwell the coaches have to move Harney to the back up power forward. This moves Diggs into the three or small forward. A position a lot of you enjoy watching him play. BUT, it robs Quincey of time on the point. Quincey would love to play in the NBA. And the coaches are working to help him get there. Some one please explain to me just how Quincey makes it in the NBA as a small forward. His best shot is at the point. He has most of the tools. Right now he is short on ball handling and reading the floor. Each half he played he got better as a point guard. Certainly better enough to let him play more minutes on the point. Tree is our best person at the power forward behind Cvetinovic. He has the wonderful opportunity to play that spot for the next four years (mostly as the starter). Throwing that away is stupid. Tree is suppose to be a young man; not a small child. I hope he realizes the difference more than some of you posters do.

KUDOs to Erin and anyone else who helped organizing the trip. I think we fail to recognize our support staff nearly enough. I want to give a special thanks to Anthony Henderson and Robb Huerer for staying with me, in the rain, for 90 minutes waiting on a tow truck afteer our return from WVa.

Some of the men's basketball coaching staff attended Phil McKnight's funeral in Lancaster, Ohio today. Do not know if Tom Wistrcill was with them. God bless Phil McKnight. You and I have lost a great friend and Akron fan.

I saw it. Channel 3 used nice graphics and a short video of coach Tressel. They used an article from the Canton Repository as their source that coach Tressel is not going to coach again.

Best of success to the classy, talented Paul Winters.

The prime factor in selecting a new head coach is ... Where do the leaders of the U of A community desire the program to go? If the goal is to flounder along in the MAC and continue to take lumps, by all means hire a low cost coach that will give you just that. Just be prepared to spend years lingering at or near the bottom. This is not Jim Tressel. If the goal is to excel in the MAC, then you need a coach that can right the program quickly and take it to championship level. BTW, this supposedly has been the stated goal for several years. This is not Jim Tressel. If the goal of the leaders has vision and foresees moving on, preferably up, then the new coach has to bring to the table the ability and knowledge to make this move. This is Jim Tressel.

Isn't this fun? So many opinions. So few facts. One man's name comes to mind. Jerry Tarkanian. He beat the NCAA at their own game. Took them to court and kept them there for five years. Then, when he retired let the NCAA sanction him as he walked off the stage. Can the University of Akron learn from UNLV and the other fabulous Mr. T?

The Ladies suffer from their old time nemesis ...namely turnovers.

You run with what you have. Akron played without their top point guard. And, the back up point guard is hobbled with a hip injury. Basically Akron ran without a point guard. McClanahan had the most point guard like stats for the Zips. Forget an early season RPI. It means squat. Akron held the number one RPI after beating Mississippi State. Do not put stock in trash numbers. Detroit is actually a pretty good team. They have a lot of talent. I will give Detroit credit because it is due. They will contend in the Horizon. As Zips fan, I will always prop for my team.

A little update on (7-1) Mississippi State. Since losing to Akron the Pups have reeled off six straight victories. Granted, four of them were at home against opponents Akron would be ashamed to schedule. But, they did beat two top 25 teams at Madison Square Garden in the 2K Coaches Classic. Next Saturday (Dec 3rd) MSU takes on the West Virginia Mountaineers (at home). But, on Dec. 17th they travel to Detroit, MI to play at Detroit Mercy. It is a small world.

Virginia Commonwealth just lost a hard fought road game at #13 Alabama. While VCU has not opened many eyes up to tonight; they sure did tonight. VCU led this game most of the way. Not until Alabama stiffened their defense did the Tide take control of the game late. Shaka will have VCU ready when they roll into Akron.

Hopefully long enough for Deji to get some good playing time. He can only get better. When did we change our goal from winning games to developing players? Do we also hope that Zeke gets suspended so that Josh gets more PT? Great observation. Alex will be suspended at least through the West Virginia game. What ever he did or did not do is not our business unless it is a felony.

And an innocent child has wisdom. Blessed be the innocent.

Jim Dennison on the search committee? What are you smoking? Do some research into his relationship with the University before making such a remark. It is not creditable. Oh, they are going to recommend that the University hire Paul Winters to be the next head football coach. Right? Some one has consumed too many Pop-Tarts today.
-
The Zips took it in the shorts at Valparaiso and immediately the naysayers jump up to tell us how bad the Zips suck. Never mind the through beat down of a quality Detroit Mercy team. This is late November not late February. Give the kids a chance. Faint praise from a thoroughly disgusted coach McCallum. To him, Akron is a so-so MAC team. Hey, coach McCallum look at the scoreboard, you, your over rated son and the Titans got embarrassed by a team you were suppose to beat.
-
He knows the MAC and has won in the MAC. The experience at Kansas only helps him. I would certainly consider him. So would I. He won at Buffalo. Enough said. Turner Gill failed to win at Kansas. Enough said.

Sigh, such squabbling. People, do the math. There is absolutely no reason to hire Jim Tressel unless.... Go ahead hire poor Paul winters. A really nice guy who has slogged through years of pathetic Division two football. Paul has done a good job and deserves to be rewarded with a better job. Hire him. In four years he will elevate your Zips to the middle of the pack in the MAC. That is, if, and only if he can get his one and two star recruits to play their hearts out for him. He just might. Better still, hire Luke Fickell, if he will come. Get Luke to leave the comfort of Ohio State. The money is good. He has a family to raise. Luke is a genuinely nice man. He is much admired, even in here in Akron. Frankly, Luke can probably recruit well enough to have Akron playing for a MAC championship in four to five years. Good stuff. But, the much maligned and distasteful Jim Tressel ... now why would he even consider such a cow town bunch of hill jerks as the rubber rat city? I will tell you why. He has vision and a plan. He has a goal. IS there no reason to bring in Tressel and the high dollar he would command? Some say well over a million dollars. Now what MAC school pays its football coach any where near a million dollars. Why, none, of course. And neither would Akron. The only practical reason to pay Tressel's high price would be if he is set on the course of taking your Zips to a new, bigger, far more important conference. Now, why is it that no one even considers this? How long do you think it will take the University to apply for admission to the Big East after the ink is dry on Tressel's contract? Less than a week? Less than a day? Forty minutes? How many of you are even aware that right now plans are being developed to build a new arena? No, not a revamp of the trusty JAR, but a real brand new arena? Oh, few know this. But, its under way. This is not talk or speculation, but actual plans along with how to finance it. Darn, said too much already. No, folks, the only reason to hire Jim Tressel and his flock of four star recruits would be to compete in the BCS as a member of the Big East. Forget him. Start your petition to fall back to the OAC where Mount Union rules and Equins can snicker at you day and night.
