Paul Winters Doesn't Want to Win at Akron
xu9697 replied to NanNewWin's topic in Akron Zips Football
And that is your and his belief (or at least yours). I have no idea if he was giving "token" interviews. If that is the case, then others above TW need to be questioned as well (and yes, that includes Proenza). If you can change the past, please do it. The past sucked. If you can't change the past, then please move forward. There's hope for the future. Unfortunatley, I can't change the past. I am NOT the NCAA!!! -
Obviously, Winters comments could be spun MANY ways. But certainly, there is the chance that he is one of those guys that is comfortable in what he has built and wants to continue to see it through. 2 local examples are Larry Kehres at Mount Union and Chuck Kyle at Saint Ignatius. Those are guys that had MANY opportunities to leave and got to higher profile, higher paying jobs. But they love where they are, the situation they are in, etc. I hope TW sits down with him and says early in the interview, "Paul= I f'd up. You should have been our coach 2 years ago and I screwed it up. Luckily, my boss is giving me a 2nd chance."

Pass. I watched a Div II game one time because I heard Steve McNair was NFL talent. But I want to see talent for my time. And you've sat through Zips games for the past two seasons? I guarantee you'll see more guys tomorrow morning who will be in NFL camps than you saw all year playing for our Blue and Gold. Sad but true fact. Winters has two guys this year, the safety and the wide-out, who are projected to either be drafted or high priority free agents. He had a couple guys in NFL camps last year. He put a RB in the NFL two years ago. More talent than we've had come through here recently. I believe Joe Long, Jake Long's brother, is also a potential mid-round pick.

Twitter Tom passed on every available coach in the nation when he selected Iannello. By your logic, we shouldn't consider any of those 100+ coaches because...well...we didn't select them 2 years ago. Obviously, TT had no clue what he was doing 2 years ago and shanked his first tee shot deep into the woods. Just thank the Lord that that drive was so aggregious that he was given a mulligan. What in the world are you talking about? That is not my logic at all. He didn't INTERVIEW 100 guys 2 years ago. He interviewed this guy 2 years ago. He didn't deem him good enough for the job. I would like to know why HE thinks he is good enough now. Some guys you hit on, some guys you miss on. As an example= Gene DeFillipo at BC hit on Jeff Jagodzinski a few years ago= 2 ACC Championship appearances in 2 years. He then flies off the handle, fires that guy b/c he wants to better himself (interviewd for Jets HC job) and hires a guy that he passed over 2 years before...and the ship continues to sink at BC b/c of this hire. Not saying I think that will happen here, but that is what BC did= they went with a loyal guy, safe pick, bleed maroon and gold...and passed over MANY candidates who wanted the job (Mike London of UVA for one). He has NEVER answered the question= what made Frank Spaziani the right pick 2 years after passing over him. So, in this case, I would like to hear TW's answer. -

I would have to say that Winters needed a better track record. Paul went 6-5 in 2009 after an eight win 2008. I can see how he looked past him. Not sure what digging up the past will do to help anything at this point..... Might tell us a bit more about TW and his competency. I think we already know about that. I'm more interested in the future than digging up the past. But I'm not 100% sure it IS about digging up the past. Maybe the question could be worded better than I originally submitted, but I want to know why he is the right guy NOW when he was not 2 years ago. What are you seeing NOW in him that you did not see before. Is it "simply" just that he has taken them to these heights this year? If it is, I'm not saying that is a bad thing. It is addressing the now while at least being cognizant of the VERY RECENT past. -

I really hope, if PW is the hire, that someone asks TW why Winters was right this time but not 2 years ago. Was it just that he needed to see more of him? Was Winters #2 in 2009, but, again, he needed a better track record? I also hope that someone asks him if PW was the favorite all along and, even with that, did you (TW) interview and speak with many candidates? Did you talk to Tressel to find out about certain guys, or to ask more about the jump from I-AA to I-A (at the time) and compare it to DII to FBS (MAC) jump? I know the easy answer is just to say TW does not know what he is doing. Honestly, I don't know enough about all that goes into this to say that or not. He certainly struck out on 3 pitches with the first hire. If no one asks him this in a presser, you can bet I will be sending these to "Ask the AD". -
ZTZ or whoever...is this our current up-to-date as far as we know list?: Committed to Akron: ATH Daryan Martin, Princeton HS QB Steve Franco, Tyrone Area HS FS Benny Cunningham, Medina HS WR Elijah St. Hilaire, Palisades Park HS OL Rodney Carroll, Hargrave Military Academy JUCO CB D.Q. Johnson, Iowa Western C.C. S DeAndre Scott, Hargrave Military Academy I thought somewhere there was mention of 9 committed, but based on a quick look this appears to be the most accurate list (thanks for all the work here, ZTZ).

This guy looks to pass the eyeball test (from his one picture here). If we don't bring in some serious JUCO DT's we're going to get absolutely obliterated straight up the middle next year. The only 2 remaining DT's on our roster are both freshmen!!! Frosh DT Dajour Morris looked good. IMHO he passes the eyeball test. James Price, however, IMHO, didn't pass the eyeball test. He just looked kinda overweight. Who knows, he might hit the weightroom hard this offseason & lose some baby fat. But none-the-less, we need some serious muscle front & center. Maybe we can take some of our excess from the OL and plug them into the DL. Oh wait...

Right on, g-mann. That quote says EVERYTHING. "When teams in your own league are beating you by 40, 50 and 60 points, it's a talent issue, pure and simple," Winters said. Boy, are we living that nightmare.

To get things going in another direction (and I have no idea what GoZips said), I wonder if a guy like Phillip Fulmer would be the unidentified candidate. He supposedly wanted in and wante to go to Kansas. This would be a very "Frank Solich" type hire. I HIGHLY doubt it would be Fulmer, but I have seen rumblings over the last couple years about how much he wants back in...at some point, maybe he looks at just about ANY FBS type job to get back in the game.
-
Yeah..ITZ had a great post there. But I do hope they are doing their due diligence in actually INTERVIEWING other candidates. Even though it delays our hire another week...I hope Winters and Wayne State get that championship. For him, for the chance to SEE them in the game (and begin scouting him), for those players that believed and for what it will look like on the resume if he is the hire. Certainly might resonate with more of the skeptics (ZNO or NON-ZNO) to get the DII National Champ coach.

Just looking over what we DO have (and this assumes they stay...and assumes they have not left already and I don't know about it!!) Chisholm is a nice back, and I am pretty confident he could work in any system. Our WRs are young and have some promise. If we bring in a spread offense...Rossi would look nice at the OLB next to Wagner. He is just a football player! QB= don't count out D'Orazio, especially if we go with a spread that is more like RichRod (run) vs. Mike Leach (pass). Or, and I have thought this from the couple times I watched him in HS..he could be moved to S and with him, Wagner and Rossi we begin to have a nice mix there. The lines are the concern..I think we lose 5 of our top 10 on Oline and 5 of 8 on Dline. We are going to need JUCOs there if we expect to have any chance to win more than 1-2 games. I don't think we can make a really informed win prediction until we see the coaching staff, the recruiting class (and by that, I mostly mean any 1 year transfers and JUCOs we might get that can help immediately), and who is left on the roster come spring. I think 1 to 5 wins is a reasonable range for predicting..if one were to predict.

Honestly, if that were to happen (and I don't see it happening with Memphis and UMass), my guess is the Atlantic 10 would move swiftly in adding Butler, then look to maybe Cleveland State, Detroit, Iona, Siena, etc. The MAC, sadly, needs Temple and UMass in football much more than those schools need the MAC for basketball. I would love to see it happen b/c, in the end, it would benefit the MAC and the A10.

I like the resume. 1. mac experience so he knows how hard it is to win in the mac. 2. Good experiece in the midwest 3. Coached with winning teams 4. Offense, offense, offense wins games in the mac and puts people in seats. 5. Looks like the under the radar guy I would like to see Again, bringing in good candidates makes for a good decision. It's like going to a party and all 20 girls there are good looking. If you pick one up, you couldn't make a bad decision. I want a guy with more experience AND with HC experience. Look, 9 years ago the guy was a graduate assistant, Now you want him as HC? Fickell was HC at OSU 11 years after being a grad assistant (and NEVER being a 100% coordinator)...granted, under "odd" circumstances. But many wanted him here 2 years ago. Chris Peterson was the freshmen coach (yeah, freshmen coach) at UC Davis 9 years before becoming head coach at Boise. Dabo Swinney became Asst HC at Clemson 8 years after being a GA for 3 years. Those may not be the norm, but those are 3 younger heach coaches that I quickly looked up to see where they would fit in comparison. Not even saying this guy should be the guy. Just the TYPE of guy UA should be looking at in their national search. I get wanting experienc and HC experience. You are limiting the field a LOT for realistic guys coming to UA then, IMHO. Winters and Gill are a couple that come to mind.
-
I hope UA is looking at Mike Bajakian: http://www.gobearcats.com/sports/m-footbl/...ian_mike00.html I really like his resume and the diversity in it. He is still young, but has had many different experiences. Offensive minded, former QB. He has coached in Michigan and Ohio (mostly) and is from the East. So he has potential contacts in areas where we should be concentrating our recruiting efforts. He has experience in the MAC, is already in Ohio (unlike the thought of plucking guys from California or what not) and has led successful offenses over the last few years as OC.
-
NO. The next coach MUST have been, at the very least, an OC or DC in Division 1. No no no!!!!
-
If he really had roots here, I could buy it (like a Solich). I just don't see a guy that was born in LA and is almost 60 coming to Akron for his "retirement". I see Hill landing at a PAC 12 school in a coordinator or position coach type role. Should Tommy W call him? Heck yeah. That would constitute a NATIONAL search!!!!
-
http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/...ccording-source Not saying I wanted him, but this sounds nice: FAU believes Pelini, the brother of Nebraska head coach Bo Pelini, will bring discipline and organization, solid defense and effective recruiting. FAU is likely to employ a spread-based, up-tempo offense.

A couple on here have alluded to how Campbell is not going to put butts in the seats. Guess what: very few of the names mentioned are going to flood the seats on day 1. Tressel obviously would have. A name like Zook, Bowden, Stoops would probably get a few more butts in seats for game 1. But, in reality, EXCITING FOOTBALL with SOME wins will get butts in seats...continuous WINNING football will KEEP butts in seats. My guess is, even if the name appeals to many ZNO posters (like a Winters), it is not going to be a name that draws people in by the busload until excitement and winning begins.

Just heard of Campbell today. As a realistic target, I am intrigued: Matt Campbell (32, Ohio): In his second season as the offensive coordinator under Tim Beckman at Toledo. Campbell has also coached the Rockets’ offensive line since Beckman took over the program in 2009. A 2002 graduate of Mount Union, Campbell was a member of five national championship teams as a coach and player for the Purple Raiders. He was a two-time first-team All-American and was voted as the Ohio Athletic Conference’s Best Defensive Lineman in 2001 and 2002. Campbell joined Gregg Brandon’s staff as a graduate assistant at Bowling Green from 2003-04 when Beckman was still working as the defensive coordinator. He spent two years as the offensive coordinator and offensive line coach at Mount Union before returning to coach the offensive line at Bowling Green in 2006. He is a native of Massillon Ohio. “Matt Campbell is a coach’s son who has grown up around football all his life,” Beckman said when he hired Campbell as his offensive coordinator. “In my opinion, he’s the best recruiter in the Mid-American Conference. But his knowledge of the offensive schemes we want to run here was the first reason I offered him the position.” FROM: http://theozone.net/football/2011/MeyerHir...sibilities.html

Tressel will be the next coach of the Indianapolis Colts.

I think it deserves it's own thread. Coach Ianallo's mother has passed: http://www.ohio.com/sports/mother-of-ua-fo...friday-1.246923 I know very few of us are happy with Ianallo as a coach...and many of us do not like a lot about Ianallo and how he has handled his time so far at UA. But the loss of one of those people that uncondtionally loves you is a tough one. Coach Ianallo: wishing you and your family strength in this time of loss.
