  1. I am not sure if D'Orazio is REALLY in the conversation, but I do think Moore and Nicely should both get snaps during the OSU game (unless one CLEARLY outplays the other in Fall camp). I know OSU is going to be down, and yes it would be great to come up with a win...but I think we need to realistically use this game as a chance to see both QBs against Big 10 competition.
  2. $500k gets Stadium naming rights thru 2031. $395k gets Field naming rights thru 2017? Perhaps they cut them a deal on the naming rights due to their apparent help with additional improvements? Or is the $500,000 what is being used towards the improvement? If so....yeah, Cub Cadet lost out there. I would still think that FirstEnergy got a better deal b/c of longstanding relationship and all the other things they do for UA.
  3. Seems to me like the renovations that are going on will be a selling point for building a downtown arena (or it at least could be spun that way). "We have beautiful meeting rooms, video rooms and practice court at the JAR...which is a very close proximity to our student-athletes. We have recently sunk a good deal of $$$ into these areas and feel they are a huge asset to our program. However, we also feel that the arena itself is not conducive to where our program is and where it is headed. We felt that a downtown location..."
  4. Starting SF or 6th man..Quincy is going to get big minutes. I could really care less whether he starts ot not. Plenty of college, and some pro, teams do not start their best 5 players. Always more about the minutes and who is in there at the end of a game.
  5. Michigan played quite a bit with 4 guards and 1 big..and, actually, 5 guards at times. I think this year might be a year where KD actually gives big minutes to 4 guys= Zeke, Nik, Abreu and Q. Foul trouble will definitely affect some of that, but I think these 4 will be on the floor a great deal this year.
  6. University of Akron to offer classes in Lakewood LAKEWOOD, Ohio -- The University of Akron will open a satellite facility in Lakewood this fall. University trustees on Wednesday agreed to lease about 11,000 square feet on the first floor of Bailey Building at Warren Road and Detroit Avenue. Initially, education and nursing courses will be offered, with Lakewood Hospital serving as a teaching hospital, said Holly Harris Bane, UA's associate vice president for strategic initiatives and engagement. 7. Don't think Carter will get drafted, but could possibly make a team on ST.
  8. I love it how peope on this forum rip on the Buckeyes at every opportunity they can. It's hard to find something positive to say about the Zips so they resort to ripping the Buckeyes. It' actually pretty sad. Screw the Buckeyes...i enjoy every moment they fail, almost as much as I enjoy when Can't fails (which happens a lot, yet never gets old ). What is wrong with that? Now i get the whole overdoing it on the Buckeyes thing (and please let's not start that again), but honestly, OF COURSE people are going to rip on another in-state team that might as well be considered a rival, that's what fan forums are for! I guess not all of us are sick and tired of having them shoved down our throats by sports fans who are compensating for their pro teams sucking sewer water by gang banging on a team 150 miles away. I understand it from OSU alum, by all means. But most of these people never sniffed a college classroom... Do you think that is unique in Ohio? Michigan, Tenneseee, West Virginia, Penn State,...the list goes on and on. I really don't care who likes and who hates OSU on this forum or any other forum. But I laugh at those who talk about rooting for OSU but not going there as some sort of big deal. Every state has their "flagship university" when it comes to sports. Way of the world.
  9. What are the chances that an incoming QB would be promised the starting position over a veteran without having seen the incoming QB take a snap at the DI level or how much the veteran may have improved over the off-season? I'm not picking on you, but how familiar are you with the recruiting process? I never said "PROMISED". Let me put it another way.... You're a big time high school QB with state titles under your belt, were recruited by a number of big programs, and you just tore up JC for a year. Then, one of the worst D-1A schools in the country comes calling, and tells you that if you come to this horrible program, you might also have the additional priviledge of sitting on the bench behind one of the worst QBs in D-1A. Would you go there? Think about it. Ha, ha. I'm not concerned about being picked on by anyone on ZN.O. I already have an all-star squad of pickers in my wife and her six sisters. Anyone here who wants to join that team will definitely not be promised a starting position, but will have to earn it. But seriously, there are only three basic options on what to tell an incoming recruit about his chances of becoming the starter at his position ahead of a returning veteran: 1. Promise him he's going to play ahead of the incumbent. 2. Tell him he's definitely going to sit on the bench behind the incumbent. 3. Tell him if he wants the starting position, he is going to have to earn it by outperforming the incumbent. Now there are many ways to go about stating option #3. I'm assuming the Zips coaching staff did it the smart and classy way -- something like this: As you can see from our recent record, Mr. Recruit, the UA football team has not been performing at a high level. UA has made a strong commitment to reverse that by investing in the best football facilities in the MAC and bringing in a new coaching staff to turn things around. When you go 1-11, you have to look at all options to improve the team. No returning player is guaranteed a starting spot. Every new player joining the Zips will have a fair chance to prove they should be a starter at their position. As a QB with aspirations to someday play in the NFL, you'll be pleased to note that we've now gone to the pro set. This will give our QBs an opportunity to showcase their abilities in an NFL-style offense. The NFL is well aware that the MAC is a good conference for future pro QBs, thanks to former MAC QBs like Ben Roethlisberger, Byron Leftwich, Chad Pennington, Bruce Gradkowski, Charlie Batch, Omar Jacobs, and the Zips own Charlie Frye. We're impressed with the abilities you've shown in HS and JC. We think you have the potential to become a great MAC QB and future NFL player. We'll give you every opportunity to prove yourself. You can look at the stats from last season and see that the Zips need improved performance in every area, including QB. There's a great opportunity for whichever QB steps up and earns the Zips starting job next season, and we think you have the ability to do that. Are we close to being on the same frequency here, Skip, or do you see it differently? You forgot the weather report!
  10. AHA, the old 22 bball conference games solution. A10 has 14 teams, no divisions and plays 16 conference games.
  11. Part of me hopes for the simple solution= push BG to the West, and forget abou the breaking up into 2 divisions in basketball..simple 12 team league for b-ball and most other sports.
  12. Shocker. Coming off an 11-loss season, I have to believe that any good thing shown by a player or unit is mostly caused by the failures of the unit opposite them. And within these quotes we find great reason for playing a team other than itself in the spring!
  13. A couple of things here. First, soccer is a bunch of guys running around a field in shorts trying to bounce a ball off of their heads. If you are lucky, one of the players will actually put the ball into this structure with a net around it called the "goal" and his team will be given one point and create an insurmountable lead. Football is a contact sport. Spring practice is development time. Some of the players are not ready to be thrown into a game yet and key players like QBs might get harmed in these games. The BCS teams would make a killing playing the non-bcs teams at their stadiums. No BCS team would risk losing to another BCS team in a game like this. It would become a joke to those with half a brain and a "great testament to the pagentry of amateur athletics" to those working at ESPN. I didn't realize it was not possible for guys to hurt their own players in a spring game. It probably has never happened. But seriously..OK I get the QB thing. And maybe injuries is the reason. But, you can't go 1/2-assed in a spring game against your own..you are more likely to get injured doing that. So if it is all about the QB thing (which I highly doubt), I really think limiting it to "fear of injury" is pretty...well...limited in theory. As for the BCS and non-BCS thing..that does have a lot of merit. Seems like you could find a way around it if there truly was a desire. I'd still rather see my team against someone other than itself. Better in the FALL (1 pre-season game?), but would be fun in the Spring.
  14. Thinking about this recently... Why can NCAA Div I soccer teams play other opponents in the Spring, and Football can't (or doesn't)? Is this by rule? Having just 1 exhibition game would be lucrative for many BCS schools, ESPN, etc. OK, maybe this would not be a huge money maker for schools like Akron. But, take for example this year where we have depth issues with 7-8 lineman or whatever...and we are trying to get a good look at 2-3 QBs. Why not end the spring against another opponent instead of yourself? Just wondering if anyone has any information about why this type of thing does not happen?
  15. I think we are @ 5 on the roster right now. For a pro-style offense, I think that is a great number. You figure, if you are lucky, you have 2-3 TEs that can bascially "do everything", 1 that is mostly a blocker and 1 that is mostly a receiver. Biggest issue with TEs from most teams that play a pro-set (either exclusively or at times) is having a QB that can find the TE. Michigan before RichRod and Boston College at times over the years are 2 teams that have done a good job. Wisconsin and USC are others.
  16. In our last 3 games, things seemed to be coming together somewhat. Ball State and Buffalo were bad teams..both COULD have been wins, both COULD have been losses. But they were at least entertaining games. And dang, we were close against Miami. I am hoping that there is something to build on from those 3 performances, 2nd year in the system, weeding out the guys that don't want to play for Ianallo (not saying they are good or bad guys, good or bad players...just that they were not onboard), etc.
  17. Speaking of Syracuse, read yesterday on their site that all practices are open to the public. Nice. Also, Prince Tyson-Gulley was one of the stars of their scrimmage yesterday with a 70 yard run.
  18. 70 are players on the roster. However, I count at least 10 walk-ons. Out of the 23 recruits coming in, four (Washington, Moore, Staten, Rizzo) are already here. So we have 19 coming in in the fall to add to at best 60 scholarship players. So we are looking at 79 in a best-case scenario, assuming nobody quits during spring and fall camps (not a safe assumption, given our rate of players jumping ship). I think by the time we play OSU we'll have around 74 scholarship players. Not horrible. As someone mentioned (perhaps you), Syracuse was down quite a few going into this year..and they had a pretty good year.
  19. Just curious if you know this to be a fact or just think it might be. My amateur evaluation would be that putting in continuous rows of seats at a steeper angle from floor to ceiling shouldn't really require major structural changes to the building. You'd essentially be building on top of the structure that's already in place. But if there's an engineering reason why that wouldn't work, then I'd agree that major structural changes to the building don't make good economic sense when compared with the cost of a new facility optimized for the future. Hey Dave! I'm solely going on opinion, I'm not an architect. As for the needed improvements being "major," well, one example would be the lobby/ticket buying area. It's an absolute mess, and was obviously designed without much consideration of how crowds would affect the function of it. Dead of winter. Lines of ticket buyers stretching across, blocking the main entrance into the building??? Someone threw out a number....$10 million. I have no idea. But going on that figure, that's a considerable amount of money that the U could put toward a shared facility with the City. Done the right way, this new arena could lease out spaces for Winking Lizard and other private entities who can help offset costs. Shoot, attach a hotel or dorms or condominiums into the structure. The JAR is a very nice place for intramurals. But throwing a bunch of money into the place right now just seems a bad investment to me. Along with my "Carrier Dome" idea, I (and MANY others) have thrown out that type of idea= arena/hotel/restaurant/couple shops...obviously, that makes it a MAJOR undertaking. Rupp Arena has that type of set-up...sort of. Arena is attached to medium-sized mall. Have not been there in 10+ years, but it was nice back then (though Rupp Arena has, at least at that time, bench no-back seating up top= painful on the back for 4 NCAA tourney games!!!).
  20. Hey, I wanted a version of the Carrier Dome. But nobody would listen!!! Oh, and I didn't have $40 million+ laying around to help make it happen!
  21. Good to see Oren Wilson back @ DT. 3 RBs..definitely need some depth there!! Down to 5 TEs from 9 last year...seems like a more reasonable #. My hope is that, while the WRs may be short, we can find 3 that are good and can pair that with a couple of good tall TEs. I have high hopes for Will Fleming and Ritossa at the TE (to go along with Richard Hall). Fleming based on him just LOOKING like a football player in 09 and Ritossa just based on what I have read. Perhaps with both at 6'4, 220..maybe they can be our "Dallas Clark" type TE. 70 players listed on that roster. Not sure how many are scholarship vs. walk-ons..but with those guys and around 20 or so guys coming in (not including a couple that are here)...I don't see where we fall woefully short of scholarship players. It would still seem we are in the 75+ range of scholarship recruited players..which is not unheard of for year 2 of a program under a new coach with major changes.
  22. Northern Kentucky was a national title contender a few years ago. Lost recently to Bellarmine...most likely one of those 2 schools. http://nkunorse.com/index.aspx?tab=basketb...amp;path=mbball
  23. Let's hope that we get a new roster by, say, Friday. Or maybe ZTZ already has one compiled in an excel format (that is not a dig..I appreciate the updates!!!).
  24. After a 1-11 season, perhaps 15 questions would have been a MINIMUM.
  25. So, let me get this straight= you talked to a guy...who talked to JD...and then JD has heard from other guys that guys don't like Ianallo. That's a lot of guys!Just messing a bit, but c'mon. That's a lot of he said, he said, he said stuff. In reference to other posters comments: yeah, maybe he was ticked off when, in the middle of everyone trying to celebrate a great basketball championship, someone is shouting at him. Perhaps he thought everyone should just be enjoying the moment. Look, we have seen the results so far on the field..and they are ugly. And yeah, if JD is talking to some current players that he recruited and who still liked JD a lot..maybe they don't like Ianallo's style. Maybe JD was too relaxed, and Ianallo is too uptight. Who knows? Maybe Ianallo will bring it down a notch. This was the guy's first year on the job...and this is what you get when you get a guy that has never been in this position before. I have liked what I have seen of TomW being out there with the soccer team, being on the floor with the basketball team, and, seeming quite personable when I met him and when I have seen him around. Plus, I like what he has done with YouTube (in the past) and "Ask the AD". I'm trusting that this guy knows what he is doing...but, like most here, I am greatly concerned. I am just not giving up on Ianallo...yet. Zips need a runningback, maybe Wistrcill can suit up. I rarely use LOL, and when I do...I mean it. LOL!!! I hope we will see some of the young kids show something this year...yeah, I know..the few that are left!!!
