I really don't think so skip.USF got and invite. FSU, Florida and Miami are already there, and people will say that Tamp is on another side of the state, but then you have to deal with Alabama, and all the Louisiana Schools.Trust me the Big East isn't going to be scared to go into North East Ohio if the want to expand
-
Well considering the were a part of the Big East (1991 until 2004) and were booted I doubt that the Big East will be attracted any time soon.
-
If the attendance was that big of an issue, USF and Cinci would not have been selected (roughly 20,000 a piece and they had much higher caliber opponents then Liberty, Army, and Howard coming to their stadiums). The Big East is simple. Cinci, Louisville, and USF were benefactors of attrition. Miami, VTech, and Boston College left. The conference feared losing BCS status and revenue and being completely dismantled by the NCAA. So invites were given to the 3 schools. They did not care about attendance, they cared about market. Louisville they saw as an up and comer with a historic basketball program. Cinci and USF were great potential media markets. And that is the bottom line on conference growth. How big is your media market? Akron, is part of the Cleveland media Market (currently dominated by Big10 football, but thanks to the Big10 network, that is quickly becoming a moot point). As such, Akron has a potential market of over 3 million viewers. Most of which have familiarity with Big East teams, Pittsburgh, Cinci, Louisville. Knowing that Northeast Ohio is a recruiting hotbed it is only a matter of making the competition better, the exposure for the players better. However, right now the Big East has eight teams. There is no reason to go to 9 or 10. The next step would be a large one for the conference from a football perspective. They would need 4 additional teams to be able to have a conference championship game (which is another thing the Big 10 is looking for) So the question becomes what markets do you want your conference affiliated with? Since the Big East is stable for the time being, and the NCAA has not mandated full out conference Championships (Which I hear is the the BCS's next step) the Big East will not be looking for anyone soon. But rest assured that average attendance as of this date is not the determining factor. It's the potential for market share and expansion. That is one thing Akron has, and no school merger will help that fact. The average enrollment of a Big East football school is 27869. If I factor in Basketball only, it decreases drastically. So in conclusion, the University of Akron is as poised as any other school for admittance to the Big East. However, the Big East is not poised for expansion.

if zippy loses this week, should we get a new mascot?
g-mann17 replied to zippyrifle32's topic in Akron Zips Football
Awesome Yes not to mention that the CC has no originallity or creativeness. It's just the same stitch double stitch crap over and over again. I'm tired of it. -
Obviously you have never visited any other school. OU all the bars are just up the hill from Johnson (on campus housing). In Madison, it's the same situation. This is how college housing is supposed to be. At least now they don't have to drive home. Besides the fact that this is going to be "off campus" housing. Meaning that it is not governed by the University of Akron at all. Just the owner.

Supposedly, the City is going to free up parking for the area somehow. That should be interesting to see how that happens.

An interesting discussion on the 3-3-5
g-mann17 replied to ZachTheZip's topic in Akron Zips Football
Yes I can see how attendance is very relevant to what you are talking about with the 3-3-5 defense. If you want to educate yourself on the 3-3-5 then I suggest you read this:Coaching Footballs's 3-3-5 DefenseBut also for you I would suggest:Just for you. -
It sounds like a nice idea (sorry brubakers) I am curious to see concept drawings on the project though. I am hoping it sticks with the current architectural trends in the city: Red Brick, Glass, and stone accents. I figure 150 units on top of retail, it should be about 4 stories or similar in size to the Exchange St Student Housing that was just recently built. Also I have a feeling that the project is a huge lead into this:Here's Hoping :-)

LOL "Pot calling the kettle black"You are absolutely the biggest waste on here. Oh wait that might have hurt your buckeye loving feelings.Where are my excuses? That Temple proved they could ball before they even played us? That all of you Big 10 loving wannabes know nothing of what MAC football is? That I think you should call out the O-Coordinator Moorehead for lack of offensive production? If a change doesn't occur then you can say JD isn't doing his job, but to me the fact that he even has us in contention (which we still are in case you didn't notice) is quite impressive considering the inexperience of offense. Oh wait you will call tha than excuse too, because a good coach can make anything happen when he wants it too, he is not at the mercy of teams that have played longer and understand how to win. Yeah I'm excuse ridden.Hell sorry I hurt your feelings Bucky.
-
That's about the response I would expect from you.Making excuses.

Ah see, look at all of you Butt Monkeys. You jump on me because I call you out for being negative after a loss to Temple. Temple who almost beat UConn who shelled us, Temple who almost beat BGSU.The conference is full of teams that can on any given saturday (or wednesday, or thursday) beat any other team. But we lose one MAC game and it's "off with his head" and every other negative comment one can come up with.I didn't say don't criticize, I never said be a bunch of "are team is the greatest no matter what you say" tards. No I said don't be negative about the season or a young team in a conference where anything can happen. If you read what I wrote I was critical of Moorehead. His play calling is the least inspired offense I have seen since the advent of the forward pass. Which I am beginning to think he happens to be unaware of the fact that it exists. But I am not throwing in the chips. I am not saying this team is horrible. This team is young. How much that plays into the play calling is not something anyone of us can determine.I said stop calling for JD's head. "What has he done for us lately?" He has us 3-4 2-1 in the MAC better then anyone could have expected. He has managed to qualify us for two Bowl games. Quit saying "if CJ7 was playing we'd be winning" would we? He certainly didn't do much to stake his claim. A leader does what is needed and sets an example. Showing up late and throwing a hissy fit because you were disciplined is not being a leader. We won't 3 years of CJ11, he will end up being a back up next year.Did I say stop giving your opinions? No, I said quit acting like losing to Temple is the end of the world. Stop the negativity. That's all I said. The forum was for the discussion of what direction should take, who is better at what position, who new recruits are. Not to be a bunch of whiney losers like those Can't State fans.

Actually some of us donate quite a bit to our Alma Mater. However, when writing that check it seems difficult at times writing the check knowing that there are people on a web site calling you out and saying you are no fan.Refusing to admit that most of what you have said for the past 3 years is true. Instead they just want to wear blinders and ignore everything.Ah, nice excuse. Except that anyone who donates doesn't care what the opinion of someone they don't know happens to be.

All the negative butt monkeys that are posting after losses?Doesn't matter who the loss is too they fly on out and complain about the coaches, or Jacquemain or the play calling, or the refs. The problems we have, we have had all season. Brookhart is the greatest guy in the world when we steal a game from WMU. We play the same way against Temple and he's an idiot? No I don't think so. You are all malcontents that think the real world is one where we are supposed to win every game we go into. Is the offense bad? Yes. Blame Moorehead, blame Jacquemain. It couldn't be the fact that that 70% of the offense are sophomores. Is the defense bad? No it's struggling because the offense is so bad. Right now we are trying to rope a dope a team. We can't attack because we are too afraid of giving up a big play. The fact that you think the D is bad shows how little any of you actually understand this game. If you create more turnovers you are supposed to win. We create more turnovers. The offense just doesn't do anything.Stop all the negativity. Support the team. Support the staff. This is the MAC. Where even Can't State can contend (at least for a week or two)

1. I was not aware of this. I would have assumed that following the switch to 1-A the program would have seen some increase in a recruiting budget. Also the 2005 Championship I would have thought would have given cause to increase said budget.2. This I would find hard to believe. My friend was cheerleader for 3 years and even as a non scholarship athlete he was required to attend tutoring. Unless the athletics programs do not have travel tutors (again I am not sure of this) I do not see why the support program would be bad. We have one of the best education departments in the state and a high profile special education program. David Harvey flunking out is on David Harvey. The tools were available to him he did not take advantage of them.3. I saw the Patriot Bowl posters. That's on the Cleveland sports administration. So I see one actual issue of the three you mentioned. Though I will add that marketing at the time being leaves a lot to be desired. The biggest thing that the program needs is for University of Akron graduates to actually support their school. Donate to the Z-Fund. This offsets the University's scholarship costs and pumps more money into the Athletics Budget.

What is that supposed to mean?

It just dawned on me, but why is this big news? The stadium website mentioned that ground breaking for the stadium would be in January over a week and a half ago. It's just now news worthy? Or is this something was brought to the media's by someone other then the University, say a property owner.
-
Just to ease all the weary minds out there on deadlines and construction time.Cleveland Browns Stadium 73,000 seats (and natural grass, sod takes a long time to grab hold)Broke ground May 15, 1997 Opened September 12, 1999 (28 months)Ford Field 65,000 seats (domed)Broke ground November 16, 1999 Opened August 24, 2002 (32 months)Infocision Stadium 30,000 Seats (astroplay surface)Break ground January 2008Opening Sept 12, 2009 (21 months)So as you can see, the University is building a stadium of half the size in comparable time. There is plenty of room for delays.

Seriously? If we had won on Saturday would you still be ranting this senseless crap? Grow up dude. This is a job for everyone involved in the administration and coaching. They didn't marry Akron, they just took a job. While they are here they will work to make Akron the best it can be. If they have great success and get an offer that takes them to even greater opportunities, then they should go. If that's the case, then they don't owe us anything because they would have already done so much for us. Give Brookhart a break. He won us a championship JUST two years ago. I don't recall any other coaches bringing that trophy to us since we went 1-A. If you want these guys to be so dedicated to Akron, how about you be dedicated to them too instead of stabbing them in the back when the team stumbles a little.

NEOUCOMP and downtown medical corridor
g-mann17 replied to ZippyRulz's topic in General UA & Campus Discussion
I think this is my favorite quote:"Not to be outdone in the rhetoric, Can't State President Lester Lefton calls his Can't State the "Nordstrom's of Higher Education" in Northeastern Ohio. If the College of Medicine and Pharmacy must be merged, it should go to Can't State, he says."Yes I have often felt that Can't State is a glorified, high priced, foreign product that everyone calls 'fashionable'. -
Considering that most everything new on campus has broke ground in January, I think they have the technique down.
-
Ah perfect, another Butt Monkey.I would prefer to not have to read this "we lost so now I hate everything, and the coaches and athletic department are only out for a payday" garbage. 1: I hope they do want to use Akron as a "resume" boost. That means they have to be successful.2: I would love to have the history of churning out coaches and AD's that Miami (OH) used to. It builds the program, hell that's why Marshall only spent 4 years in the MAC.Educate yourself before you make witless banter.
-
Yes I believe that taint of sports writer Thomas blogged about it.Said that OSU shouldn't even be gracing teams like Akron, BGSU, Can't State with their all-powerful precense. And that it was a "disgrace to make OSU fans pay full price" for a game like that.

I still say the ideal situation is that CSU is dismantled as a University. Tri-C takes over the campus. The CSU students wanting a 4 year degree would then take base classes at Tri-C and then move on to the University of Akron or Can't State depending on the major. The Universityof Akron and Can't State would serve as larger Universities for the state. The population density of NEO does reflect the need of two University campuses but the schools themselves differ greatly in the areas of study. As a retaining point any student would be able to freely choose between the two campuses for undergraduate studies and credit transfer would be no problem. Now here is where my idea get's weird: NEOUCOM in general is moved to Akron. (Summa wants a medical school and Cleveland already has UH in conjunction with CWRU). The buildings that exist on the NEOUCOM Campus become the Northeast Ohio Technilogical Advancement Campus (NEOTAC). The facility would be a joint use facility for the University of Akron, Can't State, and Youngstown State (if they do any research I don't really know). It would work as an Economic Accelerator impacting industry in both Cleveland and Akron.

I think we will see Williams break-out game. 200+ yds rushing 2 TD. Plus Jabari's Typical TD and Igor tacking on an extra 3. Temple will give us some fits since DiMichele is like Edelman. Zips - 24 Hooters - 17
