  1. Do I think it will be easy for the Zips to beat the Buckeyes? No. Possible? Most definitely.Reason the Zips Will:The Buckeyes (who some will refer to in a disrespectful manner, I choose not, because you gain respect by giving respect) return 4 defensive starters. So First, the defense is raw, very raw. Yes there is Laurinatis (probably spelled that wrong) but as was seen in the Florida game he can't be the only person on defense doing something. Second, the offense will consist of Chris Wells, and some throw and hope from one of three possible QB's there is no guarantee that after the YSU game Boeckman will be starting. Third, Wells is not a better running back then Tony Hunt. The defense (which is mostly the same as last year) handled Tony Hunt for the most part. Wells also has a horrible case of fumble-itis. Face it it's true. That's why Maurice Wells is getting so many reps. Also OSU could not score at will last year, they relied on field position, and only conservatively beat teams that should have been blown out. Akron can play small ball. That is how a very speedy Florida beat OSU last year. Dink and Dunk, that fits into the skill set of the Zips offense right now. Mixed with a change up back field, it makes things harder to plan for. OSU also has to plan for a road trip to Washington, so may be looking past Akron.Reason the Zips Won't:We lost a lot of talent in our receiving core. We have yet to pick a starting quarterback, which means we have a lot of inexperience at a key position. One game is not usually enough time for an offensive line to gel. The defense while the teams strength has an unproven d-line. So there you go. I only went into more detail on why we will beat OSU because we already know everything that is going against us. My real prediction will come after the Army game. If we can't handle them, we definitely can't handle OSU.
  2. In light of the new stadium, I was curious to see what everyone's most memorable Rubber Bowl experience is.As a fan, I would I have to say mine is the "The Night The Lights Went Out", The incredible come from behind win over Marshal that was actually televised. That got a lot of people talking about our program. On a more personal level, it would be walking out the gates knowing I played my last game of interscholastic football after losing handedly to Firestone my senior year.
  3. Yes it was mentioned how could he get this far. He was a Pittsburgh offensive coordinator for four seasons, he has had the Zips for 3 seasons starting his 4th. If threatening scholarships was part of his repertoire you would have already heard about it.
  4. I would say that is 100% bogus. If it were physically possible, it would be 110% bogus. Thanks for checking in, Doug Martin. Not only that Cap but does anyone honestly think that JD would have gotten this far pulling something like that. The most likely scenario is that JD sat Hakes and his father down and gave him a real estimate of his current position on the depth chart. "You are third, and perhaps 4th with the way Rodgers has been playing lately. You have the option of moving to a new position, or I can release you from your scholarship to allow a transfer, and I will even help you look for another program." That is more then likely how that all went down. Any idiot knows you can't pull a scholarship because of on field performance anyway.
  5. I'd love to see it, even if you split the division between Massillon, Fawcett and Infocision. Unfortunately if the powers at be have there say the FB championship will be played in a cavernous OSU Stadium.
  6. To me, the biggest problem with the modern day fan is that they determine if a player is a star or a has been before they even take their first step into a pro-scenario.To anyone that says Frye does not have skills associated with other top QB's in the league I would say this. He was initially predicted to a 5th round pick, everyone moved his stock up after private workouts. Tom Brady was initially slated as a 3rd to 4th round pick. His stock dropped him to the second day (6th round to be precise). You do the math on that one.The problem with Northeast Ohio is that we are all so hungry to say we have the best sports team that we have all lost our patience. Give Frye some time.
  7. So let them be pissed, they have that Ravenna Rag for coverage if they want an article about re-sealing the Dix parking lot, or adding a new memorial to some hippies. (sorry I have a special distaste for Can't because of something that happened to distant relatives during that time.) The University of Akron founded 1870, Can't State University founded 1910. Someone needs to put that little piss ant school in it's place and let it know it's got a lot of dues to pay.
  8. How about dumbest comment."on saturdays all eyes are on the team from Columbus"Maybe that's because you don't let Northeast Ohio look anywhere else. I'm sorry but until the day it actually changes I will always criticize the Beacon for putting OSU before the home town team. You think Pitt does that? No. Do you think Huntington did that? Heck no. And the Marhall vs West Virginia is a very comparable to The University of Akron vs OSU.Is that saying you take OSU off the front page after beating Michigan? No, but it does mean preseason should focus on the Zips. It does mean a Zips win should get more coverage then an OSU loss. It does mean the Patriot Bowl should get more then the FirstMerit add that has been running in the paper.
  9. Ok, the block in between Main, Exchange, Buchtel, and High is mostly owned by the Beacon. I believe both those blocks on that side of Buchtel are if I'm not mistaken. Now as far across Main from Canal Park. It just dawned on me that that teenie bopper trap of a club Mangos occupies one building. The other Building is the Mayflower (which the Don (I like that for some reason) has been trying to tear down for quite some time. Two birds with one stone perhaps, and a big enough foot print for something fairly decent. Still part of Campus (next to Polsky) still downtown.
  10. Now here's a question. What do they mean by "downtown"? The Campus is technically downtown. Or do they mean on Broadway, High, or Main? Here is why I ask this. Proposed site of the new Akron Hotel, the parking lot across E. Mill St behind the refurbished law offices. Now, land adjacent to that to the north is part of the BioMedical Corridor and is currenty under construction. Land to the Northwest is a parking lot owned by the Art Museum. Broadway and High are pretty much filled up all the way to GOJO Plaza. We all know how there is no room on Main St.Essentially from what I can see that leaves us with 3 options. Central Hower (on campus doesn't fit the downtown concept I think). A Small lot on Cedar and Bowery. Or the currently vacant and very visible lot on Perkins and N. Union (which is even further from the heart of downtown then Central Hower). Granted this is a ways down the road. And probably only hold water if Plusquellic remains in office.
  11. Yay. Now the Taint can cry about not getting time because he wants to show his awesome taint ability.
  12. It was built to be expandable (intially to 50,000). As far as soccer friendly, haven't really heard anything on that. They do intend it to have other uses (band camp, band competitions, high school games). I was under the impression that the soccer field was on the verge of a major over-hall as well. Concession and restroom plaza, better press boxes, camera bays, and the stands improved to support 3-5000 fans. If you search there is a link in the soccer section that takes you the master plan.
  13. I would add to that....and Alumni. Because let's face it Alumni donations help The University of Akron quite a bit.
  14. Kudos to Mr. Taylor! It is great to see a University of Akron alumnus do well and contribute back to his community. His company earned that new facility. So to Mr. Taylor and Infocision I give you a big
  15. From what I have seen from the Local News Websites, only Channel 5 has any interest in the story. I'm sure Eric Mansfield (WKYC Channel 3) will eventually have something. I could care less about WOIO 19 they have been the worst news since the CBS/FOX switch. FOX 8 should probably have something but they will find some way to look dumb (skin flute anyone? LOL)Mayor Don will probably find a way to drag his sorry but to the ground breaking for the photo op. I am usually a big Plusquellic supporter but his complete apathy for the University the last couple months is quite appalling.

  17. Actually, in a 4-3 you typically are going to use two 300lb plus individuals to fight in the guard/center, guard/tackle gaps (A and B gap). In a 3 man line you have one 300lb individual over center shifting to either A gap (weak or strong side). So then your Mike has opposite. Your D-ends are true D-ends lining up over tackle, your two outside linebackers have B gap or C gap coverage based on the line movement. You need one big man in a 3 man line, two in 4 man line. You want a quicker person over tackle for the fact that he is always going to be the tackles blocking assignment (creates a mismatch). this gives you strong blitzing ability to the B or C gap. Of course that is only the theory for run defense, and only factors in the front 6. Once you add the two Strong Safeties you are able to attack any gap at any time. You can switch between 6 and 8 men in the box on a whim.
  18. So you all think that a 4-3 will change how good our run defense is? Especially considering JD himself pointed out that he has difficulty finding one dominating D-Lineman let alone 2?The most Likely defensive change would be to a 3-4 to incorporate the Linebacker depth, but the 3-3-5 is still the best option because you have a larger blitz package that you can run out of it and the defensive shifts confuse blocking schemes. They do need to address how to cover the option out of the 3-3-5 so we don't see Edelman (on any QB for that matter) looking like an All-American against us again this year. Considering they gave up an average of 322.5 ypg last year any improvement anywhere is going to be huge (meaning dominating because that is only 50 yards a game more then WMU). And that average can drop just from us being able to run the ball better on offense and keep our D off the field so they can rest up.
  19. Drive on Route 8 south just past campus. Be sure to do it at night for the full effect. It's on the right. FYI. The one on Interstate 76 is just before the Rt 91 underpass heading eastbound. The Interstate 77 billboard is between Copley Rd and White Pond Dr. There is also one on 224 heading east before the Waterloo Rd/Manchester Rd exit.
  20. Hey Cap,Do you think fans should make a push at the sports editor of the ABJ to actually cover the U of A every weak, and not just when Ohio State has a bye week?I'm personally a little sick of knowing what kind of diamond studs the top receiver at OSU was able to buy after working his landscaping job over the summer.
  21. Eminent Domain takes into account the property value and any structures on said property. It's not just a "here is 20 grand for your $100,000 worth of property" it's "Here is a $110,000 for your $100,000 worth of property." A lot of people are going to try and hammer me for saying you are going to get more then what it's worth. But truthfully you do: Stow/Munroe Falls wanted to build a road through a friend of my family's property, they offered him 60 for land that was worth 40, they ended up not using his land after they did a traffic survey for the area and said an additional road was not necessary.I also saw a lot of "what the fore-fathers intended" comments. If you look through our history plenty of private property was "bought" through bloodshed to build forts roads, towns, private investments. Ask a Native American about westward expansion and what they received for their land. That was all done from "interpretation of what the fore-fathers intended." And yes, it is very much the same thing. Except now you don't get SAR's blankets in exchange for your "hard earned" property you get money and media attention and everyone feeling sorry for you because someone wants to pay you for your rundown property that you say you are going to fix but you haven't during the 20 years you have owned it despite urban renewal grants that were available to you.Ok rant over
  22. I agree with Dr. Z also. We might think it doesn't affect ticket sales but it does put it in the back of peoples minds. In fact since I don't see that many billboards I try to be the biggest billboard I can be. As a fan and alumnus I feel it's important to talk up the school as much as possible. A lot of people at my work have begun to take notice of the team, so it is having some positive affect.
  23. Section 136 Row 4 seats 20-21 (no I'm not that fat, my wife will be with me) for the Patriot Bowl. For the rest of the games, what ever part of the Stadium isn't gnat infested and looks least likely to collapse ;-)
  24. Funny, but then again why not, at least as temporary housing until they can figure out if there will be room on Exchange after the stadium and Spicer Village are completed.
  25. Hey, since IU likes playing MAC schools so much (Akron and WMU) why don't we invite them to join the MAC so our basketball RPI can get some respect. LOL
